What I'm getting from all these videos of WP vs HTML, frameworks, etc, is that if you're going to work for someone else you have to code, if you're a freelancer then WP is the choice. Time is gold.
Ahmed gamez Well its definitely not a wasted time, you can have a good use of those even in freelancing. All in all usefull stuff to have in your arsenal to use for web developement, cheer up.
I worked as a web designer for a few years and did the same approach - if it's a small site static html was the best, anything bigger and it's Wordpress. But I sometimes dread fiddling with bloated Wordpress templates or learning how a theme is constructed (with a million plugins etc) which ironically can be harder than navigating HTML
I just paid for my Domain Name for the next 2 years, I'm glad you posted this video. I will be looking into WordPress to drive traffic to my channel and Vlog
Roberto. Let me start out by saying, the videos that I have seen of yours thus far are great. This one I find a little misleading however. Wordpress is a tool which utilizes HTML/CSS/PHP, whereas PHP is the logical server language putting everything together. HTML/CSS are display languages. All websites are displayed via HTML at the minimum. CSS gives you easier style control over the HTML and PHP allows you to program logic into the site itself and create more dynamic systems. Wordpress is built using all three of these technologies. The core is PHP and the themes are a combination of HTML, CSS, JS and PHP. As such I find the title and information in here a tad misleading for people starting out that don't know the difference. Wordpress vs Custom Website would be a more accurate title. Just my two cents. But as someone has been programming for a loooong time, and does both custom systems as well as wordpress development, I run into this confusion all the time and the misinformation bugs me. Wordpress is a software/system which makes creating websites easy for those that don't know how to code and to maintain their content in an easy accessible interface. Aside from that, keep the videos coming man! Good work.
The more technically correct explanations you give would immediately lose the average person. This video is not necessarily targeted towards someone with your background. There is a challenge and barrier in making something accessible to the average person. My mother may know how to use email and a smartphone but would be lost and give up on any one paragraph of the phrasing you use... A video like this which is also an older video of mine where I don’t have nearly the amount of experience in communicating complex ideas for the average consumer just yet... is not meant to be misleading but can somewhat water down info that will be disappointing to someone like you, but help at 42 year old in Ohio figure out this whole “internet thing” they are trying to do.
Roberto Blake like I said, no disrespect. I really enjoy your videos. This one I just found a little misleading for someone looking to learn. My wording def wasn’t watered down for intro users by any means. But someone doing research might get confused when they think they go with Wordpress and won’t need to know any html. That’s all I was getting at. Thanks for responding tho! Again, your videos are great. I’ve watched quite a lot of them, especially the you tube channel ones. Good stuff. Have a great day!
Hey! Just listened to you on the Video Creators podcast with Tim Schmoyer -- So good! I have to say that your plan to provide content to very small specific audiences is exactly how I found your channel and subscribed -- your entire description of that audience you targeted was me exactly -- I've gotten so much out of your content, thoughts, ideas and I'm one of those people who is excited to see you grow and build on this. :-)
Dude I fucking love you. I just finished a 2-month Front-End course and had more questions than answers after it finished. Now I know what direction to go in.
Great video Roberto! I started getting into building websites this year and my findings match what you described in the video. Still don't have enough technical knowledge to put together PHP site so starting with Wordpress is best learing for me. However HTML seems to be great for small information sites that don't produce content. I'm taking steps to get that knowledge under my belt. Interesting take on using multiple hosting. I'll keep that in mind. :)
Fantastic video again Roberto. As you know I'm a fan of the creative HTML/CSS styles. Although I have used wordpress to a reasonable standard and what surprised me is how simple but effective it is. So many themes and such and you can even customise them to suit the needs of the audience. I like using Boostrap HTML and CSS to create websites. I actually created my portfolio on boostrap and it's working well. Although I do have to say as its getting bigger I'm struggling to keep the files tidy on the server directory. Might need to re organise
Awesome. But I like when am in control of everything. So i learnt html, css, bootstrap, javascript, php, mysql and cpanel so i can do whatever i want at anytime. Love custom design though.
Well said. I agree. I also use both. For my big site I use wp and always edit the themes around the design. It's really easy to add hml inside of it all.
