    Wow, three Mini 14 videos in a row. Did I die and go to heaven? Thanks you for everything you have done Mr. GunBlue. You really are setting a new standard on telling the truth about these carbines. I've got a old 188 that had the flip up sights and replace them with adjustable M1 carbine sights. I really like them and they work great.

    My ranch rifle is really something special to me. When I was a boy, I helped my father replace our roof on our house and he inturn bought me my first rifle and it was that ranch rifle. I still have it and it's still beautiful but many of the things I didn't know all these years I am learning through this channel right here. I think I'm going to buy this site and revive my love for shooting this great rifle! Thank you

      I don’t have a Mini 14 but I do have the first rifle my dad got for me. It’s a Marlin 60 with Tech Sights. They work really well. You won’t be disappointed, especially if you’re used to the factory peep or bladed ramp sights.

      That's a fine 22lr and a friend of my youth had one. I believe it had a very nice birch stock. We lived in the foothills of Mt Wilson in California and we would hike to several spots that were great squirrel hunting locations. We both dispatched lots of squirrels with that very rifle and it was a hoot! I would not except any dollar figure or trade for my father's memorable gift to me. And I bet you are the same. It stays with me and will go to my 2nd daughter and so on...

      Make sure that you buy the correct one for your rifle. Check your serial number for what series it is and then choose the tech sight that you need. Also, their customer service is top notch....

    This was the ONLY video on TH-cam I could find that explained how to adjust the rear sight.
    Immediately tried out my new found secret and it was easy as hell. My Mini 14 was just bought this past weekend at the Orlando gun show. Tried it from my hog stand to a 30 yard target where the feeder is set up.
    Shot a bit low but 9 of the 12 rounds were within 2".. Adjusted my aim to cover the bullseye and had a 3 shot group within 1.25" in the red spot. Now that I have adjusted the rear sight, I expect even better results.
    I absolutely LOVE this gun. Traded in a real AR-10 for it that was way too heavy. This Mini 14 is a pleasure to shoot and carry. Pigs will die, I won't cry. Warm up that smoker.

    My mini 14 is the first firearm I ever purchased and I love it. Fun to shoot without the annoying “boing” of an AR, natural pointer, reliable, and not overly complex or heavy. I did have to put it to the side however because of the sights. I have had the sight adjustment screws walk out without me noticing thus I lost my zero and could no longer shoot till I got the replacement screws. I felt I could no longer reasonably rely on the rifle because of the sights and so it has sat in the back of the safe for the past 5 years or so now. I don’t want to put on a scope or red dot as it would add weight, complexity, and fragile components along with being anywhere from a few hundred bucks to more than the price of the rifle for the optic and the mounting solution. Swapping in this sight will solve all of the issues I see with my mini.

    I feel the same way about my Ruger 16” scout rifle in 308. It’s such a handy bolt gun plus I can get 10 round mags for it. Because Ruger was smart and used a already proven magazine design (AI). Instead of trying to design a dumpster fire of a proprietary mag.

      I have a Gunsite 308 also. The rear sight on it looks very similar to the rear sight on the mini-14. Since both guns are made by Ruger, I wonder if the tech sight would work for the Gunsite Scout.

    The other day I heard one of the big GunTube channels say "I wouldn't wish a Mini 14 on anybody". I had one around 2004. It was a ranch rifle stainless and synthetic. People talk about how bad accuracy is. I shot a chipmunk off of a corn pile about 50 yards away with factory flip up peep sight. I was young and my eyes were better then, sure. Mini 14s have been used by feds and prison guards for decades though they aren't exactly combat rifles in my opinion. They are ranch rifles and I loved mine.

    I tried to get the top sight screw off but it chewed the top off of the screw. I even tried heating the screw up with a hair dryer so it was very warm to the touch and it did nothing. That screw is obviously made of soft steel & the LocTite must be excessive. It shouldn't have done that. Any suggestions? I'm pretty much SOL at this point. Brand new gun. Never fired it.

      And in addition I lost the allen wrench adjust tool. I want to try this ruger

    How would you boresite that sight setup?

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garand style rifles are not boresighted, due to their design. Bore sighting is done by positioning a rifle toward a black bullseye at 25 yards. With the bolt removed, the sighter aligns the rifle so the bull appears through the barrel. Then, the sights are adjusted to the target. You can't look down a Garand style barrel. It's not necessary. Get a large 24" square paper backing (white butchers paper from the deli is great, or wrapping paper) with a 1-1/2" dot colored in the middle and fire a single shot at 25 yards. Adjust sights so the bullet strikes the dot. At 25 yards, multiply all clicks by 4. Tech sight clicks are 7/8 MOA, so to move the point of impact five inches, that's 35/8ths of an inch at 100 yards, or 4-3/8". Multiplied time 4 = approximately 17 clicks. Then shoot 3 shot groups at 100 yards and adjust as necessary. Most peep sight experts prefer to use a 6" black bull, with a 6 o'clock hold directly under the bull, with perhaps a bit of white between bull and front sight. With your bullets striking the center of the black, you are now sighted in with a 300 yard trajectory.

