    Hi! Thanks for the infos, very good! As I see it is a Zero S and not the bigger SR, maybe the older model of SR looked like the new S version?. I already ordered a Zero S 2021 14.4 now here in Europe. I have to make at summer some trip to 180miles, I hope with low speed and easy on throttle, low torque setting I can make it without Charge tank option. Other option would be a Harley Davidson LiveWire used, for same price and it has CCS 1 hour fast charge, but to heavy for me.

    I got a used 2017 SR in July with 3,000 miles on it, rode it for 1,000 miles got the battery replaced under warranty finally got it back a little over a month ago and have put 3,000 more miles on it. So 4,000 miles in two months of riding for $9k and maybe $20 of electricity at my home (the rest for free everywhere else). They're not for everyone and I'm still looking to replace my GSX-R with an Aprilia RSV4 for the longer trips and track days but the Zero is my daily commuter at 60 miles minimum per a day. I haven't decided with the kid now if we're going to sell the Harley that my wife and I ride together.

    I live in Durham and just visited TPS in Raleigh. Went in looking at their Z650s/SV650s, had never even heard of Zero before .... About 50 TH-cam videos later- I HAVE to have one now.
    So would TPS be where you get this serviced? Also, is your garage heated and do you do anything special for the battery during winter months? Thank you very much for the video! You did a great job 🙏

    • @usmcsaxoki
      @usmcsaxoki  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually live in Indiana now and no, I lived in Jacksonville, NC which was too far to get it to Raleigh. Thankfully, the bike never needed specialized Zero service in two years time. I had a local bike shop replace both the rear and front tire, one due to a puncture and another due to wear.
      Only thing needed for winter month storage is to keep the battery SOC between 30 and 60% and obviously the tires properly inflated. My garage is not heated and this is not necessary to store the bike.
      Yeah, test ride one if you haven't. Will change your view of the world.

    Nice ownership review. Has everything to be noted, positives and negatives.
    Do you think bigger wind screen would be good?
    Can you make a video about 6kWh rapid charger for Zero SR? (connecting 4 of them to charge upto 95% under 3 hours in home plug)

    • @usmcsaxoki
      @usmcsaxoki  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think any windscreen would be good depending on what you want as a rider. A wind screen would help with aerodynamics and therefore, efficiency. Also would obviously help with a lot of highway riding. But, if you enjoy the free flow of air in your face, I wouldn't bother.
      Can't really comment on the accessory chargers. I know you're supposed to use a separate outlet for each one so that would be five outlets total. I could definitely see the benefit of having one accessory charger to bring down the charge time, but that's it. Otherwise, you should get the Charge Tank and a Level II installed in your garage.

    Great bike. Thanks for the balanced and detailed review. I have 2 EVs and am now looking for an electric replacement for my motorcycle. I just love having no maintenance. Just wondering what zero says about seasonal storage of the bike? My EVs are constantly in use so this has never been a consideration of mine. Here in Canada we have about 4 months of winter where you can't ride a bike because there's snow. Do you know anything about what Zero recommends for storage for winter or say if you go on a long holiday? Charge to 50% and unplug? Also, is the battery just air cooled? Thanks!

    • @usmcsaxoki
      @usmcsaxoki  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! Zero recommends leaving the bike between 30 and 60% SOC (state of charge) and unplugged if not riding for a month or longer. Yes, the battery is air cooled. It's very warm during the summer time in North Carolina (100+ F) and have never had an issue with overheating.

    From Zero:
    We at Zero Motorcycles have long been at the forefront of advocacy for tax incentives for electric motorcycles. Now, with the help from some of Santa’s little helpers, we were part of a coalition that got a massive EV tax incentive included in the new spending bill just signed into law.
    Starting today, new Zero motorcycles are eligible for a 10% tax credit, up to $2,500. This tax credit is retroactive and also applies to new electric motorcycles purchased in 2018 and 2019, which means recent Zero owners may be eligible for a surprise tax benefit from Uncle Sam!* For complete details, contact your local Zero Motorcycles Dealer today.
    We hope this message reaches you at a good time to help cut down some of the stress of the season. Also, from everyone at Zero, we wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.

      Not for everyone. I have a ‘16 SR and it has a slightly smaller battery than this one. I use it to commute (90 mile round trip) and for quick weekend rides. If I know I’m going to be somewhere for a while, I’ll just carry an extra charge cable in the storage area, and plug in for some extra range. If I were into long touring rides, then I wouldn’t have considered this bike. As it is, I ride to work and back, and plug in while I’m asleep and it is ready to go again the next day. There’s no maintenance, outside of mostly just wheels and brakes (brakes wear out much less often, due to regenerative braking). They are less annoying in traffic situations and starting and stopping on steep hills..no clutch, just throttle and brake.

