Thank you for this! I'm having fun messaging Ebay sellers and asking them why their "original super-rare 1971" deck happens to have a web URL printed on the back. That's some pretty bold psychic activity.
Any RW deck with no copyright is pre-1975 if you look at the back of your pre-1975 you will also notice the word " FORWARD" is spelled "FOREWARD on the post 1975 decks too. Samuel Wieser decks have the blushing fool 1970-1973. Any deck thats older than 20 years old is vintage. The street address on the little white book will tell you the vintage. People replace boxes to older decks all the time. Any 78 card deck with NO copy right is again pre-1975
Thank you for making this video!! After watching, i went to check eBay, and OMG so many scammers!!! I can't believe it... Thank you for keeping people informed!
Interesting video --thanks! My Waite-Smith deck was purchased in 1985-6 and has some of the older features, but shows a small copyright on the cards for US Games 1971 &, on the box, has an ISBN number. I paid $9.00 for it and still have the lid w/the price tag which also has US Game Systems on the price tag. :)
Added info, I have seen decks printed in Switzerland with bar codes as well as copy-rite logos. Also, US Games moved to Stamford, CT in 1986 so anything NY is prior. Given I have seen NY boxes with copy-rite cards, it appears that pre-copy-rite stamping would be even earlier.
Your efforts here are invaluable. Thanks much. BTW, I found that U S Games moved from NY to Connecticut in 1986 so this can give some sense of a timeline. I also have seen a deck printed in Switzerland with no copyright on the box, NY address, no bar code, but with U S Games stamped on the cards.
This helped me a little bit, so thank you. My deck has the old font, the new york address, the lighter grey text box, was printed in switzerland, has no fool logo but has the copyright stamp. I was sitting here watching this video extremely confused. So, I can at least take satisfaction in knowing my deck is pre 1986 since it was still while they were in New York. I also read they started using the copyright stamps in 1975, so I guess I can narrow my deck down to between 1975 and 1986.
So i dunno if this is just me and my family but whenever we pick up this deck, it shows us everything and things we don't ask for or don't want to see. I wonder if this is everyone else's experience with this deck in general. I asked what college is meant for me and it takes me on a ride of at least 20 years into my future of my husband, someone's death and my journey and i'm thinking the entire time, "I DID NOT ASK TO SEE THIS!!"
+angelicbaby92 I never heard of such a thing. It could be more on your interpretations than the deck itself. If it is the deck, by all means I would love to take that deck off your hands lol
I skipped on them. I think it would be like the second time I buy from eBay. Seller did not want to go any lower. I really wanted them but he turned down all my offers. I thank you for your time. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
I have 2 Rider Waite decks that are from the late 60's or very early 70's. No boxes, & only one booklet, original font, no copyright. The booklet has The Wheel of Fortune on the front & back cover & says "Tarot Instructions". There is no info on the booklet anywhere, but does say "Printed in USA". The back of the cards are pale pink irregular wavy stripes with the Egyptian symbol Ankh in the middle enclosed in a dark pink rectangle. The Ankh is the pale pink of the card background. What year?
BTW, The deck I have is later than your 1st 2. It has PCS's original Fonts but it also has the copyright printed vertically (you'll notice below that U.S. Games started to print the copyright date in 1975) in very tiny fonts in the bottom right corner of the cards. I would consider a deck from 1975 - 85 still vintage. It also happens to be the 1st example of the later cards in the middle of your video. This would be the in-between deck you mentioned earlier. When I compare the back of the card it matches your 2nd deck perfectly. What would be the cut-off date for a vintage deck in your opinion?
Hi. It does not really matter which deck you get, they all work as they should. Quality of the cards is the purpose of my video. The Vintage rider waite decks have a superior quality than the ones printed today.
