Idk when you went, but omg that sounds funny. When I went there was a family sitting in front of me with a child, and the kid's reactions were priceless. She was like, "Is that a real bird??" mostly confusion. Man...RIP. Looked about 9 years old.
Sweeney Todd is my favorite musical. I was explaining the premise to my therapist, and I could keep seeing him slightly jumping from surprise. "Yeah yeah, they got it." 🤣🤣
I got to see him when I bunked off with my Dad on his business trip to NYC. OMG it was the BEST thing ever! I love Sweeney Todd and he is the perfect Sweeney!
I went into Sweeney Todd almost completely blind, and I was not expecting Annaleigh Ashford at all. She was amazing, best part of the show. It goes without saying that Josh Groban has an amazing voice, but damn. Annaleigh is so dynamic, so funny without it being heavy-handed.
May I recommend xantham gum to the bakers? It does help with achieving a better texture from gluten-free baked goods. A touch more ice water than usual can also help with pastry crusts.
Actually that statement about “The Music Man” is even more ironic in hindsight. As Sutton Foster, who played Marian the Librarian, is replacing Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett.

I saw Sweeney Todd once on stage (and saw the Johnny Depp movie, which was OK I guess). It's hard to write a good dark musical but this is definitely that. The story is full of male judges abusing their power and threats of deportation so it is *very* 2023.
@@markschildberg1667 Josh is only 42. He has said he saw a regional production of Sweeney when he was younger (my guess from ages 10-15) and probably watched the proshots of previous productions.
@@markschildberg1667 I don't know which show you're talking about. Is Sweeny Todd a TV show? I thought it was a play. Regardless, that comment was about anyone letting their little kid watch such a story. That's adult content.
I saw it a couple of weeks ago and I thought the same 'till he walked on stage, he really does have sweet features, but the contrast with his tired and grim look and those expressions (in the show) does feel like a good fit for his back story. During the show, and specifically in the end he's quite terrifying...
One of the aspects of the character is that he was a normal loving father and husband who was wronged. He didn't start out as a demon slayer....he was turned into one.
Josh Groban looking innocent is the entire point, as Sweeney Todd is a subversion of a romantic lead. Benjamin Barker was a loving husband and doting father who’s life was destroyed by a corrupt judge. He returned to London to reunite with his family, only to be told his wife was dead and his daughter held captive. Revenge and anger turned him into a bigger monster than the story’s villain.
I just saw it the other day. He comes off very sad and very tortured, his grief is palpable. But menacing? No. But I didn't have a problem with it. His singing made up for anything he may have been lacking.
Stephen, for a good comedian you sure have poor timing in interviews. Groban delivers a brilliant line and obviously has more to say, but you cut him off for a break. You do this a lot.
@@Pretzils1031 bit he's worn the beard for years now. I know my opinion doesn't matter at all. But I think he's more attractive without it. (I'm am oldish lady, so I'm at the age where I'm not trying to rob a cradle...)
I love Josh Groban, but he's a light lyric baritone and the role of Sweeney was written for a bass baritone (like Len Cariou, George Hearn, and Bryn Terfel - all amazing Sweeneys.) Josh's voice is a little too light, smooth, and warm; he's also a little young for the role. Same with the actress who plays Mrs. Lovett. They're both excellent singers and actors, but their interpretation feels to me like Sweeney Todd Lite.
Josh Groban is several years older than Len Cariou was, when he originated the role. The character is actually quite a bit younger, than everyone thinks.
Saw the show last night and the woman sitting next to me was hysterical as it was very clear she had no idea what she was getting into 😂😂😂

I got my therapist a poster from the show since her fav actor plays Mrs. Lovett. XD Gotta love therapists who love Sweeney Todd.
My favorite musical too ever since I saw the original stage production in the '70s with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury 🗡🩸‼️
So much talent... He's comedian too!!!❤️❤️❤️
I just can't help but think about the Andy Bernard cold open from the Office.
saw him in Sweeney Todd earlier today. He and everyone else in the cast were amazing!

I really like the movie too. (Love Johnny Depp!) The Broadway show right now is absolutely amazing- hopefully you can catch it! 🥰

Sweeny is an awesome musical, Josh will be equally as awesome
Swear I saw a horrific Mrs. Lovett's story about a tamale lady recently and immediately thought of Sweeney Todd.
Saw it last night and god it is good. And bold of Josh to assume Hugh Jackman didn’t go home and commit sales fraud or something.

Can't wait i will be in NYC to see that in a week.
Where is George Hearn in that Sweeney lineup? My fave (and the best ;)) Sweeney
Len Cariou
Agree 100%!! The late Timothy Nolen was also great as Sweeney and Judge Turpin.
You cut the best part -- where the band plays out on "Poinciana" for Ahmad Jamal.
Oops, no, I forgot the section where that was played -- my bad. Sorry.
So Walter jr. is now stealing his brother Andy's thunder in doing Sweeney Todd? That was Andy's Play!

Calling it "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," does that indicate that Every street has a demon barber?
There may be demon barbers on other streets.
