Poor Christy. We loved you so much. You're the only one that came to us. Not only doing the big money gigs. I was only thinking about you today, that you would be enjoying the sun. So there you go mate, the sun came out to guide you home. But broke all of our hearts just the same. The undisputed chieftain of Irish Rock'n'Roll. God bless you Christy. You've made it. You found the sun in the end.

@@Blondie101010100 He was indeed. He went through so much and came out a shining light by the end of it all. We're all sinners. I think a piece of all of us who were lucky to witness greatness went with him on his way. It's a bit like loosing an uncle. one of the 'cool' uncles. And a bit like closing a chapter of our wild days. We'll all get there in the end.
Ticketmaster still have the 40th anniversary tour up as to be re-scheduled. I hope they do it anyway with Keira as Lead in their 40th year. That would be amazing to see. Christy would LOVE it I'm sure.
It would be cool to do something the day he is being laid to rest, maybe a gathering in the Phoenix Park, or Marley or somewhere.

I came across this Irish band by chance. This unique band and especially their brilliant lead singer cast a spell over me from the very first minute. Long live Aslan and especially Christy wish him the best of recovery ...

I can't think of a single song Christy Dignam lent his voice to that wasn't like warm honey on my soul. I've always thought that if it wasn't for the smack, Aslan would be known worldwide in the way U2 are. I'm not dissing Bono & the boys. Incredible musicians also....until I felt they sold their souls for America. Personal opinion only lol. As a teenager in the 80's, I saw U2 play live 3 or 4 times. Fucking incredible. Nowadays, I'd pick Great British Menu on the telly over a U2 gig. The grey ones in his hair seem to be the only roots Bono kept up with! He's done incredible work in Africa for charity and that should never be knocked. I'd say there will be a Sir Bono somewhere in the future.
Aslan, on the other hand, they never lost touch with their working class (some would say impoverished Irish roots. Now, I'm not Irish. No, don't throw me out of the door lol. I'm Scottish, working class background, some would say impoverished. First cousins of the true kings of the world...the glorious Irish. I left Scotland, age 19 for a 1st year of married life between London & just outside Glasgow. I've spent the rest of my life (32years so far) on the north side of god's own country. It was on my arrival here in 1990 that I heard and fell in love with Aslan, in particular the stunning, ethereal voice of Christy Dignam. 'This is' was my introduction so how could I not be enthralled. No one, knowing all of Christy's childhood trauma should be even remotely surprised he got washed away on a sea of heroin. An awful, awful lot of the youth of both Scotland and Ireland got washed away in the same sea as Christy. He talked openly & bravely of the childhood sexual abuse he was traumatised by. Thankfully, he got his arse onto a 12 step program. The ONLY thing that works for addicts. Sure, some manage to white knuckle it alone, some for years. But asked for an honest answer, every single one of them would tell you it was no kind of living. However, the lucky ones, like Christy who have been blessed with the courage to look deep into their own souls and answer hard hard questions like why, who and where. The few seriously lucky/brave ones are able to answer the questions they've bravely asked themselves. It's those who answer honestly that make it out of the dark mad days, back to their family's loving embrace.
I believe it was this time between druggy insanity and eventual serenity that the big labels, reps & producers pulled up anchor and left Ireland for the 'next big thing'. How were they so stupid as to not notice or really give a fuck abou the off the scale talent standing front of them. Not just Christy, now, not by a country mile. Billy and the boys were just as talented as Christy. He just happened to be the front man, and a front man like no other. My daughter(who, at 27, likes the band ) thought he was a dad dancer. When I explained that he was acting out every line, the passion of it blew her mind!
I spent a few hours this week listening to Live at Vicar Street. That was almost 25 years ago. None of the bells & whistles of today. Not even a sniff of auto tune. The pure quality of Christy's voice, the musicians, the harmonies. Let's be honest, how many modern acts can just step unprepared onto a stage today and pull off what the lads did at Slaine, Vicar street et al.
Now Christy's gone to his rest. He faced the cancer like everything else in his life....with a humble quiet dignity that humbled everyone around him.
So, there it is. The best band of a generation that never "made it", some would say. I heartily disagree. Sure, they didn't have the same level of success that U2 , the band they were always compared to. But they had success in spades. Christy performing just as beautifully as ever (with finbar furry on the late late show to name but 1). He sang until he couldn't anymore. Not for fame, money or glory but for the love of it, because he just couldn't not. What a legacy, no? Not completely. His family are his true legacy. They've been brought up in love with music and surrounded by love.
So I say goodbye to one of my heroes. A flawed human being touched by the hand of God, who blessed him with the ability to hold the world in the palm of his hand.
Rest In Peace, Christy Dignam. The voice of MY generation. So sadly missed.

Lay your head down, in Cardboard City
Cause you've nowhere left to go
Everything at home is far too pretty
Well I guess that just got bored
Sitting by your window, watch the world float by
Love is bought and love is sold
Like running water's hard to hold
And is the sun beneath the sea
Maybe that's the place that I should be
Missing out on all your beauty sleep
Running up hills but they're far too steep
Holding on to everything, till it burns your skin
Walking out doors, that just won't let you back in
Sitting by your window, watch the world float by
Got some happy in your head, it don't stop they cry
Love is bought and love is sold
Like running water's hard to hold
And is the sun beneath the sea
Maybe that's the place that I should be...
    Should be
    Should be
Can't stop the world turning, so you can climb off
Just because you're so afraid of finding yourself
Love is bought and love is sold
Like running water's hard to hold
And is the sun beneath the sea
Maybe that's the place that I should be
    Where's the sun?
Love is bought and love is sold
(Love is bought and love is sold)
Like running water's hard to hold
Is the sun beneath the sea
Maybe that's the place that I should be
Love is bought and love is sold
(Like running water's hard to hold)
Like running water's hard to hold
    (Where's the sun)
Is the sun beneath the sea
    (Where's the sun)
Maybe that's the place that I should be
Love is bought and love is sold
Like running water's hard to hold
And is the sun beneath the sea (Where's the sun)
Maybe that's the place that I should be
