      Thanks for your great videos Warren! I heard some records with a double drum tracking (one panning left, the one on the right). Can you tell us a little bit more about these recording technics (phases issues....:))?

      Warren, I have a pretty bad version Meniere's Disease, an equilibrium disorder that progressively degrades hearing....
      So I struggle with both tracking and mixing..... everything is "in the box" on mixes.. .
      Even with "the cards being stacked against me", I don't imagine Living Without Being A Musician, A Songwriter, An Engineer(by necessity, fixed income).
      I know you arent a therapist, but is there anything in the way of advice you would give to a person that stubbornly "wont give up on their passion", even when the odds are totally against them ????
      Edit:
      If you wish to listen, the older vids on my channel are final mixes.....

      I came across someone on TH-cam who argued the SSL high pass filter, Desk & Plugins, has a cut off point higher than you dial in. Eg 80Hz would be around 120Hz. Any Thoughts?

      Hi Warren. What should be recorded first when approaching a new song? Should we start with the drums? Guitars over a click? Assuming there's no demo of the track.

    I appreciate how reasonable and sensible the discussion about guitar amps is.
    Absolutely, plug-ins are convenient and flexible but (personally) those aren't my priorities. Playing through my amp is just more tactile and way more satisfying. "Playing the amp" is part of the tone.

    Oh! I was so mad yesterday. I was painting a fence and came in for a break and there was no FAQ Friday. (I thought it was Friday). I got to thinking "oh well, maybe it turned out tot be too big a hassle to put one out this Friday" and I watched Pawn Stars (just the guitar ones) for an hour before going back to fence painting. So I'm writing this to express my sincerest apologies for sending out a faint expression of negativity that was due to my faulty perception of the 'day of the week. The intention of PLAP to put out a vibe of positivity and inclusiveness does not go unnoticed by this reader (watcher) and I appreciate that intention 'muchly'. I so enjoy the content and the visits with PLAP (Warren Huart) and guests. I assure everyone reading this that once I finish watching this episode I will be outside to put away all my painting tools and do some lawn mowing.
    (on my second break yesterday I did really enjoy the ELO stuff. Jeff Lynn ... what an amazing life time of achievements.)

    On the idea of using amp sims or analogue amps: Kohle touched on it a bit, that every experience is different. I may have my "go to" way of setting up the mics, and setting the amp etc, but it always ends up being a little bit different sounding and feeling each time. Plus, for me, the act of setting up my gear for tracking guitar is almost cathartic, it's a time I use to get myself into the headspace needed, I'm thinking about the track I'm going to play, just really gets me "in the zone" so to speak.
    I'm of a certain age, and started playing guitar at a certain time that I've been able to see the maturation process of amp/cab sims and its quite amazing how they've evolved over the years. The first time I plugged into a Headrush Pedalboard, they had models of the amp/cab/mic combination I was using at the time. I set it up and in 20 minutes I had essentially my studio tone coming out of a PA speaker. (far cry better than my Johnson J Station I had back in the day! haha) It was great. I gigged with the Headrush for a few years, even did some recording sessions with it and no one could tell it wasn't a real amp.
    So I have experience with both worlds. I'd say the main reason I USUALLY prefer to record analogue amps/pedals is that they are all different. When you plug into a Helix, Fractal, Neural DSP etc, and you set up a tube screamer into a a twin. You're plugging into the same tube screamer, and the same twin that every other person with that product has. The individuality begins to disappear. For live, my thought process is "who cares?" because 95% of people at a live show don't necessarily care HOW the tone is created, they just care that it's happening. The guitar nerds can come check out my board and have their thoughts if they want haha. But in the studio, when the goal is capture more than just the sound, but the vibe and the energy of the day, I find that using analogue amps tend to be more effective at this. That's not to say modelers aren't good, they are amazing. I'm actually in a band right now, we are tracking some songs and I'm using a combination of Neural DSP plugins, and analogue amps. There's no right or wrong, it all depends on the need and whats working for the track.
    Do I think that analogue amps will ever be completely erased from the professional studios though? I do think it's absolutely possible, I don't think it'll be any time soon. Everyone said big analogue consoles would never be omitted from professional studios, but they are not a necessity any more. But here's the deal, if quality music can be made without spending six figures on gear, then why would they continue to be needed? You can buy a Mesa Boogie JP2C head for $3500. (then you need a cab) It will eventually have mechanical issues, tubes will go out, and you'll never be completely done spending money on it. With the price of tubes these days, yikes! OR, you can buy his signature plugin from Neural DSP for like $150ish, and you're done. Of course it's not a model of his Boogie Amp, but if you're looking for his tones, they are in there. Maybe you need to buy a new version of it every year years, but its still a fraction of the cost of the tube amp.
    I think that in the future, for a vast majority of musicians the "Professional" studio will be used primarily for tracking live drums. Guitar, bass and vocals are easy enough to record at home or in a project studio for a fraction of the price. I started building my studio because we got quoted $10k for a week of tracking at a studio here in Seattle. We did one album there, it was great. But when it came time to record the next album, I decided to take that $10k and buy gear and make our own album on our time, I think that's going to be a much more common path in the future.

