Country Radio could have been anything.... songwriting of this calibre LONG before Little River Band or The Eagles got going. Gypsy Queen is THE most underated Australian song ever written. Sadly neglected in the shadows of Eagle Rock and Friday On My Mind.
I lived in outback SA back in '72. No TV and no commercial radio. Thank God for the ABC radio and Sunday afternoons. This is just so damn full of memories.
How come this song hasn't made it on to movie soundtracks and TV commercials, like so many other Australian songs of the 1970s? Music publishers should get onto this!
Fantastic piece of music, cherished sound of childhood, driving along bush roads, hearing the song come in and out of tune on the radio. Beautifully written and sung and performed - thanks guys. This is why I love TH-cam - a favourite song heard again. My brother heard it on the other side of Oz walking past a cafe, mentioned it to me, seconds and a search later, I am listening to it. What a world!
One of the great bands of my late teens back in the 70's when I lived in Melbourne.30 plus years later I met Greg and Kerryn at a gig in Toronto and I took my well worn copy of the Gypsy Queen LP and the triple Sunbury album with me to get a couple of signatures. I'm glad I did , cos they were both blown away and Greg's daughter was with him who had never seen the albums and now she has.
Thanks for posting this - I remember seeing Country Radio live at the Monash University Union in the early 1970s - fantastic band. Brings back great memories.
Remember first hearing this song on GTK growing up in Melbourne (may even have been this clip), then saw them live at Sunbury as Greg Quill's Country Radio. Outstanding band and music. Thanks for upload would definitely love to find album(s).
I first heard this song on my way to Rutherglen in 1972, I had just got my licence and my best mate and I were off to Mt. Ophir winery for the weekend. I lost touch with him which I always have regretted. If anyone knows Andrew MacPherson please let me know....
This is from Hit Scene (ABC); host Dick Williams at the end is the giveaway! I remember a different clip from Happening '72 (0/10 network) as well but haven't seen that in ages.
Would love to know if this version of Gypsy Queen is available to buy yet? Cannot find it ANYWHERE else. I could get audio [old record, record to CD - but I would REALLY like this clip! :)
where the hell can i get a copy of thiis , looked everywhere !!!!!! who's the fella playing the harmonica ?? when bands were bands , great musicians !!!
Reintroduced to this classic via a cover done by Adam Harvey. I remember it well but crikey...I was all of 13 ! Bit too cool to like the style then (as you are when you platform shoes were about 6 " tall -nearly as big as me !) But now.....hell no. This song holds its own against any of the iconic Aussie classics.

Mostly forgotten and underrated Aussie song which i heard on the radio on Australia day.
pure magic ..
Saw Chris Blanchflower .. in a jugband Spasm, at the newly reopened Shack in Narrabeen NSW, playing his Gretsch steel guitar and harp.

Saw them record at the ABC for GTK a lifetime ago - not sure if this is from that day, but it's a great version.
My goodness - never saw the clip, and haven't heard this for SOOOOOO long. What memories it stirs .... :) Not avail on itunes????
would anybody know where to get copy of the country radio live album - been looking for it for ages
BTW if Kerryn Tolhurst ever sees this the mandolin he bought from Peter Lilley was mine! :(
But that's Rock n Roll!
I just found Country Radio's GTK video of Wintersong
which tv show was this from? GTK I presume?
@SoRudeRecords do you have a link, to purchase Gypsy Queen, by Country radio?
The Warner Music site is difficult to navigate.

Hate to say it, but the drummer's not exactly putting in a lot of effort on this video, is he? :)
Doesn't detract from the song, of course.
