Hey guys, fun fact... the intro, outro, and transitions are me grooving over a loop with the Phosphor Bronze model. Sounds pretty killin if you ask me!
No no. 1) use only the camera mic 2) at least 5 mins of talking before even showing the snare 3) slight tapping on the edge of the head with the snares off for a solid 2-3 minutes to begin with 4) just one bad tuning.
Phosphor bronze sounded great at each tension. Great video, Austin! Loved the quick cut comparisons. Thank you for making a great demo of these drums. Top notch as always.
Pearl is underrated because very popular , their 14"/5" is one of the best sounding snare of all , (the reference serie and aluminium snare is amazing too !)
Well, I dropped enough hints that my wife got the Phosphor bronze for me this Christmas. This snare is GOLD. Im not exaggerating when I say I found the snare sound that's been in my head for a long time. Thanks for turning me to it!
Probably the best snare drum review video I've ever seen. Thanks for taking the time to do it right. In different applications they'd all sound amazing but #1 was the 15" med and high for sure then the bronze. One comment would be to not have transition music between the different drums even though I love the intro/outro music. When I'm listening to the different drums I'm trying to keep the sound of the last one in mind, and often times listen with my eyes closed so I can compare and then the music starts with a different snare sound so it kind of erases the memory of the last drum. I could be the only that cares or listens like this so it's obviously not a big deal. Awesome video either way! Thanks
I thought the mahogany tuned high sounded the best. It had as much snap as the 14's but with a warmth the smaller drums didnt get. That would be fire in a mix (to me, anyway). Makes me want to go spend some money.
At high tunings, all sound pretty good, nice 'n funky. The brass has more cut than the bronze, maybe a tad too much for some genres of music. The mahogany is the "softest" of them which should make it a good option e.g. for singer-songwriter stuff. Going down the tuning range, the bronze is somehow ahead of the competition. It sounds a tad more controlled and warmer. Interesting snare. The maple has no real strengths, nor weaknesses. Solid allrounder-workhorse IMHO. Great compare-video btw. I wish more people would do their snaredrum compares the way you did. Outstanding job.
Thank you. Great video, especially with the quick cuts. Makes comparing between the different models so much easier in this virtual world. I really like the Mahogany 15x5.
By far the best shootout I have ever seen. Great sound, tuning and of course performance. I actually needed this badly. The phosphorus Bronze is the one that I would go for. They all sound awesome. Also I was never a 14x5 guy, but this changed my views. Thanks for all your creative efforts.
My favorite finish is the premium brass, but overall, I gotta give it to the phosphor bronze! That thing sounded fantastic!! I did love the low tuning of the mahogany. Had a big Zeppelin vibe to it!!
Pearl makes some awesome drums. This video is no exception! ! I had a steel shell sensitone I found in peices at a drum shop. I bought it , and the necessary parts to rebuild it. Three days later it was up and playing. I used it for credit towards a kit I've been wanting to get a week later. I miss it a little. Lol
I have the Phosphor Bronze model, and have gigged with it for some time now. It’s easily my favorite snare drum that I’ve ever owned. Extremely articulate and sounds amazing with a live band.
Thank you for a fantastic demo ! I actually just bought the phosphor bronze model; tomorrow is my birthday and I get to open the box. After watching this I’m 100% convinced that I made the right choice !
Great comparison! Thank you for playing the same groove every time and same velocities. It really help in hearing the differences. The quick cuts really did too. 👍👍
They all sound great. I love how warm wooden snares are, but man you just can't beat the CRACK of a well-made metal snare. I have a Tama SLP super Aluminum and I absolutely love it. These snares are all amazing. Pearl did a great job with them.
The bronze and mahogany sounded more deep on the highs' to me. Then on high they all sound pretty snappy-high, but a slight difference., which is surprising, metal isn't much louder to ears. Brass does have a ring, they all sound like studio quality ! It really makes me rethink what I need out of snare if buying one, they all are so unique in sound, but maple always wins.
They all sound good and have different characteristics at the different tunings. But I like the 15 x 5.....there's something about that snare that was different. Wonder if it's challenging to get 15" heads for it?
Great video and super playing, you make them all sound good. Love all your videos, very informative, well made and well presented, impeccable playing. Well done.