    I agree about the inspiration of real amps, cabs and mics in a good room. Players love it, you can get more inspired and unique performances, and I would even say better--with a good player. The furthest I go is running my tube amps into the UA OX for those times when I don't have access to a good room, because the character of the amp is still there. I've compared my '76 Marshall JMP 2203 and my '67 Deluxe reverb to digital equivalents and they just don't sound and FEEL right to me.
    +1,000,000 on the KHE Amp-Cab Selector! I have the KHE 4x4 in my amp rack and it is probably the best thing I have ever purchased for guitar recording. Having the ability to switch amp and cab combinations in real time, without having to re-cable anything, is a massive time-saver and lets me focus on getting the right sound for the song.

    The idea of capturing authentic room sound for drum samples is legend! I've heard about that being done with synthesizers too, to bring some air and acoustics to an essentially digital sound.
    Amp sims are getting really amazing, but there is a special tone, a vibe and an edge that real amps deliver. That said, not everyone has the available space and layering more than one sim can fatten it up.

    To the question on MIDI-based drum samples, I have found great success in a multitude of tricks. In your sequencer/DAW, there should be a set of controls for the MIDI note parameters like velocity, but there should also be controls for things like fine pitch, cutoff/resonance, nudge controls to push notes forward or behind on the grid, stuff like that.
    Of course, it is important to randomize velocity (within a reasonable range - not too much) but it can also help to randomize fine pitch (again, not by much, maybe 10-12 cents max - just until it's barely noticeable, then back off a tiny bit) AND the cutoff and resonance (again, not too much).
    Randomizing these parameters can kind of help give the impression of the drum sticks hitting the head not EXACTLY in the same spot or with the same intensity every time, and A/B-ing between the before and after really helps make this stick out. Additionally, you can randomly nudge notes ahead or behind on the grid, by a couple samples here and there. Nothing too crazy, you still generally want a tight groove, though this can vary depending on genre and style.
    Hopefully somebody finds this info useful!

    Haven’t miked a guitar cab in years. Been using multiple guitar interface combos to get some great sounds with the added benefit of having a quieter studio space for live tracking guitar and vocals at the same time. Totally isolated guitar tracks and just a smidge of string noise makes for super easy live tracking/mixing. But still can’t being myself to migrate from real drums to virtual/electronic. Although, I will lay in some supporting samples on kick, snare and such.

    I can't use my real amp anymore since I moved and so I only use amp sims. They suck to play, but are really good to record.
    For me something awesome about it which help me a lot was the ability to find the perfect tone for my songs while hearing it, not playing it. Record a di track on top of everything else, throw in you amp sim, and set your tone there. You find the setting that will suite the song and the whole band a lot easier.
    Then, the most crucial step for me was getting a midi controller. It's so much more natural for me to turn physical buttons, and you're a lot more precise, you really hear that "I got too far just right here" moment.
    Also, amp sims sound good clean with real pedals in front of it, with the output level fairly low, just before that huge bump in volume that makes them sound awesome in front of a real amp.
    With that say, you still always have to eq them quite heavily afterward,a huge low cut and a hi low cut, and usually a bad resonance in the hi mods from my experience.
    Something I found worked really well also was using two amps (Sim) and sum them in mono. Like, I currently use my telecaster with a Hiwatt and an AC30 simulations, pan them hard left and hard right, set the levels right, and then mono the whole thing.
    Anyway, it took me a lot of time to accept the fact I will not play nor record my tube Hiwatt anytime soon, even more to learn how to make my guitars sound nice with amp sims, it's a lot more work, but in the end I feel like for a clean sounding recording it's the way to go, at least for me.

      I'm not real familiar with the amp sim you mention, or the sound you're trying to achieve, but most of the ones I've used from neural DSP have sounded great with not much work at all. Maybe get yourself a couple of new ir's and see if it meets your needs?

