    FF4 is my favorite in the series and I've played it every year since it's release. I had no idea about these and now can't wait to jump back in!

      Its one of my favorites too.. This is the game that really got me to totally love the series even though I actually play Final Fantasy on the NES before playing this game.

    Cool idea for a video David. I love all three of the 16 bit Final Fantasy games and have played through each of them several times. Especially 4 and 6 since those were available in my youth, as we had to wait a few years for a translated version of 5 in America. These hacks look like they breathe some new life into such a beloved and classic title.

    Wow, that was very interesting, and I look forward to seeing more videos like this one! The After Years was mostly a glorified rom hack anyway, so it's a great way to revisit some classics!

    I feel invigorated after a discussion about my favorite Final Fantasy title. I could gush and argue every aspect of the game that makes it the top of the list; but I find words fail to express its impact.
    Thanks for the great review of a great game! After thirty years I love to see it still resonates with gamers.

    First of all Final Fantasy 4 has music that legitimately to me is "OMG" levels of great. The composition of the music in this game always sounded ahead of its time to me and so amazingly melodic and pleasurable to hear. Secondly, the Darkness Within is the hack cherry on the sundae here. What an interesting retelling of the game. That definitely perked my interest since I know 4 well otherwise! Thank you David!

    Trying out Final Fantasy II Unprecedented Crisis and I love it so far. Especially how levelling in the early game is actually useful since you don't lose most of your initial party members and Cecil's level isn't suddenly reset to 1 when you hardly had much time with him as a dark knight. It's also nice seeing abilities such as Dark Wave being restored and child Rydia is heavily buffed so she isn't one-shotted by the first enemies you meet with her in the party.

    I thought it maybe game balancing at best but seems like there are a world of fan stories to discover. Sadly too little time to dedicate to anything these days

    I have only played pokemon mod/hacks. This video has inspired me to revisit some old FF games. It will be nice to play FF4 for the 5th or 6th time and have it be different this time around. Would be very interested in seeing similar videos on this topic. I have read that FF6 hand FFT have outstanding and complete hack versions that address balancing and up the difficulty.

    Universe : oh , and check out these awesome hacks of final fantasy IV

    Thanks for this ! Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite FF game. I only heard of the FF4 Enterprise hack, so story twists like this is very intriguing. I'll definitely give them a try...assuming my laptop can handle them.

    • @acidwizard6528
      @acidwizard6528 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm quite sure your laptop can handle it. I've been able to play SNES emulators on every laptop I've ever owned and my old PC from the late 1990s could breeze right through games from the 16 bit catalogue. Any modern computer or smartphone shouldn't have a problem. Enjoy some retro gaming.

    A lot of these hacks are good, but I think currently the more enjoyable one is probably Final Fantasy IV T-Edition (Still in Alpha by the guy who made FFVI T-Edition), which does a lot. Replaces all the graphical assets with the remastered versions from GBA version, replacing all the sprites with Record Keeper battle sprites, giving the characters their PSP portraits. It also adds the GBA/PSP versions party swapping and some of the end game from it such as the new Mount Ordeals dungeon. Only problem is, not many people will play it unless they know Japanese. :x

  • @kaadiart
    @kaadiart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I played FF4 Ultima. The changes sprinkled throughout the game are nice, but in my opinion, the game really goes downhill at the end game.
    There are some super bosses that you simply cannot beat without exploiting game mechanics, such lowering Cecil's agility because enemies agility is based off of Cecil's agility. And even then, there are some bosses that have major attacks that do random damage. There is at least one boss that you just have to be a high enough level to survive the first attack.
    Many super bosses represent the best examples of the 'bad parts' of difficulty. It's not a challenge, it's a crap shoot, a dice roll, or a grinding requirement.

      @@davidvinc Yeah, I gave up on the end game, and I rarely do that on a game. I love a good challenge. I'm definitely going to try the other two mods though. :)

    I played Ultima until the moon about a year ago and got sidetracked, but it is a killer hack. I've beaten vanilla over 50 times, so I can pick up from ANYWHERE (one time it took me an hour to find the damn hovercraft though lol) IIRC I was in the process of grinding for a side quest boss (southeastern part of the underground, I think...)
    I DIGRESS. I want to try "The Darkness Within." I think I already have it downloaded and patched... it's just quite an undertaking to jump into a fan-made* creation that'll OSMOSE a good 60 hours from my life lol
    *Fan-made can sometimes be even better than the original... they can also suck. I've played more SMB1 hacks than any other game, simply because I can find out if it's cool in 5 minutes; I could get 4 hours into a JRPG hack before I decide it isn't worth it.
    Ugh, I talk a lot... Thanks for these reviews! You've helped me figure out what I want to play.

    • @davidvinc
      @davidvinc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's the plan! Although it seems that for every great FF1 hack, there's an equally crappy one. I would only cover the ones that are actually good, I don't want to give any attention to garbage hacks.

    • @esthiem4388
      @esthiem4388 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @esthiem4388
      @esthiem4388 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only FF1 hacks that I've played are the one I mentioned yesterday, The Dawn Warriors, and GFF.
      Frank Fnantasy very average hack, the only differences are the story (kinda), the overworld, and the amount of classes at the beginning (about 12 instead of 6).
      Dawn Warriors slightly changes the story, the graphics are all new and based on FF5, and there are new classes replacing the old ones and new abilites.
      GFF makes FF1 play like the psp version and makes every attacking spell hit every enemy, making black mages useful aside from boss battles, there are still spell charges instead of MP and the targeting issue still exists though.

    • @esthiem4388
      @esthiem4388 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've also only played 2 FF6 romhacks, Eternal Crystals which just fixes a few bugs, adds a better translation, changes a few sprites and character classes, and focuses the story on crystals and espers at the same time, the second was Return of tge Dark Sorcerer, from what I can tell it's kind of a spoof hack, changes the story, some sprites, and adds all new characters, like Tifa from FF7