    Great, in-depth review. I love my 2016 Zero SR, and while I do still have an ICE bike I only ride that when I need long distance capability. Although that's about to change with the installation of an aftermarket 10 kW Type 2 charger kit that is nearly twice as fast as the Zero Charge Tank but only replaces the belly pan and OEM charger and will leave my storage compartment free. It will also keep the center of gravity nice and low so it doesn't hurt the awesome handling of the bike. I'll also have a lot more flexibility for different types of charge points and it will charge 50% faster even from a regular wall outlet. Can't wait!!!

    • @usmcsaxoki

      66 miles round trip would be no problem for a Zero SR or SR/F or SR/S. Depending on how fast and how much stop and go traffic is, you could almost do that twice before charging.

    Every Zero except the SR/F will go all the way to 100% if left plugged in. Like a Tesla, the SR/F charging limit can be set. So, if you only need 80% charge, you set it to that and the bike will stop charging at 80%. For all Zero's bikes, they recommend that if you do charge it to 100%, do not leave it plugged in. This is to help longevity of the battery. If you know anything about Li-Ion batteries, they do not like to be charged all the way and then discharged to near nothing. Unless I'm going for a long ride, I usually keep my bike charged around 80 to 90%. The lowest I've ran the battery was down into the teens. The only way to limit the charge level is to simply go out and unplug it when it's charged to the level I want. Like most things in life, if you don't push them to their limit constantly, they will last you a long time.

      my wife has 95,600+ mikes on her 2014 Model S and the only maintenance she’s had to do is replace the rear tires and change the cabin air filter. She rarely charges past 65% due to the 85kW battery and only charges to 80-90% if she’s taking a multi-state road trip. This last summer, she drove from LA to Vancouver Canada & back. As simple as typing in the destination and letting the nav calculate where to stop and for how long. Naturally, the other 99% of the time, she just wakes up to a sufficiently charged car every morning. Takes just 10 seconds to plug in and another 10 seconds to unplug the next day- the vehicle is smart enough to charge when it needs to the state of charge it needs.

    keep in mind though all zeros have the greenwatt "calex 1200" on board charger that is prone for failure after 20k miles. I just replaced one and some guys with higher miles is on their second. If you use your zero for longer distances and often enough, than you are lucky enough for that to fail during periods that is covered under warranty. I wasn't one of those. I hit 20k miles after 5 years of owning my 2014 s, so i paid that out of pocket. It costed 800$ for the part with 400$ for labor, i did that labor myself. Ok, difficult question. From what I've heard from a source in the electrical motorcycle industry that I trust is that Harley-Davidson had a company they acquired make 200 or so of them, the batteries used in them are already years old and that once those 200 or so produced are sold, that's it. Harley will not make any more because they can't. It's essentially a publicity stunt to show people that Harley is "innovating" and "looking to the future". It's also a way for Harley to say that they "tried" but that it failed and people only want their other bikes. That sounds like it's a conspiracy but that's what I've heard. And for 30k, it's really going to just be a collectors bike for people with lots of extra money that love motorcycles.
      The bike itself looks really cool and I'm sure it's fun to ride. Needs to be under 20k though. And, why the hell can't it charge at Level II? It will only charge on Level I and Level III according to the website. Weird.
      And seriously, electric motorcycles are such a niche product anyway that anybody who wants one will research them and go to Zero, Energica or another small company that specializes in them.

      Andrew P Honestly I don’t know why brothers have a tendency to total vehicles that aren’t theirs,I let my brother use my car for the week and he brought it back totaled.. I ended up giving it to him and he sold it for scraps,I felt like a piece of shit for even letting him sit in it..

People complain about how expensive these babies get but they are the same people spending 50k dollars on a new Toyota Avalon. Keep it good man and hope you squeeze every ounce of fun out of it 👍

    If you have an EV, and trully want to protect the envvironment, either install Solar/wind power OR contact your power company. WHere I live I can pay a bit extra a month,b ut it guarantees most of my power comes from so called "green" energy sources, versus coal powerplants (which are very common in my state) or or gas powerplants.
    I do love EVs as a means of lower commuting prices. And you can have fun with them (Even a Smart EV!)

      Yep. My local provider is a Coop and they unfortunately don't have a "green" power option. Buying a house right now and plan to install solar PV. Video's to come...

