I think it’s very much like young Jamaicans and roots reggae. They don’t appreciate the classics thinking that’s “old school “. All they want is the new stuff, be it dance hall or soca!
I am Trinidadian and I can tell you in my generation this is not only deeply appreciated but it is part of our DNA. It would be very difficult to to explain how much quintessentially Trini this outlook on Life is even among the young people who have seemed to be in a different headspace. It is very much in the way a Trinidadian enjoys the world.
I'm french and i listen to calypso ,mento, socca, gombay, zouk, ska, reggae( and many dubs or Dub) Antilles /Caraïbes/west indies are/ IS the best place for good music
I feel like crying watching good old Pretender sing this beautiful song. We have lost some irreplaceble gems, believe me! I've been captivated by Calypso music since late '60s and still can't get enough. Although I enjoy Soca, Kaiso has my heart any day! You can't listen to Spoiler, Kitchener, Bomber, Sparrow, etc, and not feel the way I feel. Yes, it so sad that "they don't make them like" these anymore!
This guy was born in the late 1920 and could rattle off all of those names in a song but what amazed me most he still was singing during micheal jordan me in the NBA
I am proud to be called a Trini, this man here is a son of the soil a good one, they don't make them like him anymore Rip to the Great Lord Pretender 🙏🇹🇹🙏🇹🇹

The memory skills and extemporaneous compositions and delivery of Lord Pretender as he was at this age is legendary... It's really nice to know there are people out there like yourselves that recognize and still appreciate the great contributions these absolutely genius one of a kind Old timers in calypso are really able to do. Yes as I'am pretty well in agreement with all of you that... THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THE GREAT LORD PRETENDER ANYMORE!!! May he R.I..P. 🙏🏽 Yes a gigantic loss to Calypso History. I listened to him a few times and fell in love with his style of singing and how he is able to as one person put it... Was able to really remember and rattle off all these Calypsonians names and deliver it with such ease and class🤘🏼👌🏼PRICELESS!!! I always wondered if he was still alive... When you go globally and look at the various nations of the earth they preserve their culture... The Japanese, the Brazilians, the Nigerians etc... Why in the world would Trinidad give up on this art form for "Any one from..., Flag to the left... On the count of four..." Why? This should be cherished, come man
To be extemporaneous means to compose on the spot your mind got to be clicking as you doing your thing melody and harmony rhyming lyrically the audience appreciation means that you is a true true calypsonian pretender you gone with the trophy still listening in 2019rip
Good stuff, I guy named John Henry from Saint Kitts put me on to this music, love me some Kitchener, Sparrow and many others. Also, I've been looking for a song about a lady who was afraid of water and her house smelled like she had a dead cat in there. If you know it please let me know.
I wonder how any Trinidadians , truly appreciate this art form? As a Jamaican, I really love it and can't get enough.
I think it’s very much like young Jamaicans and roots reggae.
They don’t appreciate the classics thinking that’s “old school “.