    Years ago I soldered the Ranch/Mini-14 rear site to the back end of the top cover of an AK47 ... it REALLY was an improvement over the standard site. I have since replaced that with a Tech-Site, for many of the same reasons you cited ... and put the same on my SKS. I love the Tech-Site upgrade kit and leave the rubber plugs out for very low light conditions. My only negatives ... on those rifles, the Tech Site looks very clunky and sort of ad hoc. Also the mounting screws on the SKS version loosen up to the point I am thinking about pal-nutting them to keep them torqued properly. I do NOT like scopes and electric stuff on my rifles. I refer folks to your vid on aperture sites all the time.

    Question for you sir. I just replaced the OE rear sight on a really old (190) mini 30 with this tech site. L/R is no problem, but I can’t get enough elevation to put the rounds on bullseye at 50 yds. Elevation adjustment on the tech site is maxed out. Had the same issue with the OE folding peep site. Watched this had the loosening stock peep sight problem etc. Bought this peep sight based of his recommendation and it's a piece of junk. Its a waste of money. Install went ok but the tech sight itself is junk. The peep part on this is manufactured poorly and loosens but instead of your peep sight moving right or left like the stock one when it loosens the tech sight spins or rotates slightly in place to an angle. If tightened it isn't straight but rotated a little at an angle and it can't be straightened out to line up again.

    Is it 7/8 of a minute of angle or 7/8 of an inch? I realize an MOA is roughly 1" at 100 yards but "7/8 of an inch MOA" doesn't compute for me. Please help me understand.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your question. MOA means minute of angle, or one 60th of a degree, which is not precisely one inch per hundred yards for a registered surveyor, but is the accepted term used across the firearms world and the industry to denote exactly one inch per hundred yards, there being no approximations in such usage.
      "MOA" is sufficient to express "one MOA", the latter being redundant. Fractions are stated in common usage, such as 3 MOA, 1-1/2 MOA, MOA, or "half" MOA. If the US Ordnance Department specified to firearms engineers a minimum of 4 MOA per Garand rifle, it meant that such rifle must be able to shoot a 4 inch group of a specified number of shots at 100 yards, irrespective of the fact that a surveyor with his trigonometry and transit may disagree with the Ordnance Department. 7/8 MOA means 7/8ths inch per hundred yards.

    Hi Mr GunBlue, thank you for this wonderful and informative clip. I purchased the techsight for my Mini 14, but while in the process of attempting to remove the existing sight, I stripped the head of the set screw holding it. • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The remedy requires a machinist's expertise, lest it get worse. Essentially, that screw head must be reconfigured to a properly fitting bit with tools you don't have. I would seek the assistance of a gunsmith before going further. It's pretty standard fare for them, and shouldn't cost much.

    Removing the Screw to change the sight can be extremely difficult. That screw is made of weak metal and strips easily. I had to cut the old sight off with a Dremel and I cut a line on the stripped screw so a Flathead screwdriver would unscrew it. A blowtorch on the screw helped loosen the loctite. It was a frightening time.

      After entirely stripping the factory screw trying to remove the original sight, I had to drill it out completely. Well of course my drill bit snapped off and got stuck in the hole, which forced me to have to pound it out with a nail set, irreversibly damaging the female threads. Then I had to get a tap and die set, drill out and expand the hole in the upper receiver and make entirely new threads, which would accept a much larger screw.. eventually I got the tech-sight installed, but what a pain in the balls!

    Should I oil the firing pin

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's absolutely no reason to oil the firing pin. It's hardened, polished steel, and has no friction with the bolt. Oil on it can only attract accumulation of carbon and create sludge that can interfere with its operation. In freezing temperatures, oil can reduce or stop its forward movement, causing misfires. Simply wipe all gun parts with a slightly oiled flannel patch or cloth.

