  • Notto
The Notto is an introduction that is not only unsettling but also evocative. It is characterized by a percussion accompaniment in strict setting played by the kotsuzumi and the ōtsuzumi, and a non-congruent nohkan part. It always leads to the Notto song. This is chanted in front of the deity by the priest or priestess when praying to the deity.
The kotsuzumi’s steady eight-beat notto uchi tsume pattern is a signature feature of this shōdan. This pattern serves as a foundation superposed with various Ohtsuzumi patterns and the non-congruent nohkan part composed of five segments:
    Flute - Morita School(笛 森田流)
Small Drum - Ko School(小鼓 幸流)
Large Drum - Kadono School(大鼓 葛野流)