This is great stuff and good to know..thanks so much for making this video. I may have to do a video response to show you my particular deck.. I have had it since I was about 12 years old now and I do not have the original box but since I know how long I have had it ..I know it's vintage...lol.. cus I am too!..lol.. I am noticing some differences however in the magician card that I wish to point out. bare in mind I have had this deck for over 30 years.. so I am curious to get your opinion.
hello Angelo. I've referred to this excellent video so many times and found a great vintage 1970 edition without a copyright because of you. Recently I have heard that the lion on the Strength card is supposed to have the woman's green wreath continue into his mane? I sort of see that flower design on my card but it isn't subtle green as they claim. Can you speak to this supposed detail? Thanks a bunch, Anne
Thanks for showing the difference between the two decks. I've been interested in purchasing a Rider Waite Deck and was a bit confused on all the editions.
I have a UK copy of the Rider Waite deck. The cards are C 1971 USGames, but the writing on the cards is the older style that Smith drew and not the print type like in your newer cards. The back of the cards are in a different style too. If you're interesting in taking a look, let me know, and I'll sent you some pictures.
Thank you! I love the walk thru education! Question: The precopyright box with the darker green wand, what color is the magicians wand and sword on the actual card?
I have a deck that has some of the indicators of an older deck (old hand drawn writing, papery cards, magician on the LWB), but looks like the one the deck you say from from late '80s-early '90s, but has 1971 us games copyright on the cards. The ISBN 10 is printed in numbers only on the back right side of the box, no bar code. The address on the LWB for US Games is 38 East 32nd St, NY, Deck made in Switzerland, the LWB says printed in "United States of America," has an advertisement in the back for Encyclopedia of Tarot with the 10 digit ISBN listed (which is volume I). So maybe this deck is from about 1980-85? What do you think?
there's the AGMuller printing of the Rider-Waite Tarot, but is copyrighted us games. The box is different on front but the card stock is not glossy and the finish on the card is matte. The back says registered trademark of AGMuller. Made in Belgium for AGMuller Urania. 70 x 120 mm in size. ISBN : 3-905021-32-3. You can buy from Tarot Chest online in the UK. The Italian version does not seem to be available in Australia.
I own the in-between deck I believe; I don't have the box (I bought it second hand) it has the old drawn font, but it has the 1971 U.S. games copyright.
This was a very informative video! It's so good to know these historical and physical differences, although I'm not a fan of this deck. I'm a Centennial Waite fan all the way! 🌟🌟🌟 Great video! 🌟🌟🌟
hi Angelo, I have a deck that you confirmed as vintage but I do not have the box or the booklet. what I do have is 1 blank card in the deck and have been sorting them back in what I think is order. I believe they are in between 1970 - 75. someday I hope to find the box and the booklet for them. I have no idea how I have them but my exwife had a friend that was into readings with this deck around 1973 and it is possible she gave them to me. would be interested in chatting some time about these cards. have a good one.
This is a very good tutorial - however you are mistaken in one assumption you made about the deck (I believe you showed it from ebay) that had a 1971 copyright on the box back bottom, but no copyright on the cards themselves. Your assumption they were from the 80's or 90's is incorrect - US games began putting their copyright on the card fronts in 1975, so that particular set would be dated between 1971 and 1974. All in all an excellent video! On a side note, for those interested - the reason you can see the pattern on the sides of new cards and not older cards is because of the precision afforded by digital print processes - older mechanical/manual print processes would have ever-so-slight variations among the backs where the inked details landed during printing thanks to moving parts and manual calibrations - ie: the human touch!
One thing I have noticed about the US Games RWS decks is that they often have a funny "factory"-type smell, and I was wondering if this is the case with the vintage decks?
I wash shuffling through my old deck and noticed the world card is thicker than the rest. Is yours like that too? Mine says it's from university books inc but has no logos and or copyright and has the lighter grey banner on the bottom. The card backs are pink and have an ank on it. So it's not from switching one pattern deck with another.
Beware.... Some of the Chinese decks don't have copyrights on them either. Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal. Also, the newer laminated cards don't need to be as thick of cardstock as the older editions. The plastic coating gives them extra protection that the older editions don't have
what about the ones made in Switzerland but with the barcodes on the bottom? But it has no circle with no letter on the box, it is used, but compete said it was from the early '90s, would this be a good buy? And has no website, but the address is from Stamford Ct.
