    Hello Family, new Gardner here with a question! I'm planting in containers because I live in a small space. My question is about squash. I planted from seed in the container. It has just put out true leaves about a week or so. The only thing Ive done differently is put a small container in the soil beside the plant. Drilled holes on the bottom and side of the small container and doing mini composting within the container and covered. It has scrap paper kitchen scraps and soil so far. The next I woke up to an inch and a half growth of 2 mushrooms beside my squash plant. Is it safe? Do I leave them? Please help!

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gary responding. A lot of mushroom species feed on wood. They are likely feeding on the paper, being a wood product and will help to break it down. It is normal to see them. It's ok to leave them, they will die off once they've done their job. I wouldn't touch them. If you have any concerns you could remove them, just don't handle them with bare hands. I am not familiar with all the mushroom species so I treat them all with caution.

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gary responding. I don't have; or see, mosquito wrigglers in my ponds. The fish and dragonfly larvae eat them before they are visable. In cooler weather adults do come in. It's warming up enough for the dragonflies to emerge, so from now till fall I can work in my garden and not be bothered. We have day and nightime mosquito species and the dragonflies do a good job of taking care of both. Thanks Debbie.

    The ponds look like their water isnt moving, how do you keep them from becoming stagnant? Great video, thank you

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gary responding. Thank you. Each pond has a solar fountain pump that breaks and agitates the water surface a little. Each is set up a little different. The three with the small wading pools in the center have a slow circular flow, duck weed, no hair algae and no dragonfly nymphs. The two with only pots have the least amount of circulation, less duck weed, lots of hair algae but have dragonfly nymphs present. The surface water isn't stagnant but the bottom of the ponds are mucky. I spent a lot of time cleaning my original pond until I discoverered dragonfly nymphs hiding in the hair algae and the detritus on the bottom. I want to raise dragonflies so I let some of the ponds run wild.

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      By having everything mixed up and growing together I don't have many real pest issues. The birds and benificial insects clear out pest insects and create a natural balance. Some birds eat some plants but that brings in the insect eaters as they feel safe. There's plenty for everyone. I haven't had to deal with Zuccini beetles.

    How does the wicking pool work? Are there holes in the inner pool? If so , Does the dirt come from the holes to the outer pool then? Do you have a pump to filter the water? Need a video on construction of a wicking pool!

    Brilliant way to water with fish fertilizer built in. Wow- rhubarb and beans from the giant's garden! And I'm envious of your artichokes, haha. Started two plants last year, but we're in the NE. Any advice about growing them would be much appreciated! Is sprouting broccoli the same as broccoli rabe? Thanks for all you guys do - wonderful information!

      Gary responding. Thank you. Here artichokes grow as perrenials. I don't know how to grow them away from a mediterranean climate, but I believe some people grow them in Great Brittain as annuals. If you can get them growing again they may flower in their second year. Robbie purchased the sprouting broccoli online labelled sprouting broccoli. It may have been seed sold for microgreens?

    🇬🇧 My purple sprouting broccoli (early and late) are a winter veg. Oct early and end of March late. Those look as if they are going to seed. This garden is absolutely amazing. 👍👍 And no pests ! I'm surprised he doesn't grow comfrey to use for plant food and the bees love the flowers.

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary responding. Thank you. Yes the sprouting brocolli is going to seed. We grow many brassica's as perrenials. The lessor goldfinches feed on the seeds and often on the leaves. In the wilder section of my garden I grow a number of large leafy edible plants instead of comfrey. They work well for compost and also attract pollinators. By keeping things on the wild side nature moves in and feeds on most of the insects.

    Robbie, have you ever put your totes into larger totes that you can fill with water to wick into the tote - like Gary has done with the pools?

    What was Gary’s Garden Space used for in the past? Was it enclosed with a roof? Such a pretty space.
    I wish I had a wall like that, I love playing outdoor racquet ball alone at my own pace. Unfortunately America doesn’t build many outdoors and I’m not into playing hoops alone. When I lived in West Hollywood, I played outdoors but the floor surface was falling apart. I think it was shut down and cleared out since I left a few years ago.

      Gary responding. Thanks. It may have been a barn/stable for horses. It had some crumbling roof material left when we bought the property which I removed.

    Its a wonder why you haven't put shade cloth on the top of your wooden structure. With the extreme heat you have in summer it would be so beneficial. Great garden, amazing Rhubarb. Never seen some with leaves that big. Love your garden and garden tours. Thanks

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gary responding. Thank you. I have some shade cloth in strategic places for my turmeric and ginger, I just need to get something set up for the exposed rhubarb and in the back for my bananas. The rest of the plants do well with the sun shade, sun shade that they get from being under the rafters.

I really appreciate the way you have consideration for everything in your garden, plants, animals, insects and yourself. It’s like a miniature ecosystem. Thank you so much for sharing your gardening knowledge and experience. I have learned so much. I’m glad to know all of you are well. Take care. Blessings

    The mint pond is such a great idea. We planted chocolate mint and a couple other types about 20 years ago and it took almost that long to get rid of them again. My parents couldn't kill the mint under the deck until they took the whole deck out. Every time i mowed the lawn it smelled like mint lol

    Robbie how do you fix Malabar Spinach to eat? Do you mix them with other salad greens or do you have to cook it. I thought about growing some. Does it taste good?

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gary responding. I like the taste, Robbie not so much. It is mild but has an okra like texture that some people aren't fans of. I eat it mostly raw but sometimes I batter and pan fry it.
