  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at what appears to be Counter-Strike but generated entirely through a local AI model running on my computer. With no native game data, the AI interprets a pretty impressive version of Counter-Strike with just training data. Thanks for watching!

Those GTAIV videos fully convinced me we might achieve actual lifelike photorealism one day purely through overlaying an advanced AI image over a videogame. It's like the next evolution for photogrammetry tech but instead of rendering and calculating objects with millions of triangles that require a ton of computing power, you can have a simple object that then will be interpreted by the AI and represented as the desired item/ character it was trained to display instead.

I'm not sold on this "Diffusion model" version of "AI generated games" yet - maybe in the future, who knows. I think what we'll see first is you enter a prompt for a game you want to play and the system generates all the assets and code to create that game (so that it can execute code and run efficiently like a normal game). Seems like it has more potential (although who knows if it could ever generate anything worth playing, we'll see). Long before that (probably even now?) we'll see AI generated content generating assets and code for portions of a game with human direction.

10:10 to 10:27 is really fascinating. The AI generates takes previous frames into account when generating new ones. So when the knife pixelated, the AI tried to unblur, what it thought to be a Deagle and after that the blur seemed to resemble most likely a Tec9, which it promptly generated. After going to A site, the particular arrangement of barrels and the arch in the background was interpreted as the arch in long and so the next frames were generated based on that info.
Of course knowing what the map looks like, that makes no sense, but you can totally see why it thought that during the morphing between scenes.

It's possible that the technology developed through this project could be used as part of some development process later down the line to create some sort of incredible interactive media, but I don't think video games, specifically, are a great use for it. In fact, I think videogames are maybe the worst application of it. With Unreal Engine 5 getting to the point where it has absolutely jaw-dropping realism, I think a better use for something like this would be to gamify incredibly detailed movie-style renders. I say this, because when it comes down to it, making an AI version of Doom and CSGO is only possible because Doom and CSGO exist. To make a game using this technology, first you would need to make the game, then create footage of the game... Instead, you spend the time making movie-like footage, using the assets of the digital movie to create 360 scenes that can fill in the gaps, and you have something incredible.

When I think of AI, I think mostly of NPC that reacts to you and the actions you make in the game. That to me, is what I am looking forward to. Its equal part exciting and terrifying. Imagine if you actually killed an NPC and another NPC witnessed it and that NPC does nothing all day but follow you around and berate and harass you about it. The NPC can also alert other NPC to join in. You would be so inundated and overwhelmed by how crazy the NPC are acting that you have no choice but to shut the game off and never play it again.

Yeah but you need to understand, even Mutah mentioned at the start of the video - a couple of weeks we were laughing at it just *generating* videos of doom, nevermind making a playable video game. If we're making progress this fast, don't be surprised if in a couple of months/ years this stuff will be significantly higher quality with modern screen resolutions and higher frame rates.
The only thing I'd be worried about is application, because as we've seen with other AI, it can start to feed into itself/ become very samey (and we've already had enough saturation in this industry as it is lol)

What I would find interesting is generating a map endlessly, but with object permanence, so not the frames, but the map data with textures. Play Doom or Half Life 2, or just the Dust map, see something in the distance, go there. The game still rendered by the original game engine, so no weird artifacts, just you can go anywhere. Not simply procedural generation, but work from context. Skyrim, but with the entire Arena map. Arkham City, but with the entire Gotham. GTA 5 but you can just hit Route 66 and get to the other side of the country.

This is a classic example of "because I can". The tech is certainly on the more impressive side of what I've seen AI do, but it is indeed a waste of energy since you're generating frames in a much less efficient way than just simply having your GPU just draw the polygons and shade them. Will it ever become practical? Probably not, but again it's still impressive in the "because I can" sort of way.