+Angelo Nasios Where can I find the old versione (1970-1980 I like those two older decks the one with the fool card and the queen of pentacles), as I wanted that however the store had only the radiant version which seems fine still but both means I can send 1 to my friend G.Aguirre, who does tarot and was taught by his mom since veryy young 94y.o.) he reads on Keen as Starfox10, and he can have it to use for me solely!
this video is great but does it really matter if people use the newer deck then the vintage deck? don't they all do the same thing as what every other tarot card deck should do? or is it different? I'm planning on buying a Rider Waite deck but I might look for it in a couple of store that i think may sell them. Then if I don't find them, ill buy a deck online
hi there, i have read the tarot at a very high level for 30 + years & i also have acquired many decks of the RWS, older vintage decks up to the 1980,s i also have a deck which is a tuckbox NOT the 2 part blue box, & its the first blue box edition from 1970, /71. which i believe is the 1st BLUSHING FOOL deck, then i have the 2 part box , 1971, / 72 , BLUSHING FOOL DECK, as there is 2 x types of the BLUSHING FOOL deck, so i do believe that you do have a few decks missing in the sequence of decks, please take a look at my videos, under, M.S.G.TAROT.REGARDS.....
Dear Angelo, Thanks so much for this video! I have a new Rider Waite deck, but would love to buy a genuine vintage one. Living in Europe (Netherlands) its difficult to find one. Wonder how I can find a reliable online seller. Maybe you know one?
Hi I am trying to find a decent Waite deck for a friend who is just starting out. I would like to pay a reasonable price, and get a deck that has all of the proper colors and symbols in-line with esoteric principles. He doesn't really need something perfect, but i would like to see hm with something "correct". I see all of these one-star reviewer's complaints on Amazon and can't make a decision........i am sure a vintage, like mine, will eventually surface, but can you say what is at least decent in all this that IS new? And, thank you, your video is very useful!
+ravenoptima1 Consider getting him the Universal Waite. Very nice colors. The older printings are nice, no gloss. Here is one on Ebay at a great price. www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Waite-Tarot-Deck-and-Book-Set-1990-Complete-With-Box-MINT-/361519292595?roken=cUgayN&soutkn=9oPhgM
+Gale Sal I have not seen an older deck with the copyright on them. They only appear (from what I see) on later printings. The 70's printings don't have it.
I recently bought a Swiss press, it's a new one and is a Portuguese version. Initially the paper is wonderful, but then it starts to wear very quickly and it loses the slippery quality and for those who fan the cards on the table, it can be a problem.
Hello Angelo. Can you tell me the difference in quality between the US Games pre copyright RWS and the "Blue Box" Rider and Company RWS? Thanks a bunch, Anne
Love your video. Great info for newbies. I have a question hope you can help. I have an eye on a deck and looks vintage but the address is 38 east, 32nd street not park Ave on the booklet. Are these vintage?
None at all. The only only thing that is holding me up from buying is that the wand and deck are the bluish color. It's my first deck ever so I don't want to spend too much money on it.
I bought the newer deck a year ago. I opened it,looked at it put it away and never used it. I bought the older one in 1983 and I dont know what happened to them. Could just kick myself.
Can you recommend a deck with the original symbols? A lot of artists have changed the symbols on many decks, and I prefer the original symbols if I can still get them, any recommendations?
Are you referring to the Rider Waite, looking for a "Pure" version? You can go with the standard Rider Waite as the symbols are not changed. The Centennial Version is also a great deck to get as it is a reproduction of an early Rider Waite from ~1930?
Stn0505 it's recommended for beginners to use rider waite decks because of their simple drawings but you should go with one that you connect with most and feel confute blue with hope this helped :)
I just looked at my "yellow" box. It was printed in Switzerland, for US Games, based in Connecticut, and has a copyright logo on it. Would it be considered "vintage"?