Thanks fo the video, nicely done. All great drums at a VERY AFFORDABLE PRICE RANGE. Been a fan of pearl snares and own a reference kit. There fantastic drums, and the QUALITY is top notch.
Hi Austin! Bronze phosphor all the way! Sounds killing in any given tuning! #2 would be the Mahogany...must be great for recording for sure! Maple is blah...nothing to right home about. The brass one sounded too thin to my ears. Cheers from Brazil!
All of them sound incredibly sexy in the HIGH tuning for sure but, That Phosphor Bronze and Premium Maple have the sweetest slap from all 4. Great vid Austin, thanks for the comparison!
Nice video. They are all lovely, The 15" is interesting, lacking a wee bit of articulation in the lower range perhaps. The Brass is superb, Followed by Bronze, The 15" Mahogany & Lastly The Maple. Thanks
This video stuck with me so badly after the first time seeing it, it made me purchase a bronze sensitone a few weeks ago. I had to have it when I saw it was for sale
I’m gonna have to go with medium tune *Mahogany!* I also appreciate the editing, you actually get to hear the musicality and tonality of each drum in the context. But yeah, that Mahogany sounds nice, crispy and warm.
Great video! Was wondering if you could share the pitches of the tunings for top and bottom heads, especially of the medium tension.Wires seem to bee on the loose side if I'm correct? Just enough to let them sing but not so much as to choke the drum?
I commented on the previous video that I want the phosphor bronze so bad, but after watching this I have to say that I want that phosphor bronze so fkn bad. Did you have any preferences between them? Differences in which one you'd prefer for recording vs. just playing on your own or anything like that?
This is really awesome video!!! DId you mess with tunning with bottom head every time you changed the pitch on the top? if so , how did you changed it? Thanks an advance.
Great video Austin. Is there any specific trick with the tuning because i can't hear too much ring and i really like the sound you get from them. Thanks
Low and medium tunings (and all around fave): Phosphor Bronze. High tuning: Maple. The Mahogany was a nice all-rounder and my second favorite. I couldn't get into the brass.
Nice Video Austin, The Bronze Sounded Unreal, Just Crisp Beautiful. Next I'd Give It To The Maple, Very Classic Tones. The Brass Comes In Third For Me, Followed By The Mahogany.
Easily the Maple. I have a Sonor chrome shell already..and in the market for a wood shell snare. I still love the free floating snares too. And I tried an aluminium free floater in a shop in Berlin. Soooo responsive, yet warm But for wood....this maple sensi tone is the winner for me. Good attack, warm tones, good fundamental, rich in colour.
Hey guys, fun fact... the intro, outro, and transitions are me grooving over a loop with the Phosphor Bronze model. Sounds pretty killin if you ask me!
This shootout is awesome and very well done! Definitely feeling the Phosphor Bronze after this...
Can somebody tell me what head is he using on this comparison and all the other videos ?
@pop Gamer
Steel is probably the loudest for rock music.
Gretsch Brooklyn Chrome Over Steel is very good for that.
I agree
Sounds amazing Austin.
Dear everyone that's going to make a drum shoot-out youtube video... This video right here is your template on how to do it right.
No no. 1) use only the camera mic 2) at least 5 mins of talking before even showing the snare 3) slight tapping on the edge of the head with the snares off for a solid 2-3 minutes to begin with 4) just one bad tuning.
No doubt
bronze 0:45 - 1:07 - 1:30
brass 1:59 - 2:21 - 2:44
maple 3:13 - 3:36 - 3:59
mahogany 4:28 - 4:50 - 5:14
Phosphor bronze sounded great at each tension. Great video, Austin! Loved the quick cut comparisons. Thank you for making a great demo of these drums. Top notch as always.
still rocking the 1st edt. of that snare.. sounds even better than this newer version :-)
I put my headphones on for this. Man this was like snare ASMR. I felt chills when it went to the medium tunings.
Autonomous Snare Meridian Response
Production is off the charts... they all sounded good!
Agreed I love them all in all the tunings given.
Pearl is underrated because very popular , their 14"/5" is one of the best sounding snare of all , (the reference serie and aluminium snare is amazing too !)
