I think 99% of civet coffee is bought by well-meaning non-coffee people to give as gifts to their "coffee-lover" friends. The remaining 1% is bought by curious coffee-lovers who have no friends, and most probably never buy it again. My one pack of civet coffee was also a gift from a friend who visited Vietnam and I could only drink one or two cups, the second one was an attempt to make it better with a different recipe. I think it cannot be stressed enough that buying civet coffee, even if it was delicious, will never be a good idea because it contributes to the mistreatment of the poor civets. Even if the brand you buy is really made ethically using wild-foraged civet droppings, it still contributes to the demand which incentivizes unscrupulous producers. There is an endless variety of excellent coffees out there which don't harm animals. Just say NO to civet coffee.
I'm glad you know the dark side of this coffee. It's all bs, all hype. During a roasting/brewing class, I was given a few different cups of Joe for tasting. One was Civet. I did not care for it at all. I reserached a little and found out how the Civet is abused. It's so sad. I love coffee but I would never buy or support Civet coffee.

Have you tried brewing using v60 instead of phin? Phin coffees are stronger.