For anyone else who might read this and want to know: any edition that lists the Stamford, Ct. location was printed after 1990. Before that, they were in New York City. And if the font for the Major Arcana was handwritten, the deck is from before 1995.
+Nordic Moon Tarot se I believe so, I have not seen that version in person, it is know as the "blue box", it comes from the Rider Company, who originally published the deck in 1909. If they show a pic of the fool and it is blushing then thats good.
+Angelo Nasios That's the best place to get vintage deck. I got my one on 23 september from America. My one is i thing very rare from 1970 Samuel Weiser edition. Angelo what are you thing about this edition? Link to ebay auction www.ebay.ie/itm/281794760262?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
The copyright logos. If it really bothers you that much then go to the US GAMES SYSTEM INC website and let them know about it instead of complaining on a youtube video which they will probably never see.
I have a deck I probably got in the 90s - it has the registered trademark symbols everywhere but was still printed on Switzerland. No blushing fool tho :(
Another difference is the “Forward” on the older, Swiss deck, which is the incorrect word, and “Foreword” on the newer, US Games deck which is the correct word. That’s about the only thing that US Games got right in the re-issue of the “new” deck. Forgive me, I was an English minor in college and my eyes can’t help but trip over gaffes like that.
Heya. I’m totally confused now. I thought I bought a rare 1971 vintage deck. But, the magician on the bottom is grey, but no copyright marks. The cards feel like paper, but they do have a copyright in the lower right corner. The print on the cards is the old style like you said the artist did, but I do not have a blushing fool. The address is listed as 38 east 32nd street. No bar codes or websites, by o the back there is a serial number. From the sides there is not a distinct pattern like you show, and the cards are not white from the side, it’s like a mix newer the two, small blue dots appear on the side view. It’s like I have a a version between the vintage and 2002 deck you show. Also, on your last example in the rh video where you show the true vintage deck, you says that the word magician on the bottom of the box is not grey, but it is grey. I’m confused.
hi there, I totally agree with you there on this, COPY RITE [R] it looks NAFF & so annoying I am also a collector of all things rider waite smith decks , books ect ect, & I have a good few 2nd print decks with 2 x editions of the Blushing Fool decks, a rare TUCKBOX, blue box edition, this was the first box they used , then changed to the 2 part box system, & WHY US GAMES had to place every card with a copy rite logo on every card is beyond me, as no other printers had done this before, I found as soon as the US GAMES became the owners things went down hill FAST, Quality of card stock, back to a terrible thin tuckbox, all about the MONEY in my own opinion..... ps a good video, take care M.S.G.TAROT.....
The deck I have seems to be from the '80s (has copyright 1971 U.S. Games" on the cards) and has the word "foreward" on the back.
😬now I can't unsee the copyright
Sam III Thank you for the added info. It can be tricky finding the vintage ones.

I appreciate this video So much!! I just ordered one from Ebay and it's definitely the vintage one! 🤗
Hey Nadia, you must have received your tarot deck by now. Is that the original one you got and how much it cost you?
This video is so helpful thank you. I'm as of late obsessed with finding RWS decks from the 70's w/o copyrights on cards
PS how did you find such a pristine unopened 70's deck?
I skipped on them. I think it would be like the second time I buy from eBay. Seller did not want to go any lower. I really wanted them but he turned down all my offers. I thank you for your time. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
The deck I used most is Vision Quest, a Native deck, revealing illustrations on them.
Oh, and I mean intuitively revealing, not otherwise :)
What year?
I have a pink deck too. It was a gift when I was 17 or so so the date would be before 1966.
BTW,
The deck I have is later than your 1st 2. It has PCS's original Fonts but it also
has the copyright printed vertically (you'll notice below that U.S. Games started to print the copyright date in 1975) in very tiny fonts in the bottom right corner

hello Angelo.
Should the snake on actual card of Magician be dark blue or just on the box figure?
Thank you, this was very helpful.
Where to you buy the older versions?
Thank you very much for this info. I was about to purchase some so called "vintage" decks. I will be patient and wait.
