I get a bunch of high bill complaints every year.. people thinking their meter is wacky or they must have a leak. Usually it comes down to either 1- nothing, or 2- some change in usage. I can question them all day, but they never want to admit it was due to their kid coming home from college taking two long showers a day, laundry and cranking the heat while they leave the doors and windows open and the faucet running. Very, very rarely have I ever clocked a meter and found anything out of whack.
Are people so ignorant now that they can’t READ THEIR BILL and compare USAGE per month instead of dollars? Gas usage is in CCF’s right on the damn bill. Do some research folks, get curious, use your brains and the information the supplier gives you, plus knowing your own energy demands over the past months! NOT THAT HARD but maybe everyone is out to find someone to blame rather than self-inspect. Or just getting dumber and lazier.
@@dock_yard1149It's a whole new breed of customer today. I had a family the other day who physically blocked me from locking their gas meter. They had not made a payment since spring, but demanded I couldn't lock them. I left before the machetes came out, we returned with the sheriff later. That sort of thing never used to happen, but it's becoming more common today.
Also, every year price of goods and services go up while their money/income stay the same. Or, or they need to go work and make more money to cover the difference.
Steve, it's not natural gas prices, they've been going down pretty fast in Massachusetts according to the charts I looked at. A 300% increase is huge so that would indicate a problem of some sort. I think it's those burners. That soot build-up can really impact your heating bills as it makes your furnace very inefficient Good work.
You know when you do these kind of jobs that ain't going to make a difference to gas consumption but you tell the customer it's for peace of mind and its great for cashflow
Guy’s complaining about “300 percent” jump in billing since last year. Cleaning out burner tubes isn’t going to bring that back down all that much. And no boiler or furnace is gonna suddenly become that wasteful inside 12 months unless a bird or critter is blocking the chimney. But the dude’s an engineer and neither he nor Steve mentioned what’s the difference in CCFs of gas he consumed this month vs 12 months ago. Can’t compare dollars to dollars, gotta compare USAGES of the product. The damn gas bills have this extra info in them, you have to analyze it all to isolate causes better.
You have to keep an eye on the gas meter and keep a record of usage especially if it is a digital one. They have been known to have a mind of their own. Not the analogue ones they can't be controlled from external sources
Great work Steve. Just curious as to why you don't do combustion analysis on these units when you do these services. Wouldn't that be something that should be performed ?
Priceless! Jesse this wad just awesome! Great to see your love Jeannine! Putting up a metal shed is a sure test of a marriage. We’ve put up four in our 46 years. When can you get the ability for us to contribute individually to support your channels?

i'd drill a small hole in that metal exhaust pipe just above the damper motor and take a CO Reading there just to see how it's burning. flame rollout ensures chimney and heat echanger arent substantially blocked but it's nice to check CO on that natural drafts
They actually make little plugs specifically for plugging those holes. Every plumbing supply sells them. On an atmospheric boiler there's no reason to cover the hole though. The entire bottom of the draft hood is an open 12x10 or bigger rectangle. Nothing will leak through a 1/4 inch hole. Draft will keep it at negative pressure.
The Midwest is having a really warm start to the year. We really haven't had our snowfall so far. We be mid 30s, where we would normally be in 20s and 30s. Plus, by now, we would've had a few snowfalls by now. Next week, we're supposed to get some snow. The storm is hitting the Eastcoast, but skipping the Midwest.
If you check your gas bill every month, it should tell you the amount of gas you use. I make a note of the CCF usage every month; then you can tell how much gas you are using. Then you can verify your gas bill to see if you have a problem with your gas unit. *** Just a Thought.****

People need to be looking at the usage and not the $ when it comes to utility bills. Like you said, everything has gone up in cost but you might not be using more.
Half of my gas bill is the fuel adjustment fee. 25 dollars in gas used and 25 dollar additional fuel adjustment fee plus taxes and whatever other fees.
And guy would know that if he read his bills and compared to the same month’s bill last year. He’s an engineer but he sounds lazy and doesn’t look at all the usage & misc fee info on his bills. Dum dum.
Steve great video. Did you look closely at the last couple of minutes or so where you can see some arcing near the electrical connector for the white wire near where the flame sensor goes into the sheet metal above the burners? Just something to look at since it appears to arc several times through those last few minutes when the camera is pointed and the heater is running. May be a loose electrical connector.
Thats not an arc... that the peep hole for the burners... only looks like an arc because of the camera angle. The flickering is the flames from the burners...
Steve I’m surprised you didn’t take a mirror and inspect the sections and the flue probably need a brush and vac job, he probably wanted you gone asap.
I have found doing handyman work around Massachusetts, many people don't have near enough Attic insulation they have an R rating of 20 in insulation when here in new England you need a rating of R 42 rating minimum and the other factors 20+ year old leaky windows and doors, of course the burners going to keep calling for heat in those conditions
A current vid from Steven! Wow! What a treat. With Miss Molly too! Yea, I've written many a comment on your sites here about my "SMITH" boiler, a meare 45 years old. Gone I'll tell ya. Used one o those chainfall rigs to winch the thing out a the basement. Off to the metal scrapyard it went. Put in one of those Bedurus four section boilers with a Rieallo burner. Had to vent it. Drilled a three inch hole right through the foundation plate and a little room with a vent down low for the new chimney. All good now. Amazing what a little fresh air does for those blower burners. Very efficient, house is nice and warm as I write this. Now on my second season with it. I could not have even begun this project without your good guidance. Thank you so much for sharing all that you do! I'll tell ya! Thank you again. ~✨👍✨~. Nahampsha here.
Nice video Steve. Probably wasn't burning clean either; combustion efficiency was likely not so great. Gas has gone up substantially. Some homeowners think you have a magic wand to just make all their problems go away hah
Yep your right, just paid my gas bill and the price just went up again in my area paying almost double the price that I was paying before January 20 2021
@@Ander5806 - Same here. A lot of these gas companies can charge whatever they want. Not regulated. So it has nothing to do with what natural gas is going for.
My gas and electric bill really dropped when I installed my new furnace. I believe the old supply plenum was leaking because it looked like the duct board was patched together by an amateur. My neighbor had to replace his plenum because the installer didn’t staple the flaps on his old plenum. It was just taped and it came apart.
Friends had their system audited. The amount of air loss was insane. Patching up the plenum and some duct repairs knocked close to 40% off the bills for heating/AC.
@@jblyon2 I did one of the energy audits, and ended up having my ducts sealed a month ago. Supposedly, they got an 85% reduction in leakage. Not sure yet how that will translate to savings, as it's been only a month but also through the holidays and corresponding increases from that. I have noticed that the house seems more evenly heated, and the heat doesn't seem to be running for as long. Time will tell on that one....but certainly older homes were built without consideration to efficiency and savings, for sure.
Steve, i just wanted to thank you being a great person when i called in with an emergency. Russ from lakeville
I guess my heat bill is higher because I'm in my 70s and don't like being cold. Rather spend it for that than for crap I don't need. :)