I like writing on top of WordPress. I rarely, hand code from the ground up. Although, I totally get the control thing. It always seems like templates miss one thing you really want. Good tips.
Roberto, I've used both. Huge factor to consider is that Wordpress gets updated every week or so, the pluggings as well, the themes, etc. It can become a real nightmare. And if your hosting Co is not good with Wordpress you are in for a bad trip.
You'd be depriving your brain of valuable knowledge by relying on a CMS where you're literally paying for themes to compensate for your lack of self-learning HTML and CSS. Those languages are very simple to use and learn for free. You already pay for the domain name and keeping it on a server. Why pay more for ridiculous themes everyone else is already using? CMS doesn't add unique value to your site in that case. Nobody who is fluent in these languages and practices would submit themselves to a CMS.
I use Wordpress and love it! I have tried Wix in the past and had a horrible experience! You cannot do anything with your site on Wix. If you don't know how to code and Wordpress is too complicated for you, I would recommend Squarespace or Weebly. Squarespace is probably the best drag and drop CMS. Wix mught be better now but I did not have a good experience about a year ago.
Please i need some insight from you. I want to build a WordPress website and my goal is to build the entire front end from scratch without a theme so i can have complete control of the entire look and feel (UI/UX) of the website. Please is this possible and how can i achieve it if it's possible.
My question is..if i want to be a web designer(wireframes, graphics, photoshop etc) and a front end developer(html, css, javascript) ..how can i start making websites? ive been searching for a long time on youtube to understand the way of how front end developers work..but all of them use php and complicated functions to finish the product ..so except the html css js i need to learn basic php or a server side language if i want to be a desinger and a front end programmer?
My website is all hand coded... but my other sites I use OCPortal... it is the most complete CMS/Portal I come across and there for less plugins to go wrong...
I been thinking about building a directory but not sure if you can edit the category names on the plugins you buy? Any advice? Was thinking about using wordpress
Hello Roberto Blake, I like your videos they are going to help me a lot. My name is Datt and I wanted to start my online fashion business and I don't know how many pages I am going to have for the website what would you recommend? HTML or Wordpress? If HTML with who should I build my website And if Wordpress as well with who should build my website. Thank you
(Predominantly a designer) I'm currently using Muse and have had great experiences with Wix. What are your thoughts on Square Space vs Wix and other WYSIWYG site builders? Muse is my main go-to, but what are your suggestions?
Hi Mr. Blake. I am a new owner of business that I purchased along with the website. It was originally built in HTML/CSS but she is changing it to WordPress for me because I am computer illiterate...I want to be able to make the website my own and also not make it drab and boring. I want the website to come alive and have different aspects. Where people can blog, chat, leave comments and then I want to add videos and colorful pictures so that the website comes alive. How easy would that be for me and who do I need to be in contact with for a do-it-yourself-website.. but wants creativity and professionalism that sells products?
Thank you for the clarification about all of these things. I have a question about WORDPRESS, DID YOU MAKE ANY VIDEO ABOUT WORDPRESS? The second thing is if I learn HTML AND CSS, which language I learn next? And the last question is, Could you help us some videos about PHP like which language is great SQL SERVER Oracle, MYSQL. Thanks
Hi Roberto! Thanks for the content! I am starting a web design business now and i have made a system/process that i will use on every single client. Wordpress combined with Elementor pro and premium themes that fits my clients niche. I cant wait to get started. Do you have any videos on how you would promote such a service?
Roberto, why don’t you host your business websites on your own servers? Total control and uptime depending on how you lay out your technology infrastructure. Is that possible ?
If you could do a series on how to look for a product, determine what's good split, how to convert visitors to sales, know what pit falls to look for, and how to properly build a site for affiliate marketing.
What languages and tools would you recommend for build a site similar to Wikipedia, yellow pages, Craigslist and OfferUp? It going to be for a niche sport. Including security, membership 18 and above to access all features while non members can browse, mobile friendly, Process that semi automated as in members register that have to get a video chat with an administration or moderator to verify their account is a real human, Vendors/Sponsors badges are the people getting charge 1 time, monthly, annually fees, post/listing is free(basic info) paid listing/post is more developed and colorful, tracking for traffic what links are being used so I cam provide data to vendor/sponsor that pay upgraded listing.