    Thanks for your hard work in making these videos. I want to mention that the retaining screw in the stock Mimi 14 rear site is red thread locker (or the equivalent) installed by Ruger. It's also soft metal. I used the included Allen wrench that came with the tech sites and effectively stripped the screw. I applied heat with a soldering iron used a beveled gunsmithing bit and fat handled screwdriver and further stripped the screw. I will have to tap it or drill the head off and then use locking channel locks too turn it out.. If you do some simple Internet searches you will see this is not an isolated incident. I contacted Ruger to see what their major malfunction is why they would lock tight this screw especially it being soft steel unless they assumed it would never be removed again. Their answer as usual was to send it in. I contacted Tech Sites not that it is their responsibility but they should make the consumer aware of this pitfall. For the novice this could be a no go and having to send the rifle into Ruger, which is always a chore especially in restricted States. Lastely I am informing the author of this video to warn consumers of this pitfall.
    Thanks Again

    I always loved those guns I found them accurate and neat.
    I have never been near an AR-15 never shot one and never will.
    I have held them twice and that was the end of that they did not feel right to me.
    People like them and people buy them,.... but I don't have to.
    I'd take a FNFAL or HK-91 or century's C-308 before I'd take the AR.
    Probably because I saw them in gun magazines in the 80's and 90's.
    I found that the people complaining about the mini-14 couldn't shoot any gun accurately,......if you don't take proper care of a gun you have problem's,.....you must properly clean them,.......their mistake was keeping their ammo on a shelf in a damp barn,......and they couldn't figure out why the gun was not accurate and the stainless gun was rusting.

    The reason that I don't like this system is - you say that CMP shooters can score hits at 600 with peep sights - why then have sights that are cannot easily be adjusted for hold at 600 once zeroed, like the A2 sights? At best, you could zero these sights at 200 yards battle zero distance and call it a day.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not say that a CMP marksman doesn't adjust a peep sight! If you are suggesting that an A2 can be battlesight zeroed for 600 yards, that's an impossible trajectory for any cartridge. The A2 is correctly battlesight zeroed 25 meters on the "z" mark, and is then set back, which gives a point blank trajectory to 300 meters. Point blank does not mean a 300 yard zero; it's closer to 200 yards, keeping a bullet on the human silhouette at 300 for battle virtually all combat purposes. The A2 is dialed up to the appropriate extended ranges, and the Tech Sight is just as adjustable, using its click adjustment wheel. Any adjustable sight, whether it's made of glass or iron, performs the same function to get a bullet on target.

    • @tedhodge4830
      @tedhodge4830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference between the A2 sights and this sight is that the A2 sight has precalibrated BDC range settings, allowing you to get that good BZO at 25 meters at the Z mark, and center holds by using the corresponding range marking at 300-600. I would like to see an elevation adjustment dial with BDC markings on a Mini 14 sight.

    I have to admit, I am unhappy that there is no rear sight for the mini-14 with M-14 or M16A2-style elevation adjustable sights. If there was anything like that on the market, I would throw my AR-15 out the window. I really wish Tech Sights or someone else would make something like that, but it seems to be a dead art form to make BDC iron sights.

      In America, you are free to design, patent, and produce such a sight. Of course, you understand that selling such an expensive product may not appeal to the average Mini-14 owner. I'm not sure what's wrong with the sight I demonstrated. I've been shooting AR rifles since my M-16 in 1969, and the Tech Sight is every bit as adjustable, finely crafted, and solid.

      Plan on taking a Fuddi-14 to Camp Perry or something? 😂
      Cletus and Bubba don’t need no dang fancy elle-vation wheel to shoot rats down at the dump, which is about the only thing the Mini is good for.

    Tec sights are pretty freaking fantastic. Quality product, not arguing its not.
    What I don't get is why the hell you would spend so much for an iron sight when you can get a scout rail or even something cool like the gg&g micro red dot mount and a decent red dot sigt for the same or similar price.
    Don't get me wrong, I love and learned to shoot on irons and think every serious rifle needs a set, but I guarantee anyone who puts that amount of money into a sighting system should invest in a good mount and red dot because they will shoot better, faster and greater practical accuracy than any iron sight, no matter how good. The original iron sights are actually pretty decent, I have seen way worse on much more expensive rifles
    I don't see any reason to pay so much for a rear iron sight when the same or slightly more will get you a red dot on a good mount, AND you will still have the original irons as a back up. If you really want to improve a minis rear sight just drill the hole for sight apature a little bigger.
    Especially if you want fine adjustability, a red dot sight will very easily and repeatedly adjust in 1/2 or even 1/3 moa per click, and if you change to some ammo that doesn't match your old zero, all you have to do is unscrew the red dots and make however many clicks you need
    They make red dots now that have an enclosed emiter that can't get covered or obscured, etched reticles or solar power or tritium or fiberoptics so they don't need batteries to work, and are nitrogen filled so they can't fog up on the inside

    Gunblue490, you have the very best mini-14 videos! I have used them to polish up my trigger assembly and change my factory peep sights. I just can't thank you enough. I also installed a barrel stabalizer. I love this little rifle. I may pick up a mini-30 and give it the same treatment.

