- His Holiness the Dalai Lama gives a talk on The Need for Secular Ethics in the Modern Education System followed by a question and answer session by video link from his residence on August 25, 2020. The program is organized by Mind Mingle, an initiative to promote the concept of experiential learning methodology, purposeful education and understanding the unique passion and potential of each child.

We are so lucky to be living in a time when such a great being is so easily available to us.
With such beautiful ideas, how could the education systems continue to keep getting it all SO wrong?

Dalai Lama, you are so correct. Western civilization needs the Indian inner peace and knowledge. We need each other more than ever right now. I was searching for a deeper meaning into secular ethics for my college course this afternoon when I came across your video by accident. We are hurting over here more than anyone would ever have you know. Years of abuse, neglect, and societal pressures have caused massive amounts of mental health issues that transverse to physical issues later in life. I wish I could say that life is full of beauty in the US, but sadly I see too much pain in the eyes of those around me, and even in myself. I pray for a day in which humanity can heal one another without the fear of boundaries. For all that we really need to know, is that to see a face is to know that it is a face. Summary :- Modern education is too materialistic. People need the 1000 year old Indian tradition teachings. These are :-
'Ahimsa' = Not harming others.
'Karuna' = brings inner peace, inner strength and less fear or anxiety.
'Shamatha' = developing a calm, single-pointed mind.
'Vipassana' = Analytical meditation.
Modern education, which comes from the West, uses intellect to develop weapons etc, but it lacks moral principles or emotional knowledge.
Globally, there has been education of physical hygiene. Now we need hygiene of EMOTIONS.
India can combine modern education with it's traditional principles.
Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandella succeeded by following Gandhi's non-violent style, or philosophy.
HHDL My fist commitment is to try to persuade 7 billion people to try to be COMPASSIONATE.
By individually developing inner peace, regardless of being religious or not, together we all could really develop world peace.
Humans are social 'creatures' with a natural concern for community (natural compassion). Young children are raised by the kindness of their mothers, and they play without judging others. Then at school they are taught about racial and religious differences (us and them). Schools should teach the concept of 7 billion people on one earth, all being ONE. (All being the same, living side by side, peacefully).
H.H.D.L. My second commitment is, spreading the message of LOVING KINDNESS, regardless of religion. (RELIGIOUS HARMONY).
With that comes the concepts of forgiveness, tolerance, self-discipline and contentment.
All religions carry the same message of 'DEVELOP LOVING KINDNESS'. Understanding this brings religious harmony.
In India, for 1000 years, all different religions have lived together peacefully.
The Dalai Lama - My third commitment is to totally retire from political responsibility regarding the Tibetan [Chinese] issue from 2011.
Other democratically elected leaders from our Tibetan community here in India will take that responsibility.
Now my responsibility is to preserving the precious Tibetan culture and knowledge.
Tibetan Buddhism has a strong emphasis on 'reason' over 'faith'. This makes it compatible with modern science, resulting in a good combination. Modern science is showing a lot of interest in the Tibetan Buddhist concept of 'inter-dependency' etc.
Where the Chinese are exploiting Tibetan resources without regard for the ecology, I will endeavour to keep the plateau clean, and preserve the forests there. Tibet supplies many major rivers.
When I relocated to India as a refugee, I lost my country, but in another way, I found my guru's [Buddha's] original land.
I, and 10000 monks, are very grateful to India.
The Dalai Lama - My fourth commitment is the revival of ancient Indian knowledge in modern India.
India has the ability and the opportunity to combine modern education with it's ancient teachings about EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING.
The 'Emotional Well-being' classes should be taught as an academic subject, not as a religious subject. Not through prayer, and not through ritual, but as normal, secular education. It is about happiness. The religious side is a private concern.
Some scientists show that 'WARMHEARTEDNESS', through ahimsa and karuna is very beneficial to emotional and mental health.

I strongly disagree. I do not trust out teachers or government to know what it right from wrong, and i don't think it should be their responsibility to teach that to our children.
Parents need to step up and raise their own kids.

Family with healthy mindset can provide suitable environment for nurturing moral values in next generation. Then comes the role of commity around, school & teachers.
Least is expected from the governments except funding for establishments which do work related to morality building or correcting the defected morality.

In English, 'social animal' is a common phrase that describes people as being social, just like other social creatures in nature. Humans are part of nature too. That is why the word 'animal' or 'creature' is used. It points to the fact that the social quality in us is strongly part of our nature. It's not like a fashion or something. The phrase is not literal or degrading to humans.
