    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

    Those are some lovely agates Rob and you did a great job with the cuts. It's easy to fall in love with those latter slabs but I'm kind of a sucker for those druzy vugs at 5:45. They may be lower quality in terms of the banding and colours but still beautiful rocks with a glint in their eye.

      I should try to get one of those vugs in a cab. I have never done a cab like that, but it would be fun to try.

      It depends if my son ever tells me what shape he wants. He didn't want something girly, so I asked him to sketch something for me. I just reminded him the other day, so maybe.

    • @MichiganRocks

      Not really. I have several saws, but they're all old and no longer being produced. I bought all of my saws used and I'm pretty sure some are older than I am. I have two slab saws now, a Lortone LS-10 and an older Lortone ST-10. Both are ten inch saws that I like a lot.

    Nice to see this. So do you now make a cab-shaped template/window that you overlay on each slab to find the best pattern or side?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's the next step. I have several cab templates that I have bought and then some of my own shapes (crosses, Christmas ornament, etc.) that I have made. My son asked me to make something for him, but doesn't want something that looks like it was made for a woman. He had an idea for a shape, so I asked him to draw it out for me in his CAD program. He's in college to be an engineer. So far I haven't gotten a pattern from him, so I don't know when I'll be making a pendant.

    Beautiful slabs!
    I'm looking at getting a tile saw to cut some slabs and break up larger rocks. In your experience what's the benefits of this kind of saw over the tile saws you can get. Is it mostly that it does a lot of the work for you, or is it also good for other reasons too? I'm not looking to get anything of this caliber anytime soon since it's so expensive, so don't feel as if you're influencing my decisions. I've just always been curious. Thanks!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought this saw used for $400. It's probably from the 70's. I can put a rock in the vice and come back a half hour later (depending on rock size) and the saw has cut through one time. I then turn a little crank to move the vice over and cut the next slab. The cuts are perfectly parallel, which I can't do as well by hand. I have never had a tile saw, but from what I hear, they get you very wet when you use them. I was cutting rocks in my garage today, which I wouldn't have been able to do with a saw that soaks me. I think tile saws come with thicker blades too, which wastes more rock. I believe the blade can be replaced with a lapidary blade, so that may not be a big issue.

    • @chandlerklein9950
      @chandlerklein9950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichiganRocks You make a good point about getting everything wet, and also about the blade size. Thank you for this! I've got a better idea on what things to look into before I make any decisions.
