I was at Wembley for the final England vs Hungary game with my Dad. I remember Mariner scoring at the other end (I could not see much). The best bit was the celebrations at the end. England had qualified for the World Cup Finals. It was the first time I remember England in the World Cup Finals since I was only 7 months old in 1966 and I cannot remember the 1970 World Cup.

You were lucky to be there, I was in America when this happened, and after the horror of watching England failing to qualify for Germany cos of Jan Tomaszewski I never followed the 78 qualifiers, cos I had left London to live in America, I was 4 months old in 66, and didn't remember 1970 either.....

same thing in 1985 ... Romania - Northern Ireland 0-1 ! that makes England and Northern Ireland to make a peaceful 0-0 in the last their match, to qualify both at world cup 1986 ,but first was our fault! that 0-1 home with N.Ireland was incredible unexpected! we were better than them but the result was unfair , a match dominated by Romania , N.Ireland all time in defense, they escape one time on counter-attack , they scored in min. 85 ... and that's it! their goalie made the match of his life saving many chances of Romania , he denied all the attempts to score for us!

This is a fantastic video compilation! I remember some of these games well. It's funny - looking at that in 2024, three days after Gareth Southgate handed in his resignation and you think to yourself (or at least I do), if social media had existed back then, how much flak would Greenwood and the players have taken? I mean, based on these highlights (and the memories of my dad moaning and shouting at the telly), we were a side of talented players with no real consistent plan (and definitely not one in defence). Matched by the Romanians? Beaten by some Norwegian milkmen? Wow. And isn't it funny how delighted John Motson sounds at the end of our 'huff-and-puff' victory against Hungary at the end? Just for qualifying? How spoiled we've become, making finals, semis... I'm not saying it reinvents some of the more defensive tactics of recent years, but perhaps it shows that we haven't really changed to any sustained degree.

Delving into the records, I notice Keegan missed about half of this campaign through injury. Brooking was sidelined for a while. These were England's most creative, incisive & clinical players with a good understanding, the former one of the indisputably world class members of the squad. Also: Gates (briefly), Mills, Mariner, Butcher of Ipswich Town were Eng players up to 1982. Won't happen for a so-called "provincial" side any more in this £-talks Premier League era.

Yes Brooking missed all three of England's defeats in the qualifiers. He and Keegan had an excellent understanding and it's one of those "what ifs" what would have happened if they'd been fit enough to play the whole of the 1982 finals rather than just half an hour in the last game.

Been watching since 1990. The 1998 team is the best team England had, all the problems started with a sloppy loss to Romania in the group stage which put England on a very difficult path in the second round. Still managed a 2-2 draw with Argentina with 10 men and a legit goal cancelled, remember Argentina was an excellent team, they lost to the amazing Dutch team in the quarterfinals mostly because they were extremely exhausted from the England game and the Holland game was just two days after that, Argentina did not even train before the game, still it took a coin toss finale for the Dutch to pull a winner at the 90th minute.
Now thinking about it, 1998 was probably the strongest World Cup.

We had at least 5 world class players if you count Shilton, Brooking, Francis, Keegan, and Robson. Hoddle and Butcher were coming through. We had a Harry Kanesque striker in Paul Mariner, and a Lineker style poacher in Woodcock. We had pace and we had goals from midfield in abundance. The manager Greenwood was also tactically highly underrated. But what really did us, was the format and Algeria being cheated out of a quarter final by Germany and Austria. We would have played France again in the semi with Keegan fit, and either Brazil or Italy in the final. It was set on a plate for us.

Francis was quality though always seemed to be crossing the ball. Woodcock in my opinion was the best goal getter we had ' them last two an Stevie Coppell would have been my 3 up front , no room 4 Keegan who when he got his chance missed a Blatant sitter - tried to do his trade mark flick , when the silly sod only had to head it .
