    Hi. Just wanted to say a BIG thanks from the UK.
    I've never sprayed paint before in my life but having watched your excellent and informative videos I decided to take a leap of faith and restore my old marked, dinted and battered Yamaha XT500 aluminium petrol tank. I watched many other people but kept on coming back to your advice and help every time. I made some mistakes along the way but you always have a remedy, which was brilliant. I took my time and now Ive saved hundred of £££ and have a filled and restored and painted tank to be proud of. And most of the credit is yours Dave; thanks very much and keep up the good work down under.....John

    Hey I have a lip kit for my car that was painted. But the shop didn't wet sand it. So in a few spots there is some orange peel. Im planning on using 1500grit and then 2000grit. The buffer i have is a variable speed simonize 7". I have a meguiars 2.0 foam pad. Do you think the foam pad i have can do the job? And all the other items i mentioned should be fine for the job?

    For 1K acrylic paint we use wool as 1k Acrylic is thermoplastic and melts at a much lower temperature than 2K. Try testing it on a panel and feel the difference, the foam gets it hotter quicker when using a normal buff. The Bigfoot is a different story.. Getting this information from 3 different spray painters with more than 20 years experience.

    Another entertaining, useful and informative video - thanks for your efforts - really enjoying these vids, and looking forward to getting my 2K set up operational.
    I'm using a firefighters full-face chemical BA rig, running from two 232bar 12l scuba tanks via 10 metre whip hose(about three-four hours breathing time) - so there is zero chance of contaminants and no need to purchase a second compressor, triple coalescing filters etc, or worry about situating the compressor far enough away from 2K icocyenate fumes).
    The BA rig ran me just £50 from ebay - and was tested and signed off as good by my bro who is the BA Rig test chap at the local airport fireservice :)
    The two scuba bottles I have are from my diving days - I just need a convertor for the cylinder fittings from 300bar style to 232/200bar on rig, and away I go !

    • @mugget
      @mugget 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a great idea!!
      Just wondering how you go about refilling the scuba tanks? Do you take them to a scuba shop, will the do a refill no worries even if you don't have the diving cert.?
      I briefly thought about using a regular air compressor but that wouldn't even come close, since those tanks need 3,000psi to fill, plus a clean air supply.

    ForcedFalcon Hey I know the problem your having but its hard without seeing the problem, It can happen on fibreglass sometimes. Try using an etch primer and spray very light coats. As for your air pressure its always best to spray a test panel to get your gun setup the way you want regardless of what people tell you. 2k clear can go over 1K as long as its a COB 1K this is called (2K basecoat). I went over that in the last video. If its an old style acrylic 1K then 2K clear will cause it to crack. Hope this helps. cheers

    Awesome vid. The most informative and to the point. Im painting my bike soon and i experimented on a spare fairing with a duplicolor spray can and put on about 3 coates of clear. I started removing the peel with 1500 then 2000 and already i noticed it was taking down the paint to the primer. Question: is the paint output from a hvlp gun higher than that from a spray can?i know u can change the pressure of the gun. But because im using a spray can, would i need to put on additional layers of paint and clear?

    Informative video, thanks. Questions: The bonnet on my classic car has a lttle bit orange peel after having been professionally spray laquered with high quality acrylic paint (no clear coat) about four months ago. Can the bonnet now be safely treated in the same way as shown in your video, ie with 1500/2000 wet or dry sandpaper, then treated with compound and finally polished with wax? Grateful for your thoughts and advise😎.

    Hi Dave. Watch your vids all the time for inspiration. I am about to paint my bike a satin black. I worry about doing a single stage because you cant sand matte single stage in the event of peel or whatever. I am thinking of going the flattened clear coat route. If I do so, and if I have orange peel, will I be able to sand and buff the flattened clear coat to get rid of the orange peel without getting a gloss finish?

    Hi, I paid £3k for a respray on my Transporter a few years ago that has crazy orange peel. I'm looking to cut it back flat and give it a dust over with 2k rattlers to freshen it up. Would you still wet sand to get it flat or use a courser paper on a DA to flat it back? (there are some runs I need to get rid of too).
    I also need to sort some rust out on sections so they will go back to bare metal, watched a few of your vids now so if I'm right would I etch prime those sections once treated, then prime, top coat then lacquer? (I assume I don't have to re-prime the sections I don't remove all the top coat on). Then if i have peel after the touch up cut that back and polish...
    I will need to remove at least the rear barn doors as they have external hinges that are rusting and the slider for a dent repair, how long would you recommend before refitting (I don't have a heat lamp), one of your vids said leave overnight before handling but I expect door etc. will need longer?
    Thanks

    see painting acrylics by hand creates more layers though. my industry i have clients that have anywhere between 3-7 mill factory paint. after hand spraying Ive ended up with up to 40 mills on my chameleon pearl Exige. I've burnt through a supra paint with a wool pad which has prompted me to use foam. I've never looked back. I was always taught that the wool fibers were coarser on clear than wool. Im not really worried about heat so much as i am hollograms.

    Is there a buffer you would recommend for a beginner on the cheap? I want to paint my motorcycle and don't think I want to try and buff it out by hand, even if it's just the tank and fairing it might take forever and I plan on moving up to cars shortly.

      thanks man.. if you keep your hand or block flat on the panel and try and remember where you have sanded then as long as you have given it a good rub over the whole panel it will be fine. Its a bit hard to give a concrete answer on that.

      @@lokyinphotography you can apply a powdered guide coat to your 1500 grit scratches.
      Guide coat won't stick to the paint if it has not been sanded first.
      So, your starting grit (1000, 1200, 1500, depending on how thick the orange Peel is), is actually the longest, hardest part of the sanding process.
      Once you block sanded it to 1500, apply the guide coat. The guide coat won't wash off with water, it must be sanded off. This process works awesome.

    One coat of clear would be not enough. At the very least go for 2 coats.

    Very old video but nonetheless very informative and educational. Detailer here, with little experience in the wet-sanding field, and no experience in the painting field. I love paint correction and may even have to get into this field instead.

      Hope you Jacob are NOT too old yourself, nor too set in your ways with a poor vision to start anew now...because sometimes change for the good, and an honest conversion from doing old things will save a man's soul, before he parks his car away one final time like we all will , just like they say way south, Latin American way ...Shema!!!

      You need a good gun and correct nozzle size($$$), suitable pressure, correct thinner and reducer based the temperature, etc. If you do it for the first time, probably you will mess it. There is a lot of factors.. Usually we learn from out mistakes.

      DSM CHICKS if it's 1k acrylic leave it a few days. If it's 2k you can sand and buff after a day of not baked

    Hey guys. I love all your vids. I have 1 huge question I can't seem to find an answer for on your vids.
    Please, please tell me what to do if I have orange peel in my paint BEFORE I even clear coat?

    • @customspraymods
      @customspraymods  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just clear it then follow this guide.. Generally try not to touch the basecoat before clear.

    • @emailtorst
      @emailtorst 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks heaps guys. Could you possibly take 2 minutes and explain how the orange peel in the base coat disappears when you clear/sand/polish? Please cause I'm going fucking crazy.

    • @customspraymods
      @customspraymods  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once you spray the clear over the base, it will follow the peel from the basecoat. Then when you sand and buff it. The peel will all level out.
