I got fired after 20 years with my last company (advertising industry/nyc) when I was 48. This was in 2018. I had a year of severance, which was cool. Then started with unemployment after that ran out. Sadly my mother was sick with Alzheimers so since I wasn't married or with kids, I moved back to our family home which was only a few minutes from where I lived anyway. I needed to help my father, an old guy himself, take care of her. So yea, kinda depressing being back at the house I left when I was 22 but hey I had no rent to pay anymore. And our house is a 2 family, so I pretty much lived upstairs while they lived downstairs. After my mom passed, I decided to stay at the house permanently to watch my father. I have 2 younger brothers and the 3 of us will be inheriting the home eventually, which will be about 1.2M split amongst the 3 of us. But after my mother passed, I started driving for Doordash and Uber eats. Fucking eh dude, I was making $1K a week. Couldn't believe it. Sure, not a lot of money compared to what I used to do but still good money since I had no rent to pay and was inheriting the house. After about a year or so, I became eligible for Obama care in NY state so now I also have free dental/health coverage. I've been able to actually save a lot of money again as well. The best part is I'm loving life. I work when I want and where I want. I go on weekend vacations about 4x a year (ex: Florida, Vegas, LA). I have no debt. Life is good. Never going back to being a corporate slave again. Now if I were mid 30s like you guys mostly are, of course this would be sort of depressing. Lol. But at 51, I've worked plenty...been there done that...you realize life is fucking short bro. I have friends dropping dead in their 50s. We put way to pressure on us as Americans to land big paying jobs with tons of stress. And for what? Drop dead of a heart attack in your 60s just as you retire?
For the last year, the job market has been bad. Do you think things are turning around now, which aided in you being able to land your job you are going to now?
I'm not sure honestly. For me it was a combination of luck, timing, networking with the hiring manager, and the role being a perfect match with my background. I know they say there's a summer surge and anecdotally I did a lot more interviews in the past month or so. But, too difficult to tell if that's a fluke or a sign of something bigger
I had a very similar story where I ended a contract June 2023 and just landed a new role August 2024. I noticed that between June 2024 to now I've gotten more call back and interviews. There was also a slight bump in January/February. Hope that helps

I do recruiting as a side job, sometimes in USA.
8 out 10 candidates talk shit about the last job in US, you guys need to stop this
I agree, talking crap about past employers isn't a good look.
@@Life_with_Jeremy "why did you leave your last job" I can lie or I can get sued.
What do you do in a nutshell as a product manager?
God bless jeremy ❤️❤️🙏✝️