I love your videos. You are so inspirational but you don't undermine how hard you have to work in this industry! I have a question: If I have never been to Design school and desire a career in Web / Graphic design, do you think that I can realistically start from the ground up with free online courses & self teaching to create a strong enough portfolio to get hired for a design job? Do you have any advice? I just graduated from teachers college with a Visual Arts teaching specialty and am hoping to learn design principles myself over the coming years. Please offer any specific advice you can!
I do believe you can, ultimately all of my jobs in the corporate world and even now as an entrepreneur were based on the work in my body of work/portfolio, skills in presentation, and ability to do networking. I've actually covered how to get your first design job in other videos.
No matter what is said about Wordpress, it is slow in the backend and suffers from bloated code because it was never intended to be for websites. Even to get the simplest things done it depends heavily on plugins. And because of so many abandoned plugins it is the number one attacked cms. Wordpress draws a lot of people who do not know how to code, they just buy a template, fill in the client details and sell it as a website. That is why it also draws a lot of clients who only want cheap solutions.
Love your videos man, always great. Btw, on a funny sidenote, my gf (who's a chef) always laughs when I watch your videos and it starts off with "HeyeverybodythisisRobertoBlake" as she calls it XD
ive used platforms like wix in the past but im looking for more control in my web design. I want to incorporate animations in my design as well as any other features that i might develop later but im unsure of the differences between html and css. What would you infer? my website will start out small but im looking to expand it to occupy my other talents and lesions of business
FUCKPORTIONS967 I'm starting out as well but from my understanding, HTML is just basic text, like a car with stock everything. And Css is all of the styling that goes into making it however you want. Like the system, tv screens in the seats, fuckin seat warmers, hydraulics, flaming mufflers, suicide doors, etc. you get the picture.
I use Wordpress for portfolio sites and blogs mostly, now I have the task to make online store with hundreds of pages and I wondered if Wordpress is better choice than code it from scratch? And if its better to be build on a platform, is there a better platform for online stores than Wordpress? What do you think?
I am looking for site performance over everything, what is the best way to go? My website has lots of videos and photos. I am currently using Wix as I have ALOT of pages, and it will continue to grow massively. I went with wix for the easy of design and drag and drop for all the different pages. My idea is.... I have been thinking recently of going HTML, because I can use custom CSS pages for the pages with all the videos and photos on as they all have the exact same lay out, with slight differences such as one page has video and another has video and photo, so I can create a ID for that difference, or a custom set up in a CSS for the specific lay outs. My guess is by doing this i am cutting alot of replicated code which wix might have copied and put on each and every page to get the lay outs. So by having a dedicated CSS for each page layout with a I can reduce a massive amount of code which increases my site performance? Or do I have that incorrect?
I think you are right about it more or less, and if you plan on using external css links, then you can also html5 templates, and even templates for other parts which are same on each page
Hi Roberto & everyone, We are planning to build a website for a resort and water park which has atleast 10 pages each or even more. Plus we also need to have booking integration via credit/debit card as the primary objective to drive reservations. One of the developers is recommending us HTML 5.0 with control panel. He says that the website will be really sleak and with the control panel, we can add/edit images & content without technical knowledge. I am really confused if we should go with this as I personally prefer Wordpress. Pls advise..
isn't this comparison more like cms vs "handcoded" sides? I find the title a bit missleading. You need html(css/php - with wordpress codex) to be able to write a wordpress theme. Else you use an existing one .... which is more like writing in office.
I use WP but its kind of complicated compared to HTML CSS, idk what I'm doing sometimes on WP but I know CMS are important especially if you build a clients webpage, and they don't have great computer skills. A lot of people want simplicity and automated services so building custom sites using HTML and CSS are just personal projects for me I guess.
Hi Roberto, great video. I was just wondering if anyone could tell if the website is designed using HTML or Wordpress, just by looking at it? I mean do the websites look a certain way if hand coded?
I'm more visually/graphically minded so don't enjoy getting to deep into code. I use Serif Webplus as it gives a deeper crearive experience than drag and drop but allows me to focus on the design and UI more than the backend stuff. Its inexpensive and relatively easy to learn.
