Turbo Oil Drain Do's and Don'ts. No More RTV! [Tech Tip Tuesday]

  • Turbo Feed and Drain Sizing, Components, and Details can be the most important factor in the lifespan, performance, and durability of a turbocharger.
In today's tech tip tuesday we talk about oil drains. While RTV silicone gasket maker has a wide variety of uses. We feel that it should be avoided when working with installing an oil drain flange. As you have seen in the video the rtv can dry and create a blockage from flow. Even worse those overhanging globs can come off and get into other places they shouldn't.
The simple principles of a turbo is that it needs high (ish) pressure oil in, and no restriction out. When a blockage happens on the outflow, the pressure needs to find a place to go. Because the engine still delivers copius amounts of oil, the oil tends to work its way out the shaft seals and into housings. This creates issues across the board. You do not want oil in your intake piping or intercooler, and you also do not want oil in your exhaust as it will ruin Wideband O2 sensors, create clouds of smoke that makes it look like Uncle Buck driving your race car, not to mention decrease turbo lifespan.
Gaskets are a usable option, however, in many cases the gaskets do not have the appropriate size hole and can also become a blockage. Additionally, when taking things apart, if you do not have another gasket this can become a frustration point. Plus they simply do not always seal the best.
Which leads us to our new high flow drain flanges with integrated high temp orings. There is enough crush area to equal great sealing across the board. Our funnel design allows for no blockages. To seat the O-ring we use a dove tail cutter which retains the Oring. This means that there are no worries about it coming apart and stretching when taking things apart, and also you can install easily on vehicle, and did we mention reuse it?

I rub a thin layer of Honda bond on every oil drain gasket, let it dry completely and it'll never leak and you can reuse it.

RTV is fine so long as you're not idiot about it. More is definitely not better. If people would just follow the instructions on the tube RTV works well as a sealant for a turbo drain however there are better options out there, as we see here.

I personally use the rtv on drain gaskets and just like you mentioned if you apply it correctly everything should be fine.

I can name one turbo company that told me to use rtv on the drain which I refused to. They told me their surface was flat and the factory was not and also my aftermarket drain flange was not either. So I sent their turbo back and went with a better turbo company

Rob Rohe we have a 12AN version for the large and mid frame. To run a 12an and fit in a small to mid frame it’ll have to be an extended length piece. We will be working on one for the near future

Was this really just you trying to sell me that flange or were you actually trying to tell me about turbo oil drain, what about the engine side of the line, under oil line or over? Why not directly next to oil pickup... Not very informative video sorry, all i learned was that you really want me to buy that flange you yappin about.
