What's Wrong With International Versions of Hazbin Hotel?

  • Watch Hazbin Hotel in 13 different dubs (eng included): amzn.to/47SbKui
    My mic: amzn.to/47qMPyD
    My laptop: amzn.to/40JAdQL
Hazbin Hotel is finally out. The first four episodes were pretty good, in my opinion, and there's a lot to unfold. While many of you may have only watched the American version of the show, I also checked out its international adaptations. These versions had quite a few bizarre changes and some pretty decent moments. Trust me, it's gonna be interesting. Let's get right into it.

Its Because the German language has far less Swear words, we also start to use more and more English Swear words. Also we dont use Swear words as Frequently as Americans seem to do so. So a reduction of Swear words is was more fitting in a dup, as it feels more natural.

In 2D animation where most of the mouth movements are just open-close it's very easy to edit lines. They could have made the translation less literal, but added more words with the S sound for the sake of the joke. Professional translators and dubbers used to be more creative. Now some languages don't even get dubbing at all (Like no one wanted the lector in Polish, trust me)

@@3173_Delta in this case no there is not. There are very few alternatives which either don't fit or actually don't make much sense here.
For example the best I was able to think about is: "ich bin harmlos" which translates to "I'm harmless", and that doesn't feel natural at all nor does it make sense.
Someone else suggested "ich komme mit guten Abssssichten" / "I'm coming with good intensions"
What doesn't fit the lips and doesn't feel natural either. (Also coming in peace, being harmless or coming with good intentions are actually different things. similar but not the same).
And even if you find a fitting translation for one scenario, if you start with it you'll need to forcefully search for alternatives for every single sentence and that's just not always possible.
So may, in the future, don't claim it would be possible if you actually don't know the language you are talking about 🤷🏻‍♀️

+ if you change everything people will cry about the translation not sticking enough to the original
And hell, you'll have to change a lot if you try.
For real, is it SOOO hard to understand that this won't work in every language and for every sentence????
Do you want them to say random stuff just for that S joke?
Creativity alone won't save you here. In some scenarios you'll have to change the animation to make it fit.
And I, instead of you, know the language we are talking about.
But hey if you really think you know it better.
I won't crush your illusion any further...
[For real it's kina presumptuous of you to say that it would be possible if you can't speak the language. Do I know Korean? No. Would I comment they could easily change a dub to make it fit to whatever joke was implemented to a German series? No]
Sorry if I sound harsh but that's what I think about this.

Okay, let me defend the French version for a moment:
Why Katie Killjoy is voiced by a woman?
They did consider to cast a man to voice Katie Killjoy but they wondered if the reason why Katie is voiced by a man has any deep meaning. Is it important to understand her story? Is she transgender? But they found there were no real link, so they decided to go with a feminine voice. I've heard that the masculine voice of Katie in the original dub is more like an easter egg, which doesn't really matter in other languages as we don't know him. Fun fact: the voice of Katie Killjoy is also the voice of Mimzy (and was the voice of Vaggie in the pilot).
Why a robotic voice in Poison?
Because the staff had a very short time to deal with the sound mix. The cast explained they had only one day per episode to do ALL of the sound mix, while usually it takes three days to deal with only ONE song. The person in charge of the sound mix decided to go with a robotic voice to be quicker.

    - the german version is NOT tame (for germans). Germans just don't swear that blatently, usually. It is more creative. It hits harder to make someone think about how you just insulted them, because you chose to make it poetic or complicated. Therefore, the direct way this show phrases things is unusal. Btw we have a whole entertainment sector specialised on insulting famous people creatively and poetically. Alastor could have handled that element but... somehow they toned him in a way that he sounds like a 90s disney cartoon villain.

I feel that they were forst to stay pretty close to the english scrippted. Best example right of my head is the Loser Baby Song were Husk calls angel Dusk a "Power Bottom" a frase we litteraly have no meaning for in German. So they Stanslated it with "Start Knopf" which means "Start Buttom" in English. This and other such incidents make me feel that either Amazon keeped a pretty tied grip on the script or the German Voice actors were just Winging it and giving no shits. Because Normally German Dubs are Great especially like mentioned bevore when allowed to Abridge it to a deegre like the Voice actors were Allowed in Cyberpunk edgerunners.

... That explains a lot, actually! I love watching old shows in German, but newer ones not so much. My genuinely favourite dub is Knight Rider, because they add so much character, like audibly showing that one of the reoccurring villains is much more far gone than he used to, KITT being more playful and expressive, and the jokes being adapted and made more sense of. Sure, it's got its problems, but I think it's a very well done script and performance all around. Old shows up until the nineties I'll always watch in German, but I have to say, especially animated ones tend to weirdly disappoint. I cringe any time I hear the owl house dubbed, for example, it really is unpleasant, and I'm normally someone who doesn't get attached to voices, the script and performance were just genuinely worse. I never noticed the thing with "having to go abridged", but yeah, you are right. We seem to only be able to dub well if we allow for some creative liberties!