Doubt I'll ever learn to code, I use wordpress and it should be easy enough for anyone if they give it time. They should probably play around with a free wordpress blog first like I did before setting up a new site with wordpress.
Hey man, great video. I started coding a couple of months back and Ive been spending lots of hours coding HTML & CSS. I know already how to make a responsive website however, Im having trouble with the next step, finding the right web host and getting a domain name .I would love to freelance and start getting gigs after I learn about the process to load my code files online. My question is: what is the best way to learn how to load my code online and get a domain name for free if possible. If you have an email address I can message you for more details that would be great. Thanks buddy!
Hello, I have the same development path like you and I am trying to do "the next step". So if you know how to help me with the hostiy I will appreciate it.
Have you used adobe muse? it's like indesign for sites. but i use wordpress mostly i have my cover page made in muse and i have a couple hand coded sites
Roberto Blake Ik this means nothing to the video but I just started YT and I was looking at your amazing tips on starting out, and ik it takes time and effort but I be having the feeling that big youtubers will end up being searched first instead of us (smaller you tubers as a whole) and just wondering I'm I on the right track
You know what, I actually am a 100% Muse supporter. However I just learned HTML, CSS , Javascript and PHP. I decided to export the HTML of one of my muse sites out and to my surprise, the code was ridiculously dirty. I would use Muse as a mock up or a demo.
I see newbies commission someone to make a website, and then there's no way to update it, because they don't request a content management system. And then ask someone else to update their website. And where would that third person even get the password? The designer usually just keeps that..
If I was building your website in WordPress I would set myself up as the administrator and you would be given author permissions. Then you can change content without doing something that would break the site. If you wanted someone else to do the background stuff I would make them an administrator then they would delete me all together
Hey man, sorry to be bugging you with a question, but I've been trawling the internet trying to find some answers and couldn't really find much. I really hope you can help... Do you have any info on how I could go about uploading a site made in Adobe Muse to Amazon Web Services? I've been out of the game for a while and am pretty much a noob when it comes to hosting with cloud services. Do you know the best way to go about uploading to AWS from Muse in the simplest way possible? I'm thinking the inbuilt FTP in Muse, but don't know how I would set things up in AWS for that to be possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or if anyone else here could help that would be awesome. Thanks for any help
Use a web host that you feel provides good customer service. As for WordPress, I'd recommend hiring someone to help you convert and old site to wordpress, you can do it manually but it may be beyond your skills.
Thanks for your quick reply, Roberto. Yes, it's beyond my skills. Could you recommend a reasonable price range for someone to convert my old site to WordPress? Could it be done by a professional web hosting site or should I hire an individual web designer? I know you once advocated hostgater but I don't see it on your website.
can anyone clarify? he said that html/ css/ php site are only good for sites with no more than 10 pages. but then what do u use for larger sites? also Stephen michook said that most small to medium businesses will mainly use wordpress. so in what situation would u use a less than 10 page html/ css/ php site? also if u make an ecommetce site which is more appropriate ( html/css/php or wordpress ) for small and medium businesses and which is more appropriate for large businesses?
My brain hurts from the title. WordPress is html based web design. Honestly this makes no sense. Hand coding vs WordPress would have made sense. Plus, you have the same amount of controle in WordPress as you have with hand coding, it just has pre built tools and a backend.
Thanks Man for the video, Can you advice Please? I built a html website and lunch it through Hostgator And now I want to add (CMS) to make the site easier to update. Any suggestion how can I do that?
Wordpress are the best for general common use like e-commerce and doesnt even care what layout outcome. If youre want more advanced and complicated, you have to pay plug-ins. Sometimes doesnt have 1. Thats the limit Hand coded controls them all, but its slow and needs to learn in depth. And yes its hard to understand what code purpose for
Thanks Roberto! Can u make a video like "WebSite Making for dummies" or something? Coz well A lot of youtubers are kids too,And they also need a website. (Including me) Just a request. Thanks :)
I've started a series on my channel you might be interested in. Although its up to you. I suggest something like Wordpres and installing it onto a server. If you want to contact me I'm all up for helping :)
I look on that like this,... if programer want to be more creative in building web sites then he will use a CMS where is an css3, php, html5, and other languages where he spend hours and hours on programing. and for beginers is word press where is all done in few clicks...