    • @prinsezkaffeehexen8196
      @prinsezkaffeehexen8196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Spoofaged I tried the Neuron DSP ones and really didn't like them, but I guess I'm 1) too used to what I've been using for the past decade (which is amplitube and sometimes it's own impulse responses, sometimes other ones) and 2) not in the right kind of music for them (I mostly play Sonic Youth/My Bloody Valentine/80's hardcore/Name your favorite hipster band kind of music, and I even with the Cory Wing one I didn't get the right sound, at least not the one I'm looking for)
      Also, I'm clearly a subject of this very dramatic sickness that I call "let's tweak everything endlessly so you feel like a producer but never finish anything syndrome" haha If I spent more time playing/recording and less tweaking things no one hears I'd probably have 25 insane sounding albums out, and a few million bucks in my bank account. But tweaking this ten years old demo forever is a lot more fun I guess

    • @Spoofaged
      @Spoofaged 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prinsezkaffeehexen8196 hey man, I understand the tweakery nonsense all too well lol. I have a 5153 and into heavier late 80s-00s vibes so a lot of the amp sims are kinda tailored to me out of the box but I still tweak endlessly, swap amp sims, mix in the live rig (it's so damn loud tho lol), swap ir's, blend ir's.
      Maybe if you try a couple of amp sims and blend them together instead of trying to rely on one to get to your holy grail tone?
      Also, there's an old saying "if you're not moving forward, you'll never get anywhere" lol. Perhaps force dive into a different direction. Lay down some new riffs, and write around them and take breaks. Find some already complete multi tracks and try tweaking sims on those just to get yourself out of your own head for a bit then dive back into your stuff.
      And I feel you on feeling more like a producer than a musician lol. I started my journey with a whole life's soundtrack in my head and ended up spending way more time engineering more than laying down what used to flood my head. I can't even hear music the same way before I started anymore. But I've come to terms with it and am ok. I never started with a get rich mindset, I just wanted to record some riffs and play around but it became a full time hobby.. kinda forced myself to take a break and enjoy some new music from other artists but I'll jump back in when the juice starts flowing like it used to.
      Also, if you don't already, make your friends listen to it and get feedback. What it sounds like to others might change your thoughts. Some tones I get in like ugh, then my friends are like "wtf is wrong with you, that sounds heavy af". Just my ears get burned on whatever I'm working and tweaking and won't hear things the same way after hours, days, years of pounding a track into your ear drums lol.
      I dig nameless, and it's heavy af but it also blends really good with other sims. Even if you're not looking for face melting rage, run the gain lower on it, and blend it in with a sim you have that you're used to. I'm pretty much a wall talking to a wall it sounds like haha but good luck my friend. In the words of Jim Morrison "break on through"! Perhaps our children will release our albums after we're gone and find the peace we struggle to 😂

    I was once talking to the guitarist of my band who used to use an axe FX 2 with a vox ac30 and still used some pedals here and there. I asked him why he didn't went for the amp Sims in his axe thing. And he came up with a simple answer: it misses rock and roll. It is just too clean, too smooth no crackling here and there and it just sounds boring. And I loved this answer! Because he was so much right with it.
    Since then I started playing my Bass through a guitar tube amp and it sounded just right for the band

    Awesome FAQ Friday!
    WIth a 2 year old daughter downstairs I'm not able to use my tube amps anymore for recording at home. I use the Audient Sono (with pedals), some nice cab sims in the two-notes software and record the DI track as well as the "Mic" sound that inspired me the most at the moment. Sometimes I do use my tube pre-amps. I plug in the Fx send from the amp to the Audient Sono and select a cab. This way I do get my amp sound a bit more than only using the Sono and some pedals.
    I also do think real amps are way more inspiring, the sound in the room (instead of the headphones) the volume etc... it makes you play different.

    Great video and discussion, and as others have said, Kristian (like your good self!) is a fantastic teacher. I've never really been able to get on with any amp sim or modeller, whether it's the PRS sims, Amplitube, Bias, Line 6 or any of them - they've never really given me the sound I want, and there's always a trade-off for the convenience. I got myself a Two Notes Reload box for a real guitar head and created my own IRs using a Fender 2x12 cab loaded with V30's. Then I also got an Engl (German engineering!) preamp and use it with the free TPA-1 power amp plugin with my IRs. The sweet thing about the TPA-1 plugin is that it's completely free but gives you a choice of tube models - it even has controls for sag. The Engl with that gives me just about all the sounds I want - well worth looking at!