    THANK YOU! I am looking for that sight now, because I put a fancy peep sight set on my cheapo Marlin 795, and then I found an old Lisenfled scope at a thrift store mounted it on see through high mount rings, and that $200 .22 LR Marlin has about $1700 in fine German glass on it and $160 sights. Lisefeld is up there with Khales, Bender & Schmitt, high end Swarovski, high end Leupold & very high end Vortex. Kahles is an African safari scope for rich Europeans, and so was Lisenfeld. $1700 glass brings light into the shadows. That Mini 14 is a sexy looking rifle!!!

    Put Tech Sights on my Marlin 795 22lr. My 64yo eyes can hit anything out to 50 yards, which is as far as I need. Tack driver! With the 795 you get a taller replacement post for the front sight, which you must use. otherwise it is the same.

    Dear GunBlue,
    At 20:49, i saw a crack on ur dry thumb tip. This happens often in dry Winter and doesn't
    heal soon enough. I suggest u to apply a dab of cream made for heel cracks.
    To use, cut off a thumb portion of a Latex glove to sheath the creamed thumb,
    and use a rubber band to hold that latex piece on. If ur allergic to Latex, just use a band
    aid strip over the thumb vertically, then wrap the band aid w masking tape or rubber band.
    Make sure to squeeze the cream into the crack!!! Yah, the crack really hurts and even
    bleed but this treatment should work in 3 - 4 days. Re-apply 2 x per day. Finger tips r
    very sensitive w a lot of nerve endings. The powerful cream for the foot heel crack works
    great! U can get the flat can cream for ~$7 at CVS stores, will last many yrs of applications.
    Thx for ur dedication for our important Constitutional Law of the Land, our rights to bear
    arms and for our enjoyments as a hobby to make our guns better.
    Yes, i like Peep Sights over scopes etc. And wished even the expensive rifles of nowadays
    have iron sights. Not all of us r scope fan. A rifle doesn't look like a rifle w/o the iron sights
    on the bbl and the rcvr, esp. on the bbl's front!!!! Too bad many of the rifle's receiver have
    no tapped twin holes on the side for EZr peep sight mounting. Dove Tail is OK.

    I changed my sling mounts to the machined Uncle Mike ones that are removable. The stainless one I put the Houge over molded stock. I don’t like modifying my guns but I just couldn’t accept the cheap plastic stock that comes on the stainless versions. The blues one came with a wood stock that is nice looking. I wish Ruger would over the premium factory wood stock for sale. They made a version for a while that had a walnut premium wood stock. It was beautiful stock. I shot a couple mags thru the stainless one and really liked the rifle

    Have tech sights on my Mini 14 197 model that had the cheapo flip sight like they had on the 10/22. Absolutely love the tech sights. Have you installed a scope on this gun yet? I just recently got a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 scope as a christmas gift and I'm going to mount it using the Ruger style rings so I can easily remove the scope and use my iron sights when needed. Only issue I'm running into is figuring out what height scope rings are needed to clear the rear sight since it is fairly tall.

    I have to admit I was really down on the mini 14. the first one i bought in 2008 and right out of the box I disliked it. I felt it was made with really poor quality control ( thats a longer story ) I traded it in and ordered a wood stocked stainless steel mini 14 model. That new gun , out of the box, had the front sight off at an angle about 5 degrees - I took it back to the gunshop and my FFL said outloud " Fkn Ruger " , I don't know if the older models had better QC but the older ones I shot and loved are what inspired me to buy one. I kept the gun, I am an iron sight person, not a fan of scopes or optics except on my deer rifle. Thank you for this video, now inspired , Ill get the mini 14 out of the safe and get to it.

    One thing to note, I’ve replaced three mini 14 with tech sights but reused the original screw two later model post 2005 the provided screws was slightly undersized and the 2005 used a smaller screw than shipped. Other than that there excellent sights.

    @gunblue490 I was just curious if you have or have heard anybody taking a small drill bit and opening that hole up on that peep site? I know you said you had had cataract surgery already and for those of us that haven’t yet it seems to be a bit of a struggle. I was told that it can be done you just have to be careful because it’s plastic.

    I'd recommend using a ratchet torx wrench to remove the torx screw which Ruger lock-tited in to hold the original Ruger site on the Mini-14. The little torx wrench supplied with the Tech Site replacement site is not up to the job.