What I'm getting from all these videos of WP vs HTML, frameworks, etc, is that if you're going to work for someone else you have to code, if you're a freelancer then WP is the choice. Time is gold.

I use WordPress and DNN and I still hand code the sites. You don't have to buy a theme if you know how to write them from scratch.
So spend 1000 hours + is better than using templates with rather medium knowledge of CSS/HTML and configure it the way you like it?
WRONG.
Thank you! Someone who has a brain!

That is why it also draws a lot of clients who only want cheap solutions.
hey roberto - is php difficult to pick up? I've never used it, but need to integrate it into an application I am building.
What is the best to build a comparison website like Skyscanner?
Love your videos man, always great. Btw, on a funny sidenote, my gf (who's a chef) always laughs when I watch your videos and it starts off with "HeyeverybodythisisRobertoBlake" as she calls it XD
ive used platforms like wix in the past but im looking for more control in my web design. I want to incorporate animations in my design as well as any other features that i might develop later but im unsure of the differences between html and css. What would you infer? my website will start out small but im looking to expand it to occupy my other talents and lesions of business
+FUCKPORTIONS967 I'd recommend using HTML and CSS combined with HTML5 animation from something like Adobe Edge Animate
FUCKPORTIONS967 I'm starting out as well but from my understanding, HTML is just basic text, like a car with stock everything. And Css is all of the styling that goes into making it however you want. Like the system, tv screens in the seats, fuckin seat warmers, hydraulics, flaming mufflers, suicide doors, etc. you get the picture.
hmm thank you looking forward to it
thank you for your assistance your impact is rewarding
FUCKPORTIONS967 yes as the bro said, HTML and CSS work together, u do the composition with html and do the styling or design with CSS
I use Wordpress for portfolio sites and blogs mostly, now I have the task to make online store with hundreds of pages and I wondered if Wordpress is better choice than code it from scratch? And if its better to be build on a platform, is there a better platform for online stores than Wordpress? What do you think?
Have a look at Saleor platform from Django. Has everything you need to set up an online store.
Hi Roberto & everyone,
We are planning to build a website for a resort and water park which has atleast 10 pages each or even more.
Love these videos man.
I really liked this video, it clarified many aspects to me. Thanks
Is Adobe Muse bad? I love it ! So easy to use !
isn't this comparison more like cms vs "handcoded" sides? I find the title a bit missleading. You need html(css/php - with wordpress codex) to be able to write a wordpress theme. Else you use an existing one .... which is more like writing in office.
Great advice👌👌👍👍
Roberto Blake, are there any issues having the same .com name on multiple web hosting platforms?
I use WP but its kind of complicated compared to HTML CSS, idk what I'm doing sometimes on WP but I know CMS are important especially if you build a clients webpage, and they don't have great computer skills. A lot of people want simplicity and automated services so building custom sites using HTML and CSS are just personal projects for me I guess.
HTML vs WordPress is like Salami vs Salamipizza!
im new to Wordpress so can we plug a Wordpress site as a Django web application ?
Why not just use Mezzanine?
Such a great post...todo bad I didn't ese it a week before. I just got my designer building a blog/ online store with HTML...
Hi Roberto, great video. I was just wondering if anyone could tell if the website is designed using HTML or Wordpress, just by looking at it? I mean do the websites look a certain way if hand coded?
Just a control U on the keyboard you can see the code and definitely
Wp-admin , elementor and the likes are there .
The difference is clear
I'm more visually/graphically minded so don't enjoy getting to deep into code. I use Serif Webplus as it gives a deeper crearive experience than drag and drop but allows me to focus on the design and UI more than the backend stuff. Its inexpensive and relatively easy to learn.
Excellent explanation you have clarified me a lot of things
Please clarify which one is better for optimization
In my opinion Wordpress for most people
Which is best please tell me
Doubt I'll ever learn to code, I use wordpress and it should be easy enough for anyone if they give it time. They should probably play around with a free wordpress blog first like I did before setting up a new site with wordpress.
