@PrimalATC I am an athlete. I am really impressed with your series so far. I really like that you go in depth, because most videos, or even coaches, do not give you those little important details or tricks to technique, and it will end up hurting you in the end.
Man these videos are saving my life! We don't have a throwing coach at my school so I don't know what I would've done without these video series. THANK YOU
hey man great coaching tips, i've been coaching shot and discus now for 7 years and just recently found your videos they are very instrumental to widening my understanding as a thrower and coach. thanks
@BigJoeThrows Yes. After the discus series is done I will be doing the rotational shot put technique. I'm glad you didn't call it a "spin." Are you a coach or an athlete?
My PR is just under 50 meters. About 164 feet. It was a long time ago right after I graduated college. About 10 years ago. I fool around at practice after my kids leave and I throw the 1.6kg about 170 now.
thanks for all the videos. i'm a sophmore. i missed out on state by 7 feet. got 3rd at districts. i threw 130'7". i was just wandering if you could give me a rough estimate of how far i will be throwing next year with weight training and running everyday
Sprint. How far do you run in volleyball? 3-4 feet? Distance helps get you cardiovascular endurance for long distances. You need to be fast and explosive. Sprints, hill sprints, running bleachers, more explosive shorter runs are what you need.
Alright so i have noticed by watching alot of the Olympic throwers actually tork their body until their upperbody is parallel to their lower body, but you have told me to rotate just enough to get my shoulder to split that line, is either way correct?
I read about the don't run long distance. I do other sports as well such as volleyball and basketball where I need my breath. Can I do both short and long distances? Or would it hurt me in my throwing?
@BigJoeThrows I have always found that a one hour DVD can only cover so much. Here on TH-cam I can really break down the technique into smaller pieces and hopefully correct a lot of small things in the process. Remember, small corrections can lead to some major added distance to your throws at the end.
nice vedio coach :) i've just turned 18 last month i've done discus exactly 1 year and i've thrown 1.5gram discus 40m but i'm only 5'11" and not like 6'7" Alekna. is there any chance I would made to the olympics? or should i take HEIGHT GROWTH PLUS or something? I love discus since my 1st day sad :(
There are many different opinions but what is your thought on over rotating at the end? I have always over rotated and switched feet but I have also seen so many people plant their left foot and throw.....it makes me wonder!
I did a video about this a few weeks ago. I don't teach athletes to switch the feet unless they are ready and need to do it to stay in the circle. Many athletes simply jump in the air and throw where you should keep your feet on the ground, throw, and then switch as a tool to stay in. Search under this channel for the video and a better explanation.
When you wind up to the most optimal "power" position, do you turn the discus so you can hold it? Or try to keep it as parallel to the ground as possible?
Hey coach, I would like to first off by saying thank you! You've helped me gain about 10/15 ft in my throw! Only bad part is It added to my press not so much my spin. I'm having trouble with the first stage of my spin which is when I pivot out. I'm not sure if I push hard to get in the center of the ring or find a " sweet spot" but I'm having a lot of trouble with that. Maybe you could help me with that? Thanks I'll post a video soon so you can see
When i wind as a righty, i have found that if you turn your left knee in towards your right knee, you develop more "torque" for lack of a better word and i have seen improvements. Is this a placebo effect or am i doing something right?
First of all, the furthest you need to run is 8 feet. Don't run longer distances. Hill sprints are great as well as other explosive shorter sprints. There is no way I can predict without looking at your form but you should be in the high 140 low 150's next year if you train correctly and get stronger.
No. Put the crossbar on your back like you are doing a squat. Turn back as far as you can. The crossbar should end up between your legs/feet if you are turning back far enough.
Try to keep it as flat to the ground as possible. You can turn the hand a little, but never put the hand all the way under the discus like a waiter carrying a tray.

Yup. Only had a throws coach for one year which is why I started learning about technique so early.
thanks for the advice cos got a my P.E teacher signed me up for a discus and javelin competition tomorow and didnt even know how to do it!
I love your video! :) honestly they have being an awesome help for me.
Thanks, all the videos were very helpful.
Great video. Any chance that you are gonna do rotational shot put videos?

Should the athlete be turning on their toe when they wind up or should they keep their feet in place?
I don't quite understand the broomstick / javelin between feet drill :s are we supposed to look over the left shoulder to monitor the wind?

Hi! Is 10-20 meter sprints good training to discus throw or is shorter sprint better?
