but progress needs majority to conformed into. that's why the reasonable man actually played a role too they can fit themselves into the aforementioned progress. in other way, the unreasonable man is the conductor while the reasonable man is the choir team. too many conductors can't held a choir show.

i don't think trent roznor gets nearly enough credit. talk about a supergroup when you have a sorkin script, fincher directing, and reznor providing that dark ambience is hard to mess up
I think Reznor's score is up there with the greatest scores in the history of Hollywood. It may even be the greatest. How's that for credit?
As a fan of Nine Inch Nails in the 90s, it really surprised me when I learned Reznor had transitioned into scoring films. It did not surprise me that he is great at it.
@@Sam_on_TH-cam Reznor was friends with Fincher and Fincher approached him. At first he turned Fincher down, but then he regretted it and, assuming Fincher had already filled the position, asked to be considered for his next project. Fincher actually hadnt filled the position, and so Reznor got the job.
Reznor wrote The Social Network main score by composing something based on how the script made him feel. Not watching the footage, not syncing anything, just based on that feeling alone. I can only imagine Fincher's response when he first heard it, like angels singing from heaven or something, for all of his intuition was 100% vindicated, and then some. Not only is it the perfect score, but it is the complete opposite of the music Sorkin called out in the script. It is everything Fincher could have wanted, and then some.
This film is a modern Great Gatsby

What 'The Social Network' is 'really' about ( at least more than the manifold sub-themes cited in the video ) is the drive most of us have to improve our social standing and the vast insecurity that lies behind it. Facebook is primarily a tool by which to feel one is improving one's social standing. The great ironic theme of the film is that this tool, which makes so many millions feel like socially connected 'insiders,' was devised by a disconnected and distinct 'outsider.' Facebook is the ironic revenge of the marginalized, unwanted nerd, who made himself the king of modern social 'connection' by creating his own kingdom and inviting in a billion social subjects. Placing himself at the apex of the most powerful social tool in human history, Mark Zuckerberg became the puppet-master of all the social strings which connect the millions of people who themselves use Facebook to reassure themselves they are grabbing a tiny slice of the same peer acceptance that their king was never granted until he created a world in which to fill that very need.
Absolutely, there are so many dynamics in this film, I couldn't even list them all. Social status, social structures, revenge, hatred, self hatred, communication, control, there is so much going on in this film. But I still think that at its deepest level, The Social Network is about how for some people it is easier to change the world than it is to change themselves. The dynamics you describe fit into this deeper level meaning perfectly.
We didn’t necessarily see anyone change themselves in the film. Eduardo has a handsome, likeable guy that grew into a handsome, confident man bouyed by his education and wealth. The other characters didn't chane much because they didnt have to. They were already “in”. Zuckerberg needed to change to connect with others, but was unable to. I dont fault him because changing yourself is incredibly hard. Now, we have a better understanding of the need for therapy, meditaion, self-reflection, etc. We like to see a development arch, to see people try to become better. But in a way, Zuckerberg’s vast intelligence and creativity prevented him from performing any real self-examination, and he became emotionally and developmentally stuck. By hiding behind his acerbic wit and Facebook, he never took th opportunity to grow and change. This, to me, was a cautionary tale. That, like Rooney Mara’s character said, if you spend all if your time trying to control outward things instead of improving yourself, you’ll end up in pain and alone.
This film is a total masterpiece. I was fortunate enough to watch this in theatres when I was 16. I knew this would be amazing and when I saw it, it exceeded my expectation. We won’t get a treasure like this for decades, unfortunately.

I watched it when I was around 19, you know that age when you wanna do sth, be someone and have big impact in the world. Also at a cross point whether to get into college just to get a degree (for job employment of course), or ditch higher education cos I always see it as another institutionalised capitalism (less about real skills). I remembered thinking "wtf is this move about" cos it ain't like any other documentary life sketch. But one thing I realised, every decision has its opportunity cost. It was about priority over values: curiosity, dedication on getting sth done, friendship, etc.

Its interesting that you say "it ain't like any other documentary life sketch" because TSN completely changed the genre of the biopic, more than almost everyone seems to realize

This is a movie I've been discussing (ranting about) with my friends for a while. I was also really inspired by Every Frame A Painting and frustrated by other channels that I don't think get into film with the depth they deserve.
Communication is the tool that enables society, our relationships are dependent on it... yet, the minds that can come up with progress and geniality are usually not adept to it.
Mark the character, creates a tool that allows for unchecked virtual communication all around the world, yet his isolation persists.
As an entrepreneur and obsessive this is what I took from this film. Thank you for noticing.