The Chewns but my dude coding is going to be one of the most needed jobs soon
Use netlify for deployment of the web pages online
How is a site like craiglist build? Or LinkedIn professional?
Have you used adobe muse? it's like indesign for sites. but i use wordpress mostly i have my cover page made in muse and i have a couple hand coded sites
+Brodie Henry i have, I've mentioned it in other videos
Roberto Blake must have missed that
Roberto Blake Ik this means nothing to the video but I just started YT and I was looking at your amazing tips on starting out, and ik it takes time and effort but I be having the feeling that big youtubers will end up being searched first instead of us (smaller you tubers as a whole) and just wondering I'm I on the right track
You know what, I actually am a 100% Muse supporter. However I just learned HTML, CSS , Javascript and PHP. I decided to export the HTML of one of my muse sites out and to my surprise, the code was ridiculously dirty. I would use Muse as a mock up or a demo.
Robert L. Sneed yeah it's great for that
I see newbies commission someone to make a website, and then there's no way to update it, because they don't request a content management system. And then ask someone else to update their website. And where would that third person even get the password? The designer usually just keeps that..
+Ann Elisabeth contracts and having some understanding of what you should have as a business owner matters
If I was building your website in WordPress I would set myself up as the administrator and you would be given author permissions. Then you can change content without doing something that would break the site. If you wanted someone else to do the background stuff I would make them an administrator then they would delete me all together
Interesting comments! I am trying to answer that exact question today.
Thanks for this! Your videos are very helpful!!
how are big websites like khan academy, freelancer, netflix are built
You don't wanna know
Wit html ,css , javascript ... python and so on.
they are from hand coding.
With multi million dollar staffs..
Thanks for your information that it's really helpful for me. =) I'm a beginner that try to use both
Thanks mate !!
Can we get an update to this? It's 2022 and I'm hoping there is an alternative to Wordpress. I'm not a coder so Wordpress is a bit of a strain for me.
I might do something covering this actually later this month maybe a “how good build your website in 2022”
do usage of WordPress make any advertisement in our website
My website was designed years ago using Dreamweaver. How do I convert this to WordPress? Is it recommended to host it via Go Daddy?
What is the effect of all the surplus code of a CMS on search engimes?
Thanks Man for the video, Can you advice Please? I built a html website and lunch it through Hostgator And now I want to add (CMS) to make the site easier to update.
Any suggestion how can I do that?
+Roy Alf should be an install panel for Wordpress
Okay, thank you.
Wordpress are the best for general common use like e-commerce and doesnt even care what layout outcome. If youre want more advanced and complicated, you have to pay plug-ins. Sometimes doesnt have 1. Thats the limit
Hand coded controls them all, but its slow and needs to learn in depth. And yes its hard to understand what code purpose for
What is ur camera name?
i have dreams to be a computer programmer when i grow up, u just learned the basics of html on khan academy
If you know basic HTML you can do amazing things with WordPress.
Thanks Roberto! Can u make a video like "WebSite Making for dummies" or something? Coz well A lot of youtubers are kids too,And they also need a website. (Including me) Just a request. Thanks :)
+Tanya working on a series with a friend for this
Roberto Blake oh great! Thanks
+Tanya try adobe muse
I've started a series on my channel you might be interested in. Although its up to you. I suggest something like Wordpres and installing it onto a server. If you want to contact me I'm all up for helping :)
Attempt to learn a language or get used to applications which do it for you.
I don't know if you have your own online course for, say, Wordpress. But, if you did I would pay to take it. I'm sure a lot of others would, as well.
A what do you think about Bitballoon?
can we convert a WordPress website into an app
can we use both coding and wordpress in a website creation?
Yes
great video Roberto
and @css { does better but then comes divi in wordpress thats when everything gets tricky
}
hey,
for a ecommerce website...!
what platform should I use...???
Shopify its simple
I look on that like this,... if programer want to be more creative in building web sites then he will use a CMS where is an css3, php, html5, and other languages where he spend hours and hours on programing. and for beginers is word press where is all done in few clicks...
Where did you learn HTML and how long did it take you?
+Aastran on my own at 13 with the primative internet of the 90s
Wow, that must have been a hassle. You've been doing HTML for so long