I own the in-between deck I believe; I don't have the box (I bought it second hand) it has the old drawn font, but it has the 1971 U.S. games copyright.
I have that too! I was gifted them yesterday. I would love to know what year. Mine looks old
Thank u so much I'm new at learning tarot this helps tremendously 🤗
Massively helpful, thanks so much for this!
This was a very informative video! It's so good to know these historical and physical differences, although I'm not a fan of this deck. I'm a Centennial Waite fan all the way! 🌟🌟🌟
Great video! 🌟🌟🌟
Lol
If i am a beginner, should i use rider waite or any deck that is appealing to me?
Really glad you posted this as am so fed up with getting absoloute tat ...as I only use rider Waite
hi Angelo, I have a deck that you confirmed as vintage but I do not have the box or the booklet. what I do have is 1 blank card in the deck and have been sorting them back in what I think is order. I believe they are in between 1970 - 75.

Your assumption they were from the 80's or 90's is incorrect - US games began putting their copyright on the card fronts in 1975, so that particular set would be dated between 1971 and 1974.

Hi Angelo, what should I look for when purchasing the exact same deck as your 1st deck in this video?..with the Temperance showing. Thank you
I am not sure to be honest.
Excellent video young man. Thank you. Can you tell me what a vintage deck is going for these days? Blessed Be! Syker :)
What about the Universal Waite deck with queen of pentacles on one side says printed in Belgium 1990?
Beware.... Some of the Chinese decks don't have copyrights on them either.
Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal.
Also, the newer laminated cards don't need to be as thick of cardstock as the older editions. The plastic coating gives them extra protection that the older editions don't have

You can find them on Ebay but you have to becareful finding the right ones, some listings are misleading
I want the older version of the Rider Waite but it’s so expensive 😓
Wow, I have an older deck, according to all characteristics except for the bar code on the bottom. Interesting.
this video is great but does it really matter if people use the newer deck then the vintage deck? don't they all do the same thing as what every other tarot card deck should do? or is it different? I like it
+godkillers That one is stunning. I adore it.
When was the Blushing Fool and Blushing High Priestess published?
I love this video, thanks,

Dear Angelo, Thanks so much for this video! I have a new Rider Waite deck, but would love to buy a genuine vintage one. Living in Europe (Netherlands) its difficult to find one. Wonder how I can find a reliable online seller. Maybe you know one?
You find them on ebay often.
This comment is 8 years old, nowadays they’re even rarer and double the price 😕
Hi
I am trying to find a decent Waite deck for a friend who is just starting out.
Some vintage rider decks do have the copy right on the cards and box. For example, the 1971 edition.
+Gale Sal I have not seen an older deck with the copyright on them. They only appear (from what I see) on later printings. The 70's printings don't have it.
sorry, i meant the eighties edition
I recently bought a Swiss press, it's a new one and is a Portuguese version. Initially the paper is wonderful, but then it starts to wear very quickly and it loses the slippery quality and for those who fan the cards on the table, it can be a problem.
Thank you - I will have to order a copy!
tarotworld.com still sells decks manufactured in Switzerland, the font is the new one, but the paper is still better than the Italian one.
Hello Angelo. Can you tell me the difference in quality between the US Games pre copyright RWS and the "Blue Box" Rider and Company RWS? Thanks a bunch, Anne
These vintage editions, I think they are the same. Printed by the same company (Muller) and just packaged differently.
Can you help direct on where to buy a vintage deck from? Please and thank you!
My mother threw hers from the 70s away. I would loved to had them
Love your video. Great info for newbies. I have a question hope you can help. I have an eye on a deck and looks vintage but the address is 38 east, 32nd street not park Ave on the booklet. Are these vintage?
Carm Men not sure of the top of my head. Is there a barcode on the box? Or web address
None at all. The only only thing that is holding me up from buying is that the wand and deck are the bluish color. It's my first deck ever so I don't want to spend too much money on it.
Carm Men bluish or green? Is the snake around the magician blue? If so that is a set you want to get. Older printing
Yes it is and what I like is that the cards are sealed and has that red ribbon around.
