    I was in a small town in southern Scotland when I heard Joy Division. Life-changing music, as a confused teenager in a nowhere place, their music affected me. A unique band who have only happened at that time. The greatest British band of all. They went deeper than anyone else could into an emotional territory that no-one else could manage to reach into. You can feel it. Still.

      Lived outside of Chicago but man that is spot on to where I was at that time. To me Unknown Pleasures is the greatest debut album of all time.

      Alicia Young, I had very similar feelings about Joy Division /New Order. I lived in a small New England town in the States but had an awesome Ivy League College Radio Station where I discovered Joy Division as a very solitary teen. It meant the world to me to have something in JD that reached into previously uncharted places emotionally that I could truly call my own and relate to. And I still feel that way today with JD and New Order,especially heightened in modern times with the release of the Get Ready lp. The beauty of it became (as the decades passed in my life) that you could call it your own music just for you and many people around the world could call it their own simultaneously and it really was. Closer still welcomes me listening to it earlier tonight.
      Growing up in the late 70s and early 80s I truly feel like most of the really good music of the 80s was birthed by Joy Division. Still.

    I'm about a decade younger than the band, but I recall my delight as a young kid at finding a bootleg copy of the Warsaw album with just plain packaging and a sheet listing the tracks produced on an early photocopier. Later I bought Unknown Pleasures and managed to get a bootleg Live at Eindhoven cassette. All this as a clueless child in Melbourne, about as far from Manchester as you can get, but I was entranced by the music of this strange band from the other side of the world.

    Thank you for this! Words cannot convey how important these two bands are, to me. I’ve been a fan, ever since the first time I heard New Order, as a 14 year old (in 1985). Shortly thereafter, I had my first exposure to Joy Division and that was the moment that I realized, everything I knew up to that point was bullshit. It’s no coincidence that thousands of Midwestern Rust Belt kids, like myself, connected with Joy Division.

    I was a tad late when I first played Unknown Pleasures. I was 15 in 1982 and had in my collection of vinyl Movement from New Order and a good friend of mine told me the story of the band before New Order.....Joy Division and the tragedy that surrounded it. The next day I drove to my local record store and searched for Unknown Pleasures and found out they didn't have any copies and it would take months before they even had a chance of getting any. I was devastated ( more like pissed because I had no good outlet to express my feelings ) So I waited. In the mean time I would go out to the teen clubs that surrounded the local university and got my first taste of Joy Division when the DJ played Transmissions. It was every thing that was swimming in my head and taking up space in my thoughts when there was no sound. A lifetime relationship began after that evening and I haven't stopped the music since.

    I had a friend growing up named Jorge who was Portugal and every summer visited with his family. When he returned he usually had stories about the trip but in the summer of 1980 he brought back with him ( we were both 15 years old in 1980 ) a cassette. His cousin had played the cassette of a new band she liked that a friend that went to college in Manchester England sent to her. The cassette was a panasonic black and white cassette that you can record on. He presses play and I just knew i was listening to some one who was trying to tell me something and i better listen. As a future musician , musically it was not of my current world. New Order became my soundtrack to the entire 1980's decade, seriously. I saw New Order for the 1st time in 1983 in NYC at the Paradise Garage in the summer, saw them 5 more times until 2003. They are part of my DNA. Thanks.

    Like most teenagers I always felt alone, disjointed and not in the great run of everyone else. I first heard Blue Monday in late 1983, then Movement and then Procession. It was as if my nebulous ether was coalescing and I didn't feel quite so out of place, or more to the point, I no longer cared. This made sense and it appealed to me like nothing else, nothing came even close.
    This was before the internet so information was valuable as it was hard to come by but I then got Still and Unknown Pleasures. UP was my first tattoo on my right arm and the Procession 7" was my second, on my left arm and I will carry both to the grave with pride. My life has been quite a mixture of various sources and I have enjoyed it immensely, not least by the discovery made back in '83.

    One of the first bands that caught my attention,not because my musical taste was perfect (i was 13 or 14), it was one of few cassettes that i recorded from radio show. I was listening to UNKNOWN PLEASURES for two years thinking it is CLOSER. I was living in a small village (still living there) in socialist Yugoslavia,we were well informed about new music,but it was hard to get some stuff. We could buy some records in regular record shops (STRANGLERS,CLASH,THE JAM,ELVIS COSTELLO,LENE LOVICH,BUZZCOCKS,STIFF LITTLE FINGERS,VIBRATORS,EDDIE AND THE HOT RODS,MADNESS,SPECIALS and so on...) but not JOY DIVISION. Lucky for me,Italy was only about 100 km far,so Triest was our biggest record shop. And mail orders from the west. Good times,every new record was exciting (and expensive),i knew every song. Now it's easy to get new stuff,all you need is a smartphone.

    • @VinceBShad
      @VinceBShad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it was a very mediocre album, and more a collection of songs from a new band trying to find itself, than a true great LP, and it was never actually released - (Though all the songs from it appeared on various compilations in later years). In fact, not allowing the release of Warsaw was one of the best moves Rob Gretton ever made. You only get one chance to make a debut album, and history shows that Unknown Pleasures was one of the greatest ever. Warsaw would not have been.

    Wow what a glossed over the first episode. Joy Division music ringing loudly in the background. How about telling people for the first entire year the band was together they were called Warsaw And they made a fairly possible punk rock album. It would have been nice to hear a lot of the albums music in the first episode. Because they did not happen upon the Joy Division sound until about a year after they had been going when Martin Hannah got a hold of them. And slowed them down in tempo and added a whole bunch of special effects and they made a fairly possible punk rock album. It would have been nice to hear a lot of the albums music in the first episode. Because they did not happen upon the joy division sound until about a year after they had been going when Martin Hannah got a hold of them. And slowed them down in tempo and added a whole bunch of special effects. Like a science-fiction movie background noises. Also this first episode completely missed missed that near obsession with Nazi paraphernalia and imagery which appeared on the first EP an ideal for living. Which had to have its cover photo changed because even for punk rock it was too m. uch to have a Nazi German drummer boyOn the cover. I could also talk a little bit about Macclesfield well the singer and a drummer were from. I’m sure not all the action happened in abandoned warehouses in Manchester. I always find it amusing how people like to have a revisionist history rather than the real deal that actually happened at the time