    Real tube amp is so many variable function as a system, that you cannot express it mathematically fully (to model it that is). Modelling can, however, get pretty close and actually one cannot tell which is which in blind tests. As mentioned, it has many convenience aspects to it: home recording, live situations (w other noise, minor nuances will anyway be hidden), etc. I use real amps at home, but a IR loadbox after the amp, even though I prefer miking at professional studio setting. The resonance circuit between the guitar mic and the first stage of the amp, how different preamp settings affect the sound, how the power amp responds when it's loaded, its push, etc. all are just examples of the variable space when you are dialing a sound that make huge difference. For a particular song I may want to choose between the high end "buzz" or the "roundness" of power amp loading that you get by dialing the real system - a model is just a snapshot (even though you can eq it, but it is just an eq). Also to find a complementing sounds, if gtrs are doubled, will also result in more enjoyable results w real amps because of the aforementioned examples. Then ofc. the feel when playing: you can notice the feel change when playing for ex. if the amp is in lower vol and when you push both pre and power amp - that in turn translates to your performance i.e. to the m.u.s.i.c! I have never ever gotten the same w modellers.

    I have been mixing Rock, reggae. pop, world, prog, folk and everything in between, for live, recordings, television and so on for years. And, I don't know if it was a 50 year crisis or what. But i wanted to go back where I started and that was metal, or Thrash metal at the time. I'm always been a metal fan, bot have not worked in that area, there's been others that have been way better that took care of metal bands. Well, I started my own metal project, just to get back to my roots, and learn how to mix metal. And man that was hard! Everything i knew didn't fit. And i couldn't match my referenses, not even get close. Harsh, cymbal, guitars all over the place but you couldn't actually hear them... . When I started out, I recorded to an fostex 8 track and got pretty decent results, for the time and equipment I had. But now... I got all the eqipment in the world, but can't get a decent metal mix. I knowthe basics, you dont need to repeat them, i have devoured, Kristians channel, and Frickers channel for tips,and it's become better but why doesn't it sound like Prong or Carcass! :P :D

    Nice video guys. That amp subject is a touchy one. Everyone seems to have their view. I love a good tube amp turned to the sweet spot like pretty much every player does, just don't have that luxury for my personal home studio. I am working on my own original music as an artist, still very much learning the recording side and the best tools I've found so far for good overall tones for my guitar playing is my Fractal FM3 and Overlouds TH-U sims.
    They work very well, and I think for the many artists in the same spot it will take away from future tube amp purchases. What you both are saying makes good sense though as always. I am looking to be able to have more options on it in the future, but I know still prefer to commit to using the tones I've set up now and equipment for this album I'm working on and then do something different for the next.

    The guitar stuff was on point! I will say, real amps are never gonna go away as long as there is feedback. Even before the point of proper feedback into harmonics, having the guitar in the same room as a loud amp does something to the sustain. Until someone can model THAT, amps aren't going away 🤘

    About the comparison between Amp sim vs Real amps mic-ed : My Laney GH100TI needs to be retubed but the tech that takes care of it can't take a look at it before several weeks, so I had to take a vst as I don't have spare amps, I took Amplitube 5, Silver Jubilee amp, with a TubeScreamer Boost, several Speakers choices, a tight room, etc ... like close sounding settings to those of my GH100TI, the vst sounds good, but hell, it's still far from being as dynamic in my recordings, and even worse by monitoring it. And when I record my GH100TI (Where I need to thank Kristian for his video on Speaker comparisons, I ended choosing mines thanks to his video, Jensen Tornado Stealth 65 + WGS Reaper HP, this blend is insane), I only use an E906 paired with a Superlux R102 Ribbon mic, with a 70's Yamaha RM804 console plugged into a fairly old ECHO Firewire 12 Converter. So imagine with a 1073, API, SSL, Cranborne Audio mic pre plugged into a cristal clear RME converter... In my opinion nothing will replace the real thing.

    Amp sims are certainly convenient, but I’ve only ever tried using them for songs where the guitar is more of background texture than a focal instrument. Particularly when my wife isn’t home, I can get guitar sounds I like with just an SM57 miking my amp, with the amp at bar gig volume.

    I go into a strymon riverside then an Boss RE 20...from mono and out into stereo.
    It sounds...pretty good.
    Way better than most freinds that can't mic up, drive the speakers and have bad mics.

    My understanding, regarding tube amps, is there is a tube shortage. A couple of tube manufacturers in China have shut down production. Other than the music amp business there are not a lot of other uses for tubes, the market is shrinking, TVs, Radios, etc haven't used tubes within circuits in decades. When the Cathode Ray Tube in TVs and Computers was replaced with digital screens the tube manufacturing plants took a huge hit. I suspect the reason the tube amp market has exploded in the last couple of years is the "buy them while you can strategy".