    The number of distracted drivers on the road continues to increase with every new app on their phone. I used to ride road bicycle everywhere, even in Wisconsin’s cold winters. I stopped riding on roads about 10 years ago due to all the distracted drivers, only a matter of time before I would get hit. (Family friend was fiend for riding and got hit by a young lady, with a nice new car and no insurance. Messed him up really bad, he’s cognitively slow now.) That brings me to motorcycles. I used to be a “quiet pipe” advocate, but not anymore. I want them to know I am near. I have a quiet motorcycle and it’s night and day how many cars/trucks try to change lanes into me, drift into me, etc. When I’m on my loudest bike, NEVER an issue. I would go so far as to say I can see the moment they hear me because the swaying stops, they center up in their lane, and stay that way. Like the clickety clack of my T.I.’s boots I think. It makes me grin every time. On my quiet bike I can almost sneak up on them, get alongside and see them looking down at their cell phone. Anyhow, I like the idea of electric bikes, I would love to own one, but I’m skeptical about not being heard. We need every advantage to be seen and heard now that 90% (yes 90%) are distracted. Plus I like the rumble of my Harley :)

    • @usmcsaxoki
      @usmcsaxoki  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Understand completely. Bottom line, we must always ride like we are invisible and all other drivers have no idea we are near. (I miss the rumble too sometimes. Don't tell anybody.)

    Thanks for posting this video. Me and a co-worker had a conversation about Harley's electric bike. I think if they were actually serious about selling this bike, then they screwed up. I also think that at this point electric bikes in general are still at the novelty stage. I think that electric bikes have an enormous potential..... as soon as they can get their miles per charge up and more charging stations are available. But only able to go off the harley, 8 hour charge times and a 130-200 mile limit just isn't good enough. Not to mention not all that many charging places. Also, the price. The live-wire goes for 30K US. A sportster with a peanut tank has about the same range on a tank.and only a 8k price tag brand new. Me? I'm oldschool hardcore (?) Anyways, it's not uncommon for me to go 400-600 miles at a time. My normal work commute is 60 miles (30-eachway in rush hour traffic) An electric bike at this time just won't do that. I think that's what electric bike makers need to shoot for. Anyways, glad you like your bike. LOL when are we gonna see an electric bagger?

      To be honest, most Zero motorcycles can handle 60 miles. You just charge every time you park and you’re usually good to go.
      I have electric dirt bikes I commute on and I’ve been good. Just can’t go as fast for as long. Only downside.

    To be fair, it doesn’t take much to too a Harley. Literally any similar engine produced from 1980+ will be a upgrade from most Harleys. No hate on Harley. They have a purpose.
    But these Zeros are changing the game. Once batteries are standardized and stations have battery swaps, these things will be everywhere. But only if they upgrade the battery swap market for them. Without that, charging kinda sucks.

It's amazing. I'm astonished at what people pay to have the latest and greatest to impress their family and friends. This same bike will cost $500 or less in 5 years. After politicians find a way to hijack $$ off of them of course. I want one, and will get one, just not NOW.

    • @wingmanalive
      @wingmanalive 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@formeitwastuesday.1515 I want on one badly but you also have to remember what happens when they release the latest and greatest smart phones. They cost the most and haven't worked out the glitches. My ex dropped $800 on my son's Iphone 10 when it came out. Sure it was the baddest dog on the block and came with bragging rights but my first smart phone was an LG Rebel 4. It has a 16 mp camera, bluetooth, 32gb memory, ect. All the features and only cost me $50 with no contract. Is it an Apple product? No, but works just fine for me. I'm willing to wait for the technology to become affordable before I pull the trigger. Of course I was exaggerating when I said $500 for an electric motorcycle but when they get down to the $2500-$3500 range with better range and charging times I'll be there. Checkbook in hand.

    • @tdb922f
      @tdb922f 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is, its not all about impressing other people. If there are no early adopters, they will not get cheaper. If you think electric bikes are a good idea, and you want to see them everywhere, you can support the market by getting one when you can afford it. Also, the price drop will not be as radical as you're saying. Even as batteries get cheaper, you still have to build a motorbike and turn a profit. Never going to be $500.

    You love speed, yet it tops out at just over 100 mph HAHA! That's barely touching second gear for me. This thing could never replace my superbike or supersport on the track or the road. How many laps can this thing even do before the battery dies? It seems like a bike more suited towards people who prefer cruisers or hyper naked bikes., or the sportbike rider that buys one for the "cool" factor and the thought of going fast but never does. I personally love up and downshifting through the gears, the sound of the engine without any restrictions like cats, and the challenge of trying to tame 200+hp.

    • @usmcsaxoki
      @usmcsaxoki  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You do you, brother (or sister, don't know for sure). This is definitely not a replacement for a proper liter bike. I think by speed, I meant quickness and yes, I realize there's a big difference. I'm not a track guy and the fastest I ever want to go on or in anything is about 90 (on the ground. I've flown two seat aircraft cruising at 320 mph). 90 is fast enough for me. Be safe out there.