This video for quite alot of points really comes across as if a dub merely daring to make any changes is an insult that can't be tolerated.
Why is it such a big deal that the German dub has less swear words in it? It's not like they took everything out. Not every sentence needs 5 swear words to get the point across.
Or that they had fun with Vox' and Zestial's sound effects? The show is literally about finding the humanity in demons, how does the voice effect make them monsters now?
And Angel's singing voice singing a line slightly different, or Sir Pentious' "s" sounds not matching up in other languages? Man, what are the issues here?
Especially with the "s" thing. They had 2 options here: either _always_ try to somehow find dialog changes to keep the "s" thing, or don't do it and have it be a quirk of his that his tongue makes the known snake sound here and there.

    Hey German/Turk here!
    1. In the turkish version Angels rivals name in turkish is exactly the same as in the english version.
    2. In germany, we have a lot of words that are curse words, but are accepted for general use. You could use these words at school or at a job interview and no one would question it haha - Example: "krass" is generally used like the word "f*cking" to carry a word. Krass nice = f*cking nice. I guess they used these words because it just sounds "nicer" and also we germans usually use these kind of curses only when we are super mad or are in a hyper mood, which vaggie for example isnt most of the time.

3:40 As a German, if I had to guess: It's simply because German tends to be less concise than English.
Swear words aren't strictly necessary for conveying the statement, and are often used 'casually' in the show.
So I can see why they left them out in some cases.
(Although don't get me wrong, it does change the tone nonetheless.)

As a german I have to say, that the dub is freaking amazing! Yes they really messed up Angels singing voice but thats the only bad thing of the whole dub. Adams german voice may not sound like the english, but its still freaking great! Also I wouldnt blame the dub for not paying attention to Sir Pentious Hissing Sounds. They paid attention but sometimes there probably was no way, that they could translate it with the hissing, without changing the meaning of the line.

Lil explaination for the french version :
A french fandub of the pilote was made back then and bascially they employed some people of the fandub to be the official voices (pentious and nifty for exemple)
In the pilote's original dub, Katie Killjoy is voiced by a woman therefore they kept a woman's voice for the french fandub as well and simply re-employed Aurore Gautheur to voice KatieKj in the series

I'm Italian and i usually always watch tv series in their original language, but Hazbin Hotel was dubbed and adapted so well i think it's even better, with more insults and bad word, and i think it's way more fun, with the majority of the dubbers being famous their voices are famous, like Charlie being dubbed by the same person that dubbed Been in Disenchantment

  • @c47_erik45
    @c47_erik45 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Well I think they added the hissing in the german dub because he was sticking out his tounge, which would be a little weird with no sound effect. But because we dont reall have a good translation for "I come in peace" other than "ich komme in frieden" which doesnt have any S or C sounds we couldnt really do that.

Tifanny's name was translated directly using the same words from English dub to Turkish dub. It stayed the same. Since the word order is different in English and Turkish it might be easy to miss the name which was said not at the end but close to when he started talking.

as a french im happy they didn't gave to Katie a male, i was always opposed to brandon rogers cast as Katie because i had enough of viv runnin gag to gave a male Voice to a female character. especially for a star talent. i wasn't opposed to integrate brandon to HH cast but only for a new character, not a character who already exist, especially when his predecessor on Katie's role was far better. I'm happy that the french Voice is still a Women
and in french version angel dust have the same dubbing comedian even during the "poison" song

I’m pretty certain that the French dub uses the same cast as the pilot did, which would explain why Katie Killjoy’s voice is higher, as she was actually cast as the French voice for Katie Killjoy before Brandon Rogers was cast as her English voice.

For the effects on the voice (on Vox, or for Angel’s voice in Poison for example), it’s most likely because the team didn’t have much time to work on a super polished mix. In fact, for the French dub, the team said they had only 1-2 days of mix per episode, songs included. So that’s why it’s different!

    Pretty nice video to watch.
Just wanna say, the part about Vox singing in the Spanish Spanish adaptation, it doesn't sound off to me at all. People grow up in different environments, so what may seem off to some is very natural for others.
I grew up with Latin American Spanish adaptations and I too used to heard the Spanish Spanish ones and thought of them as very odd, which is fine (since I wasn't use to them)! When I started using the internet though, I had more contact with Spanish (the country) culture and their accent as well as the adaptations. Now I see Spanish Spanish dubs just as natural as the Latin American ones. I do wanna say tho, "The hotel of the old glories" is kinda funny, they DID NOT need to go that hard on translating the name. 😅

Katy Killjoy was voiced by a female in the pilot episode, but I think they just wanted to give Brandon Rogers a role in the series so they let him voice the character. Either way seems fine to me. Obviously Brandon Rogers is always hilarious, so I'm glad he got the part.

Sorry but some of those 'wrongs' you've pointed out sounds like you didn't look at them in further context. People in the comments have already pointed out German version, but I wanted to say something about Katie Killjoy. Notice how in pilot she's also voiced by a woman. I feel like they've made that change not because they wanted her to sound like a man, but because they wanted her to be voiced by Brandon Rogers (which makes sense). So it isn't that suprising that they've stayed with female voice, because this ester-egg doesn't translate to other versions. Also I don't know if that part with Polish 'dub' is a joke...

I love what they did with Adam’s voice in the Japanese version, it just sounds so exaggerated in all the right ways. I would guess this is because voice actors in that region are more accustomed to villain roles like that rather than roles like Vox, which has a Japanese performance that leaves a little to be desired.