    • @yanossnicklefritz7064
      @yanossnicklefritz7064 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's the same case for tube production also I think. Buy them while you can. I just recently made sure I had enough for my Mesa which is my main amp, for a long time. Sorry to get dark, but as a former soldier besides a musician and someone who has watched and studied the growing situation, that looks to be coming to a point, but almost all the tube production could be effected.
      We are heading straight on into WWIII with the direction the politicians are steering us. If war breaks out in Europe, JJ tubes could likely be down completely or long term disrupted. If China attacks Taiwan, any tubes from there won't be on the market, and Russian tubes are already disrupted. Even if the Russian tried to sell through China, once the Taiwan attack occurs, which seems very close, that window would be closed. They flew a large 30 plane mission the other day. The smartest thing is get them now to me. Or you won't be getting them.

      @yanossnicklefritz7064 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PlatinumBlack90038 Well technically yes. But we have a lot of restrictions and regulations on manufacturing and pollution than other countries do. Which is why most of that manufacturing of tubes is in particular countries now from my knowledge on it. If they are to be manufactured here the cost of doing so with the final cost to the consumer, is likely to be much more than what players are used to paying. And Americans tend to search for low prices and will buy where the lower price is regardless of whether it's an American product or not. If there is no other choice, than they have to. But this is still where I am suggesting to get them now.
      As I am an American, I can't say how exactly I might understand it to be in England. I have never been there. But I'm sure Celestion didn't start making some of their speakers and parts in China for no reason. All this is speculation though and the situation is the same. If you or someone else doesn't want to buy what they can now, that's yours and their choice. Also when the war kicks off no one may be manufacturing anything or if they are it could basically be war focused for the most part, same as in the 1940's. I've made my choice and am squared away on what I will need for a long term to feed my tube amps. What anyone else does is on them, but I decided to post on it for those who might care.

    the main reason why I will keep using real amps is commitment. Dial in a tone and move on. It keeps you from procrastinating and it will sound more true.
    I mean of course you can do the same with digital amps. You could dial it in like a real amp and then print the tracks so there is no going back. But let's be honest here. Who really does that?
    Also Warren saying "tot ziens" is wuite wholesome.

    Hi, first i really enjoy your videos. I have been in and out of the music industry for a long time, this is a comment on amps and effects. Every year or two someone comes out with a "revolutionary" new system. All the guitar players go out and buy the new system and for a while they love it. its different, convenient, light, digital etc... then maybe 6 months go by and guess what?? they are back with their old rig, big heavy amps 4x12 cabs, analog effects, cables everywhere and i ask what happened??? They always tell me that it is just not as good. Then another year goes by and the next big thing comes out and it happens again. Some things just cannot be improved upon. There is a trade off with everything. If convenience is more important to you the the sound of your rig then you might stick with your kemper or axe fx rig but you are giving up something when you do so. Myself, i am a purist. A tube amp with a guitar in front and fx in a loop will always "Sound" better, it just does.!!!!! Rock on guys !!!!

    The modern cabinet simulating IR/etc. boxes like the Captor and the UAD OX are a really great middle ground between the analog and digital worlds, and I love them, but I do generally prefer working with mic’d speakers. There’s still something about the digital stuff where it can sound phenomenal on a track or two, but just doesn’t quite stack up the same way in the mix, and tends to be missing some natural “fullness” for me. It’s a great time to make music though, because we’ve got all the options!

    Regarding summing multiple mics in a single guitar cab then doubling on the other side for L/R, would you use this approach for multiple snare mics as well? Even if you use two times the same type of mik (sm57) and the same type of speaker (V30) - but a different one(!) e.g. the opposite side of the box- but same (mirrored) placemen and pan them hard left and right, you can get a kind of stereo effect. I've played a lot of amp sims and they have two main problems 1) They are universally fizzy, nothing clips like a valve 2) Electric guitar is a combination of the guitar and the amp. Your guitar is resonating at some level all the way up to feedback with the sound from the amp. Your guitar will never 'sing' with an amp sim in the box. If you plug an amp sim into a cab then just use a valve amp in the first place. 1) is I admit maybe a matter of opinion but my ears are good. 2) is just pure physics

    It's about commitment. If you can change your guitar tone by one click you lose the feel you had, while playing with a certain sound. If you would play the same part with another amp, you probably would play different. It is sad to see that artificial sources are used especially in metal production. Putting everything on the grid and sucking the life of the perfomances.