Thank you for explaning why I liked the film so much! I could never really grasp or even tell people why. I just felt it. I felt the “theme” of the film and why the characters change (or don’t). Also I like the way you present your ideas. Normally I’d be sick of yet another video eassy on TH-cam, but I think you put a lot of thought into your videos and don’t just try to be smart (I feel like a lot of video essay creators give off that vibe). This movie is also my pick for best movie of the century. I agree with all your points and I really like the fact that Fincher and Sorkin put so much care into any tiny detail which makes every viewing even more interesting. What I think The Social Network is really about : Mark's unconventional love for Erica and how he finally can't get over her besides his game changing success.
Sorkin is actually putting some tiny details about it : one that actually reveal this theme 1 hour into the film. During a meeting between the Facebook founders at Harvard: Mark asks Eduardo to put an article about Facebook in the BU's journal (Erica's school) and even saying that he is ready to give 10 hours of free code lessons to get the article published.
Anyway, great video for a game changing movie !

Your videos are incredible. I used to watch cinema sins and just took a look at honest trailers. Your videos are by far, not just more in depth, but truly find the underlying meaning that nobody really understands just by hearing about the movie, or even watching it just one time. The level of understanding you achieve in every one of your videos, far surpasses what anyone I know is even capable of in their own lives. It’s as if you can break down and analyze every single detail, including ones that aren’t even visible, and draw conclusions that would only be understood if you knew what people were thinking before the movie was ever even made! If you don't already know about it, I also highly recommend Every Frame A Painting. Big influence on my videos, and I think he gets into things with a similar depth that I do. Most other video essays don't, which I find frustrating and is why I made this channel. I do enjoy Honest Trailers though.
It isn't necessarily an idea of something nobody else sees, but rather that he's able to find a different interpretation of the same movie.

In the end, you talk about how the film is about the artist. That reminded me of a game, The Beginner's Guide, and interpretations of the game, telling not to mistake the work for the artist. I would take that in consideration, but not denying there might be, at least to some extent and in one way or another, a glimpse of the artist in his work.
I've found your channel because of 500 days of summer today, and have watched also the ones about Infinity War, Carrie and Whiplash. It feels refreshing and original, not showing only what is obvious, but also pointing to details I guess I'd never thought of. Great job, and, please, keep it up : )

I think the film is really about social anxiety and the fear of rejection. Mark is never really jerk he just doesn't know how to act with people. Somehow he believes he could overcome it, if he changed the entire structure of social interactions. But in the end he didn't get what he hoped for. His anxiety just transferred to a new medium. People who profited from Facebook where the ones that are already well adapted. They didn't need it, however they were the one's who used it.
That absolutely is in the film. Mark doesn't know how to interact with people, and tries to change the entire way the world interacts because of this. But in the end, while the way the world communicates has changed, Mark is still the same
He definitely has some fairly bad qualities like the jealousy he feels and the insecurity as well which leads into him doing stupid shit. But I do think that the guy just wasn't given the treatment he should have gotten. He's a character who was smarter than everyone, but didn't know how to communicate with anyone. He always seems blunt, rude, and uncaring to others even though we know that isn't true. We know he clearly values Edwardo, and his team at Facebook, but he never is capable of properly communicating this.
This was a very interesting, well-rounded, and inspiring movie analysis. I really enjoyed your script. Thank you

@@MoviesUnderTheSurface I do and will. I think a very interesting topic for your next video would be misogyny. Especially in Sergio Leones Once Upon a Time in America and Godards Le Mepris. Because I had a lot discussions, also with myself weather or not these movies are misogynystic...In their core I love these movies...but somehow I allways had trouble with the depiction of the female characters and tried to explain to myself if the message about gender in these movies matters at all. If the story is just the story and we can accept the doings in the movie as a part of it, not as a message.

Thank you for explaining to me what it is I don't like about this movie. A couple talented jerks who think they're better for having never gotten formal training wrote a story about a talented jerk who never got any formal training being the sad hero. As someone who thought he was that talented and realized while getting formal training that he was actually just a semi-talented jerk and learned to be more empathetic, that kind of story just makes me wish more suffering and loneliness on the protagonist until they "grow up."
Well, if it is true that for him it is easier to change the world than it is to change himself, then he might never grow up. Do you wish suffering and loneliness on him forever then?
I don't think anybody's just incapable of being a decent human being. The Zuckerberg of the film treats everyone he meets (Except Sean Parker) like he's just better than them, and then I'm supposed to feel bad for him? No way. It's not difficult to not be an arrogant jerk. Just treat people the way you want to be treated.
@@tristanwilliford9099 Yes, but that's a pretty un-nuanced look at the situation. What you have in Mark Zuckerburg is a completely socially awkward character, unable to change himself, unable to properly communicate his feelings to others, and constantly getting himself in bad situations and losing people he cares about because of his mistakes. He's a character who chooses to be arrogant and a know-it-all because he's simply unable to get himself to be anything else. It's why, even though he's as successful as he is, he's more isolated than ever before.

yes, he is definitely one of my favorite filmmakers, and one of the best working today
I haven't seen all of those, but as good as Social Network was, at least 2 of them (Se7en and Fight Club) were better. Best of the last 30 years is way too bold a statement. It isn't even the best film by Fincher in that time span.

