New rider finds himself in quite the predicament as his ski catches fire and sinks!
How would you save your jetski from sinking?
What would you do in a scenario like this?
Would you panic?
What if you were riding completely alone?
Whether its a Yamaha, Kawasaki, or Seadoo. We will all eventually be in this scenario. Be kind and help a person in need.
Follow us as we go for a test ride on a couple of Kawasaki stx 160's on the Metedeconk River in the Barnegat Bay as we find someone in a little bit of trouble.
Situations like this happen all the time. They can happen to you and they happen to me. Safety is key to an enjoyable summer, specially when your kids are involved. Know what to look for and these situations can be avoided and dealt with appropriately.

This was my first thought!!!!!! Regardless if it was a customers JetSki, he should’ve had a tow rope… This is where I gave him NO accountability When he was annoyed, the kids didn’t have one
Felt bad for the buyer. Felt better when he said he didnt pay yet. Then felt really sorry for the seller when the "buyer" didnt know what plugs were. So thats why the kid and dad were so calm! Quite the rollercoaster..its gonna make a great Judge Judy episode!

These are not our skis and we're out on test rides for diagnostics. We happen to come across this kid in the middle of a work day. Fully clothed and not out for a joy ride or prepared to go swimming. Jumping in the water was never going to happen. We would never use a customers ski to tow any vehicle, Who would replace the parts if they break? The best I could do was try to nudge him but a sinking ski is a sinking ski. I clearly state that there was an electrical fire, unless everyone has smellovision that fact would go beyond comprehension.
So to break it down.
The ski obviously was sinking first, causing the electrical issue. The ski did not run or why get involved, lol. The area everyone claims to take on water is actually a wet storage area and takes on water no matter what. My advice for a fire extinguisher is common sense because where there is smoke there most likely is gunna be....
Or we can wait to actually see a fire to make decisions.
For some reason everyone is calling out steam and that's ok.
One thing to take from this. It's very obvious how the media is capable of tricking the entire country.
I assumed overheat from the start which the internet latched onto and the amount of smoke and smell of electrical wires is what made me tell him to take out the fire extinguisher.
The last thing I'd ever do tho is bring a vehicle that could potentially be on fire next to tall grass. Which is next to houses.
I'm sure I missed some areas of explanation but ill leave it at this.

This is why I have a rope with a carabiner on both ends with my ski. If it starts to sink every second matters. You can quickly clip the carabiner on both vessels in seconds and start towing it to the shore/ramp/dock. Generally if a ski or boat is moving forward it will take on water far slower.
This dude with his camera, try and leave your camera at home and go out one weekend without it. No phone no camera and watch how much more you enjoy life. Bonus you won’t say or do 80% of the dumb shit you were doing and most likely do every time you go out with the camera on. Constantly, thinking about the “shot”, your viewers, what it’ll look like, what the response will be and all that has completely overwhelmed your ability to enjoy yourself out there. Let alone be of any fucking assistance. Put the camera down. Enjoy your life, as is.
He's a mechanic on a diagnostic run, camera is proof to the customer of what's going on with the ski. It's pretty smart if you ask me.

Id didn't check my drain plugs, and both were open during my entire first ride this summer. Thankfully i didn't sink. Manual says the machine has an electronic bilge pump...??
They do. Depending on brand and model, not every ski has an electric bilge system. This ski may have had some sort of exhaust leak as well but we may never know.

I've saved a few sunk skis. It was much easier in the 2 stroke days but this one looks salvageable. If there was an electrical fire it was probably the starter wire or voltage regulator.
If I’m ever sinking and this guy shows up to help I’m going to ask him to just let me sink and go about his day

My 17 yr son just run 2013 Seadoo GTX without both plugs in - just to "test the ski"... 30 min we took it out realizing the mistake - there was just a little bit of water - maybe a gallon inside...

The red stx had sand clogging the cooling system while the black stx had driveline issues.

It looks to me like he started sinking because he was standing on the right side and had that compartment open. Only thing he could have did was tell the kid to sit back towards the front. He was already sinking it by standing on the one side so I dont know why everyone is saying that you hit him and made him sink. Sigh lol edit: nevermind I guess it was the drain plugs. At least it didnt go all the way under. Good job man.

That amount of smoke coming from that compartment is definitely an electrical fire and I guarantee he made that assessment base on visual and the smell as you're not gonna get a nasty smell from steam lol.

This guy also couldn't give a tow or push the ski because as he said in the video, he's on a test run as he is a mechanic so this isn't HIS ski. Obviously he doesn't have a tow rope and even if he did he isn't going to risk damage to a customers ski.
Watching the whole video and listening to everything gives context. I was on the side of "this guy sunk this kids ski" until I watched the video and used more than 1 brain cell to understand you know what, this guys a mechanic and that "steam" probably has a smell and that's why he know it's a fire and not steam. @FATMAC2 yeah I have two skis, and have never called anyone for help. The back compartments are water tight, if they go under when open they will fill the engine compartment with water and absolutely sink a ski. Go back and watch the video or at least do a little research before making dumb posts

Make sure you really want to own one and will ride it alot..... What happens with boats, jet skis and motorcycles is people buy them and ride them along at first, then you only take them out every now and then. Then you HAVE to take them out so they don't devolope problems from sitting.... Then it becomes a chore just maintaining it and having to take it out
And then you let it sit and it won't start or run after a while and you have to fix it
