I saw the old Homestead and faces I loved I saw England's valleys and Dales I listened with joy as I did when a boy to the sound of the old village bells. The log was burning brightly, twas a night that should banish all sins? because the bells were ringing the old year out and the New Year in. That is what we sang at school to a song entitled The Miners Dream of Home. He was in the Trenches of the Great War. That is what I was expecting here. Did our music teacher get it wrong or is there two versions?
Often traditional songs have no single tune, and in this case I am aware of at least one other tune. Also Kate sometimes sings trad songs to new melodies.
I've just re-read your post, and I can see that you also mention somewhat different lyrics. Again, I think trad songs often have regional, national or temporal variations.
what can lovers of folk music of England do to spread such poignant songs? Every time one clicks/types English folk music up comes everything starting from Irish, American, a few Scottish, but so very few songs of England.
AS EVER ... THANK YOU SO MUCH DEAR KATE, AND ALL WONDERFUL MUSICIANS !!! 🙏💖💐💔
This is March, 2024, and I only just discovered this gem, Thank you Kate. Love you.
So beautifully sung. Kate is a brilliant performer😀
We tried for years to find this for my mother pre social media x can't believe I ve found it at last too late for her but so glad to hear it xx
This is the best song from her sweet bells album. Just so beautiful. Her voice is just so evocative and captures the sentiment of the song. Love it
How sad, that such a beautiful song has so few views.
Seems like this generation doesn’t care much for beauty…?
my god how beautiful
I love you Kate.❤️

Gotta say, though, Kate's version is so much more beautiful.
