They're called "rag curls" started in the 1950s. We did it with strips of rags. We usually tore up strips from an old bedsheet or old towel we no longer used.

I told my friend let’s act like we’re groupies to get back stage so I can ask him about his hair care routine 😅 I’m always on a quest to perfect my curls and will ask anyone I come across as to what they use/do. Especially a guy who is on the road cause he doesn’t have time to be too complicated 😁

I used to curl my slightly-longer-than-chin length hair using a flat iron and found that to be particularly effective for getting the desired twists of the curl while not having much length to wrap around anything. It took some practice to get used to the technique but once I did, I could dry and curl my hair in less than 15 minutes. If you haven’t tried the flat-iron-as-a-curling-tool, I highly recommend it especially for hair that is not long enough to be wrapped around other styling implements! There are tons of how-to-videos here on TH-cam to help show how to use a flat iron to curl hair if anyone is interested!!
