Don't have MS but have been in a wheelchair for 38 years. Raising core metabolism to lose weight has been extremely difficult. Had gastric sleeve surgery and lost 70 kilos, but put about 40 of that back on. Been looking into intermittent fasting. Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

i am living proof of your theory. i am in a wheelchair. i started intermittent fasting about 3 years ago using the 16:8 method. before i discovered intermittent fasting, i cut way down on sugary foods. that helped a bit, but weight loss really accelerated once i started IF. i lost 40 pounds the first year and another 20 since then (i need to clean up a few bad habits that have crept into my diet again). it really comes down to cutting out snacks and skipping breakfast. i drink lots of water (and too much coffee) in the morning so i don't feel hungry. it has helped me be able to exercise more because i am not having to carry that extra weight around. thanks Dr G for spreading the word! love your videos!

1st of all, wow! That is awesome, congrats!
2nd of all...THANK YOU for sharing this Michael, and for buttressing my belief that IF is the best answer to help folks using a wheelchair lose substantial weight!

Thank you. I previously lost 87 lb with fodmap diet change plus sibo/gastroparesis/gastritis. Stayed off over 14 years but slowly crawled back up with the steroid treatments. But I fight colonic inertia now which I blame on the SPMS.

Thank you for this!!! While I am not wheelchair bound, I have such limited mobity, exercise is a challenge. And I love to cook, love food, love meals with those I love. I trust you tremendously and will try this.

I’m with you Maria! But I have trouble making myself eat. My son is self taught but he prepares meals that are chef level quality. Yesterday he prepared a Mother’s Day dinner that was astonishing! I actually ate a reasonable plate full and that’s something that I haven’t been able to do for a couple of years.

You have no idea how much this video means to me, let me explain, I'm 7 years into my MS diagnosis and 6 of those years have been spent in a wheelchair. Losing weight has always been hard for me but being wheelchair-bound makes it much much harder, and with watching myself get bigger and bigger my depression and anxiety grow too. To hear that someone like me has seen real success with intermittent fasting gives me hope! Thank you Dr Boster!

This is great advice not only for wheelchair users but anyone with MS who has fatigue so badly it’s impossible to exercise. Thanks… I’ve been fasting 16/8 for only 2 weeks and already lost 4 pounds. 👍

I've been intermittent fasting for years, well before my MS diagnosis last year. Since the relapse that caused my diagnosis, when I fast more than 16 hours, my symptoms increase (used to fast 18+hrs no problem). My symptoms from the demyelinating event are absent at baseline until my body is stressed (heat, illness, emotional etc.) and I guess a fasting window greater than 16-18 hours is too much for my body. I still fast 16 hours at a time because my fatigue and general pain is less this way, just thought I'd share as this very well may happen to other patients.

Thanks for sharing! MS destroyed my appetite. I get munchies but have a very hard time tackling a full meal. I lost about 80 pounds but seem to have plateaued at around 212 lbs. I suspect that my eating patterns are to blame. I had never considered hunger as a stressor with MS but you raise a very interesting point. Hunger as stressor that increases symptoms? That’s something that I need to be more careful about watching!

Thank you!!! I have MS with mobility issues and cannot “work out” as others can. I’ve been using Keto with intermittent fasting to lose weight and control my diabetes with great success! I searched for an MS doctor who agreed with my choice to try this and found you. So thankful for your videos supporting my success and desire to continue on this path to support my physical wellness. 🌸❤️

I tried intermittent fasting before. I also tried 5-2 diet but I was too hungry to be honest. However, your timing of fasting and eating sound great, and not too demanding. I gained quite some weight since covid started, and my mobility hence worsened. And I had nasty pneumonia due to covid, but I recovered, and I will definitely try to adopt your intermittent fasting advices. Thanks for the video!

I am in the wheelchair and can not use my right arm or see in my right eye. I sleep 12-16 hours a day so in effect I am intermittent fasting. I am not losing any weight. My pjs don’t feel feel any looser, I don’t have the strength to get dressed. It just seems a vicious circle.

    • @AaronBosterMD
      @AaronBosterMD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Success does depend upon what you eat during your eating window. For example, if one only eats 8 hours daily but eats 1 pizza an hour during that time, then they will gain wait.

Good morning Dr. Boster. I just watched the video on fasting for those in a wheelchair. My fasting has became second nature to my lifestyle. A very satisfying way of life. Doug, coffee in hand from Lyndhurst getting ready to go to Peter B. Lewis to jump in the water...sort of.

Thanks so much Dr. Boster for this information. I have been trying intermittent fasting as I have Type 2 Diabetes I have found having an apple around 9PM takes care of my blood sugar levels until breakfast around 9AM. I monitor my blood sugar level each night and each morning to make sure all is well with it. Hopefully the 12 hours of fasting will make a difference as over the 5 years of being diagnosed with PPMS, I've gained about 30 lbs. Do you think 12 hours of fasting will help? Do you have any pointers for those of us who have type 2 Diabetes other than get clearance from our gp before pursuing?

Great info ty. I e often wanted to get serious about IF. My question is this. I have about 50-60 lbs I’d like to lose. How do I find out about amount of caloric intake in my eating window? And the. Types of foods to omit that according to many articles, drs etc we as MSrs should avoid? As in gluten, dairy, legumes. It’s so confusing. Where does one start?

im going to try your intermintent fasting of 16:8 to see if this helps since I end up sitting a lot of my day I have a simple question during the 16 hours should I be drinking water ..... or sugarless tea..... pretty much nothing with sugar or natural sugar since the point is to not have insalin rise so in a since no sweet like drinks during the fasting part of the day ......

    • @AaronBosterMD

this would be a good video topic in an of itself. Turns out pure fat does not spike insulin. So if you need to take pills do so with a small piece of cheese or butter! Of course you must talk to your clinician about what is right for you.

@@AaronBosterMD Please do this topic. I can't tolerate black coffee so knowing what I could put into the morning coffee (or PM decaf) to make it more palatable would be very helpful. I currently use Stevia + sugar-free coffeemate powder.

Something that astounds me is that I talk to my doctor and he knows virtually nothing about nutrition. Even the nutritionist I see knows nothing about intermittent fasting. They’re stuck in their old school ways and neither is interested in learning anything new about what they call fad diets. They earn their paychecks by sticking to their “tried and true” dietary knowledge and neither one really cares if I live or die. Either way, they get paid.