Phosphor bronze at low tuning was incredible. Your mixes are killer, too
Well, I dropped enough hints that my wife got the Phosphor bronze for me this Christmas. This snare is GOLD. Im not exaggerating when I say I found the snare sound that's been in my head for a long time. Thanks for turning me to it!
Nice!👌🏼
Yeah they all sound good but that was my fav

That bronze sounds amazing, and the 15" Mahogany
That's why I own both!
The consensus around the bronze confirms my impulse buy yesterday, moments after I heard it. It fills a sonic niche none of my other snares occupied.
All of them sound great at medium tuning
quite possibly the best produced snare comparison vid around. thank you for doing this!
I thought the mahogany tuned high sounded the best. It had as much snap as the 14's but with a warmth the smaller drums didnt get. That would be fire in a mix (to me, anyway). Makes me want to go spend some money.

The brass has such cutting power and bit of ring ,a little moon gel will do justice!
Excelent job Austin, the quick cuts delivered a true comparison! By the way i love the Brass!
I have the Phosphor Bronze model, and have gigged with it for some time now. It’s easily my favorite snare drum that I’ve ever owned. Extremely articulate and sounds amazing with a live band.
My vote is for the Premium Beaded Brass. Great comparison vid!
Thank you for a fantastic demo ! I actually just bought the phosphor bronze model; tomorrow is my birthday and I get to open the box. After watching this I’m 100% convinced that I made the right choice !
Brass and Maple catch my ear. Nice Demo. Thanks for not just pounding time with back beat rim shots like other demos.
Well done man. The summary comparisons are an added value to this review. The African mahogany drum has a vibe of its own.
I just dreamed about this bronze sound, now it’s 5am and I’m watching it again! Hahaha I swear! I need this snare!
The snares are great. Your ideas + techniques about making these videos are phenomenal. Thank you.
Thanks for all your insight /transcriptions and everything else you give the drum community .........your the best !!!!
Awsome audio, perfect editing, very good skills.
Just a great video.
Great comparison! Thank you for playing the same groove every time and same velocities. It really help in hearing the differences. The quick cuts really did too. 👍👍
Wow! I love sensitone snares! Great video!!!
That bronze snare sound sick! And awesome groove!
Really well done. ALUMINUM model?
This really is a phenomenal and helpful comparison video man, thank you for taking the time to do it properly!
Agreed, love the bronze sound all around. Excellent comparison technique! Please do with Ludwig snares.
Mahogany medium tuned is awesome. Thanks for the video.
Love the BRONZE.
I use it a lot and bought it after seeing this video..
It’s not as loud as the Tama SLP Dynamic Bronze snare, which I have as well ..
Ok the bronze one sounds just amazing. I've been drooling over that for a while and this video didn't help! Good format, keep up the good work.
They all sound great. I love how warm wooden snares are, but man you just can't beat the CRACK of a well-made metal snare. I have a Tama SLP super Aluminum and I absolutely love it. These snares are all amazing. Pearl did a great job with them.
I was getting to drum on my Pearl maple picolo when I got this video notification. Wow! Excellent sound and video. Thank you.
I have the Beaded Phospor in 6,5 depth, really love it
The bronze and mahogany sounded more deep on the highs' to me. Then on high they all sound pretty snappy-high, but a slight difference., which is surprising, metal isn't much louder to ears. Brass does have a ring, they all sound like studio quality ! It really makes me rethink what I need out of snare if buying one, they all are so unique in sound, but maple always wins.
Phosphor bronze low tuning = MONEY
Instantly gave me the desire to want to buy one, sounded amazing.
Agreed. That was by far the best any of these snares sounded in the video. Far and away.
I agree. Its fat and complex at the same time ... love it!
They are all AMAZING. But I honestly loved the Maple one the most
Great video! Medium is the key here. All shells sound the best there.
Always top notch all around Austin! Loved the bronze and mahogany.
Awesome comparison video! All of them sound sooooooo good. Incredibly musical drums
The Beaded Phospo Bronze was my favorite. A really good phat metal sound and a nice overtone range at all 3 tensions.
all gorgeous sounding drums. i liked the phosphorous bronze best in all tunings. nice job!
The best snare drums from Low, Medium, High tuning tips 🎶❤️❤️❤️ I’m a Brass and Maple player, Thanks for the great video shootout !
