    When I was young, our family was very poor, I went to the local community center to watch every episodes of Computer Chronicles, though we could never afford a computer at home. Now I am a network security and data center infrastructure professional thanks to Computer Chronicles, Stewart Cheifet and Gary Kidall.

    Windows XP was great and a great time to be a teenager like myself, we had MSN Messenger and MSN Chatrooms. Sadly Microsoft decided to close the latter due to safety concerns for children. If only Microsoft understood the safety concerns more massively with apps like tiktok, snapchat today....
    Microsoft really missed a great opportunity with MSN Messenger and the biggest mistake they ever made, was buying Skype out and merging it with Messenger back in 2013... thus killing off a great instant messenger.
    Had Microsoft played clever and kept and just updated the Messenger service without Skype, I believe it still would be popular today!

    Xbox launching with an ethernet only port was insane as few people had ethernet access at the time. When asked, an MS rep said they were thinking of the future and ethernet adoption will soar in the coming years.
    This move was a contributor to why for years (and even today?) Xbox Live is considered the best online MP service.

    Windows 2000 with a pretty candy shell wrapper ;) Just like Windows 7 is nothing more than a fancied up Vista (despite what people will try to convince you).

    • @johngrave5554
      @johngrave5554 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Windows 2000 was marketed towards business and data centers not consumers that mantle went to Win ME which was 9x based, while Win 2k was NT based. And win xp had many features that win 2000 would never get like 64bit version. TBH any operating system is just a "fancied up" shell for x86 instructions considering you can still natively run (albeit with a bit of work) programs and operating system made for 8086 CPU that released in 1978, on modern CPU's. Might be a bit or a lot of work but technically the instructions are still present in the architecture.

    OS X.1 was really NeXT which was purchased by Apple after Jobs returned. They slapped on a Mac-looking Desktop shell and called it OS X. It really had nothing to do with the previous version of Mac OS 9 or it's predecessors.

    • @tightlypackedcoil
      @tightlypackedcoil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No.
      There was OS X server, which featured the Platinum Interface and was the first Mac OS based on NeXt. Next came the OS X Public Beta, followed by 10.0, which was the first retail version featuring the Aqua Interface. 10.1 was an incremental upgrade to 10.0 which was free for all 10.0 users and added features and a good deal of speed compared to 10.0, but was still a work in progress.
