Some degree of pressure will be required to feel the pulse, but excessive pressure could compress the vessel, making the pulse difficult to feel. The degree of pressure needed will vary from patient to patient. The pulse rate (per minute) is calculated by counting the number of pulses palpated for 15 seconds and multiplying by 4. Absence of a palpable pulse (or a significant change in pulse quality) with an audible heartbeat is called a pulse deficit. That is why when making a medical note in the patient record, a normal pulse is "strong and synchronize"