This is a great analysis. I love this film so much but when I tell about this movie to my friends they all just assume that this movie is about the creating of Facebook. In reality, that narrative is just a vehicle for the storytelling. David Fincher is truly a remarkable director.
Don't forget Sorkin's amazing screenplay as well!

awesome! one of the most powerful techniques to uncover the meaning of a film is comparing the first and last scenes, and even moreso the first and last shots. These are super important and any director worth his salt spends a lot of time figuring them out

I feel like this was overthought. The "heart" of the story wasn't "change", it was their friendship and Mark's insecurity-driven destruction of it.

Wonderful video! I loved your take and analysis of the film! I also think the film is written from the perspective of Edward. That is why we see Mark as the unchanging immature backstabbing social outcast, why we see the twins as uppity entitled high society snobs, and why Sean Parker is a partying immature mistress of Mark’s. This is also why we sympathize with Edward from the beginning to the end. This is the story of Mark and Facebook told through the eyes of Edward. What do you think of my take on the perspective of this movie?
Interesting, I never thought of it that way. I'm still not sure the exact perspective of the film, I lean towards Mark's (because he is the only one privvy to all the scenes in the film, either through being there, the depositions, or him imagining what happened) but I like your theory. Eduardo actually probably was privvy to all the scenes in his film same as Mark was, since everything he wasn't there for was discussed specifically in his deposition.
Oh wait, Eduardo wouldn't be privvy to the Winklevii deposition, except for the brief moment when he was there
Movies Under The Surface I don't think it is Mark's perspective because he would not have portrayed himself as such a sad and lonely backstabbing traitor. If it was his perspective then Mark would be the one we all sympathize with and see Edward as the uninspired party pooper getting in the way of greatness. Notice that we had no idea that Mark was going to dilute Edward's shares until Edward himself found out about this betrayal? If it was through Mark's perspective then we would have had a scene where Mark and Sean discussed how undeserving Edward was to the success of Facebook and how this lame leeched would be cut out for the good of the company. I see this story being told as if Edward were writing a memoir years later but Mark is the protagonist; kind of like a Gatsby but Gatsby is a jerk and traitor.
Movies Under The Surface I think if Edward were re-telling this story then he could have gotten his hands onto some details about the Twins' meetings or maybe through articles and some guesswork.
@@axsun1918 I think from Mark's perspective, Mark is not portrayed poorly in the film. I don't think Mark is portrayed as a backstabbing traitor, he is portrayed as someone who was in a no win situation and did what he had to do, but did regret how it went down. Mark never thought Eduardo was a lame leech, he just thought he wasn't ambitious enough and didn't have the vision for where their project was going. Mark was very sympathetic to Eduardo in the final scene, something I dont think we would have saw from any perspective other than his own. Especially him saying "you didn't have to be that rough on him" to Sean; I don't think Eduardo would imagine or have any idea that Mark would say that.

Mark is a narcissist, an egotistical manipulator obsessed with social status that he is emotionaly uncapable of handling, but behind all of this, he is a lonely kid that wants to be loved, but doesn't know how.

2. You say it doesn't matter how accurate it is to the real life counterparts, but if the real life counterparts are the filmmakers, and the depth of the film originates from how the characters reflect them, wouldn't it matter how accurate the reflection is?

I'm not interested in how similar Mark Zuckerberg the character is to Mark Zuckerberg the person, but I am interested in how Mark Zuckerberg the character is like Sorkin, Fincher, and any other filmmakers who put themselves into this film.

That's a difficult question to answer. Ultimately, if the film works, nothing else matters. But based on what I know about filmmaking, and also my own experience as a filmmaker, you can't make a film like this without accurately representing at least some truth about yourself. However, for films not like Social Network, for example films that are less personal and more entertainment focused, that might not be true.
@@MoviesUnderTheSurface I think the part of art that is valuable outside of entertainment is the part where it reflects reality. So if the filmmakers misrepresented themselves, wouldn't that diminish its artistic value? Do you think well made art is good art even if it is completely wrong about its subject?
I agree with everything you are saying. The only thing I would add is that not all movies are art, some are solely entertainment.
Not that it matters much, but this masterpiece lost at the Oscars to The King's Speech.
King's Speech is a really good film, but Social Network is better imo
its about class. Sorkin said so.
changing the world vs changing yourself and class aren't necessarily different. what about class did sorkin say it was about?