Oh man that phosphor bronze slaps!
15x5 Mahogany was definitely most appealing to me. I've always preferred wood snares over metal though.
Your mix is very very clear and good...
They all sound good and have different characteristics at the different tunings. But I like the 15 x 5.....there's something about that snare that was different. Wonder if it's challenging to get 15" heads for it?
easily found online, just not as many snareside options in thicknesses usually
Great video! Bronze the best for me
Wooooo weeee! That Phosphor Bronze is givin' me the goose pimps! A clear winner in my opinion!
Great video and super playing, you make them all sound good. Love all your videos, very informative, well made and well presented, impeccable playing. Well done.
1st and 2nd ,in my opinion, is the bests
Why not the aluminum? By the way, the bassdrum sounds awesome, what brand and model is it?
I really enjoyed how they all sounded to me. Great video!
Love the look of beaded brass, but the bronze sounds great to me.
Great Sounds, Great Play
One of each will be fine thanks! they all sounded great. Excellent production of the subject thank you! Great Vid!
how comparisons should be done!! a+! i like the phosper bronze. good ring tone. nice crack.
Thanks fo the video, nicely done. All great drums at a VERY AFFORDABLE PRICE RANGE. Been a fan of pearl snares and own a reference kit. There fantastic drums, and the QUALITY is top notch.
Thanks for the video, good production. I like all, but brass sounds best for me
Hi Austin!
Bronze phosphor all the way!
Sounds killing in any given tuning!
#2 would be the Mahogany...must be great for recording for sure!
Maple is blah...nothing to right home about.
The brass one sounded too thin to my ears.
Cheers from Brazil!
Mahogany med tuning, for sure!
Love your channel!!! Great video!! Nice playing as always! Bronze sounds class.
Totally forgot about this video until I bought the mahogany, can’t wait to play it!
Nicely done Austin!
All of them sound incredibly sexy in the HIGH tuning for sure but,
That Phosphor Bronze and Premium Maple have the sweetest slap from all 4.
Great vid Austin, thanks for the comparison!
I want them all! But if I had to pick 1, that pospher bronze is money fo sho! 😍
I had to have it when I saw it was for sale
what a fantastic shootout. Thanks!
All the drums sound great, but I gotta say the Phosphor Bronze is my fav.
The phosphor bronze is, by far, the best one !
I’m gonna have to go with medium tune *Mahogany!*
I also appreciate the editing, you actually get to hear the musicality and tonality of each drum in the context.
But yeah, that Mahogany sounds nice, crispy and warm.
nice tuning - can you share the tension for batter and reso head
Great video! Was wondering if you could share the pitches of the tunings for top and bottom heads, especially of the medium tension.Wires seem to bee on the loose side if I'm correct? Just enough to let them sing but not so much as to choke the drum?
Así deben ser los videos comparativos! Hechos por alguien que tenga buena técnica y buen sonido! De gran ayuda! Saludos desde México!
I commented on the previous video that I want the phosphor bronze so bad, but after watching this I have to say that I want that phosphor bronze so fkn bad.
Did you have any preferences between them? Differences in which one you'd prefer for recording vs. just playing on your own or anything like that?
qlqnen I dig the Bronze for sure 🔥
the premium maple really sound good
This is really awesome video!!! DId you mess with tunning with bottom head every time you changed the pitch on the top? if so , how did you changed it? Thanks an advance.
Great video Austin. Is there any specific trick with the tuning because i can't hear too much ring and i really like the sound you get from them. Thanks
I like the little tune you have playing in between everything, what's it called?
tq so much for this record for this snare...i think i love sounf of firts dan mohagani
that bronze sounds soooo good..

Awesome work on ur videos thank you!
You have a really funky left hand grip! (Not saying that’s bad, but I wonder if it doesn’t limit the ability to play with your fingers)
Best comparison vid Eva. Thanks. I love the brass finish and sound. I've always loved the sound of maple. How deep is that African wood.
Cheers again.
fantastic snares
Loved the bronze! Hated the brass with that high pitch ring on the high tuning.
1. Phosphor Bronze
2a. 15" mahogany
2b. Brass
3. Maple
Excellent video, this is how comparison videos are done!!
P.s. Get new sticks, mate!