Carm Men I'd buy it. What is it going for
I bought the newer deck a year ago.
Angelo Nasios Thank you!
Stn0505 it's recommended for beginners to use rider waite decks because of their simple drawings but you should go with one that you connect with most and feel confute blue with hope this helped :)
That pink one is the University Books Edition
I have an Albano Waite deck from 1968.
I just got a new deck with the long copyright but with papery cards
Thanks for uploading this its really interesting and gives us a real insight in to tarot cards thanks :) :)
Someone on EBAY is trying to say that the "Blushing Fool" is not A US Games Edition but another company from London. Can that be true?
+Nordic Moon Tarot se I believe so, I have not seen that version in person, it is know as the "blue box", it comes from the Rider Company, who originally published the deck in 1909. If they show a pic of the fool and it is blushing then thats good.
Seems like it might be between your 2nd and 3rd editions.
do you have some tips where can I buy or get the Original vintage version? Im not American, Im from Czech republic. Thank you a lot! :)
+Wendy Číhalová Hi Wendy, Ebay is the best place to find a vintage deck.
+Angelo Nasios That's the best place to get vintage deck. I got my one on 23 september from America. My one is i thing very rare from 1970 Samuel Weiser edition. Angelo what are you thing about this edition? Link to ebay auction www.ebay.ie/itm/281794760262?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
where can I buy or find New Rider Waite Vintage Deck Angelo Nasios
If we have a new deck we can still use it the same and get the same results I assume?
+Tim A. (VIDEOGAME420) yes
Excellent video!
The copyright logos. If it really bothers you that much then go to the US GAMES SYSTEM INC website and let them know about it instead of complaining on a youtube video which they will probably never see.
What year did they start making them glossy?
Man, I hope people aren't mixing up their boxes, LWBs, and cards.
what about made in belgium? dark colour deck ... i just picked up one for 4.00 dollars
Thats a great deal
Oh btw..the link in the description is dead..thanks again!
vivalapsych Sorry I moved my website a while ago and the link broke. I lost the original file as well :(
What do you mean by Tarot altar
do you have a tarot altar? is it necessary to have one?
Which one is better printed in Italy or Germany?
The Belgium printings from AGM
+Angelo Nasios on EBay I saw only two Italy and German. Printing in Italy has a lot of bad reviews on Amazon
Germany would be better
Thanks for this video!
Can't download the file any longer :( but I still love your videos!
How much did you get the pre-copyright deck on ebay for?
I have a few in my collection, they varied in prices. Some cheap, some a little more.
I think he may have confused a Wiccan Altar with Tarot Reading :)
Very helpful ! Thank you very much 💛💛New sub😊😊Have a nice day !
Blessings fellow Sag, I like Angelos Channel.
So where can I buy the older versions? Thanks
Billy Gaudet maybe a flea market? Ebay? duh. Obviously the old versions are not sold by US GAMES INC anymore, DERP
Most of my books deal with biblical/religious/metaphyscial and other esoteric stuff.
Thanks for the review. Very helpful since I've been wanting to get a class deck vs all my clones lol. Also oh my god you're so cute haha
Oh, yeah, Mine is a blushing Fool as well.
😊 thank you
I agree
Best tarot deck!!!👍👍👍RWS
hi there, I totally agree with you there on this, COPY RITE [R] it looks NAFF & so annoying I am also a collector of all things rider waite smith decks , books ect ect, & I have a good few 2nd print decks with 2 x editions of the Blushing Fool decks, a rare TUCKBOX, blue box edition, this was the first box they used , then changed to the 2 part box system, & WHY US GAMES had to place every card with a copy rite logo on every card is beyond me, as no other printers had done this before, I found as soon as the US GAMES became the owners things went down hill FAST, Quality of card stock, back to a terrible thin tuckbox, all about the MONEY in my own opinion..... ps a good video, take care M.S.G.TAROT.....
great help thanks
Thanks for the info. Now I know I got ripped off dang it
