Thank you so much. My driving test will be so soon, I'm learning about roundabout mostly from TH-cam like yours. This is really a great help, and explanation is clear. I'm still hoping that I don't get the hardest roundabout in my test. ❤
There’s a double round about in Liverpool one joins on to the next best piece of advice my instructor gave me was whatever lane you start in is the lane you finish in and it’s good advice I still use it today it’s a very very complicated junction but as with anything you get used to it , practice is the key . I’ve been driving for 16 years now and for the first year after passing my driving test I never had the radio on never had a cd on and anyone who was in the car with me wasn’t allowed to speak at all because I was always wanting to concentrate on the road 🛣️ and arriving safely. I have music on now if am driving around town and such . But if am driving somewhere I don’t know then I go back to that concept.

Morden test centre is best. I went to the Rosehill roundabaout, I missed my exit but still stayed on my lane, I remembered Francis saying to stay on the “Tram” lane, and that’s what I did… as long as you stay safe, it doesn’t matter if you miss the direction. Than you Francis. X
Really starting to understand roundabouts now..especially from watching the videos..when to signal & what exit to signal at to get to the exit you want..understanding it now so much..great video & great guy.
Wow this was so useful! I originally passed my test 2 years ago in Devob but soon after moved to Wimbledon and havent really driven in the time between. Now ive bought a car and roundabouts have always been an anxiety for me so it's awesome to find an instructional video covering a local area

I have the same confusion as some other people mentioned here about the rose hill roundabout at around 9:32. I understand why the instructor approached from the left lane. I think the road marking was really misleading and unclear. It looks like the layout of the roundabout allows the left lane to go onto the 3rd exit A217 because after the 2nd exit there’s no markings on the floor blocking drivers from changing lanes. But surely it blocks drivers wanting to take the 2nd exit when’s there’s traffic? On the left lane where he approached from, the road markings indicated a straight turn first and then left turn for A297 after the first exit which is also confusing as the left turn arrow should be for the 1st exit and straight turn for the 2nd exit. It should really say A217 too, that way drivers know they can use either the left or right lane to take the 3rd exit. What’s more confusing is that the 3rd exit can only fit one car so drivers from the right lane for A217 would have to check whether there’s a car using that exit from the left lane or vice versa so they don’t crash. That exit should have a solid white line to separate the lanes like other roundabouts. It’s really the roundabout layout being weird. For new drivers or learners and those not familiar with that roundabout this could cause accidents but it’s fine for locals who know that roundabout well.
My issue with roundabouts is moving off quickly enough when I’ve seen my gap. My instructors car (she’s now got a courtesy car annoyingly) had an automatic handbrake and I found it really easy to get my gear and set my gas ready to move off when I had my opportunity. Now I’m back to handbrakes, it’s really hard for me to move off quickly/steer with one hand once I’ve released my handbrake 😬
Was going straight this Sunday and I chose the right lane (Im not in the UK though) and I cut the road to the person to my left who wanted to use the 1st exit. Seeing this video choosing the same respective lane gives me a relief that I might not have been wrong. Surely the other guy should have chosen the right lane but anyway I have to refresh my knowledge about roundabouts in my country (BG) 😄
What a great video, packed with great information with clearly set out instructions. The view of the cabin and steering is a stroke of genius, so helpful, thanks!!
Passed very recently, wish I'd found your videos before! Roundabouts gave me anxiety for the longest time (took me over 2 years of lessons but got there in the end 😅). Biggest issue where I live is that we have a 3 lane roundabout right near where I work with 5 exits and half the drivers clearly don't know what lane they're meant to be in. I always had to do it on my lessons but it gave me the fear!
I'm confused, at about 9:37 it has markings on the floor to say A127 exit is in the right hand lane, when you are on the roundabout, the lane you are in after the first exit says left turn only on the floor. I was always told, for the second exit you can always be in the left hand lane unless it is to the far right (same as you said) however, for the 3rd exit you must always be in the middle or third lane. So I understand that's how spiral roundabouts are but how do you know before approaching a spiral roundabout that it is that and not a multilane roundabout?
As mentioned in the video spiral roundabouts are large roundabouts with multiple lane exists. You could anticipate that you are approaching a spiral roundabout if you see a large roundabout with multiple lanes. (And possibly traffic lights too) Remember you should always look at the road signs and road markings before hand especially if you’re not familiar with the road. In this instance you could approach this exit from either the left or the right lane as there are 2 lanes there which merge for this exit (so in either example you are not changing lanes) however cars from the right lane could also be going to the next exit.
That's exactly what I was thinking when i paused the video and there is a left only sign on the road before the 2nd exit, which means left only and you can not go straight ahead in that lane. The roundabout board sign at 8:55 shows that 2nd exit is central London A297 which is again confirmed by the road marking just before the 2nd exit, but he continued to drive straight ahead in this left only lane to go straight ahead to A 217 third exit. It looks like he should have approached the roundabout in the right lane, as it is advised to approach these spiral roundabouts in the right lane for any exit other than the first two on the left. Approaching the roundabout in the right lane would ease him into the middle lane and that would simply take him to third exit easily.
Spiral roundabouts or not, it doesn’t matter, you need to obey the road markings, the instructor is in the wrong lane , this would be recorded as a serious fault on the driving test,
@@BradleysDrivingSchool No argument here, driving is common sense, he took A29x left only lane instead of A217. 1.He stopped blocking all traffic to the left(no space for waiting) 2. The A217 exit wasn't even a double lane and his track goes right in to the fence unless he turn right again to the proper A217 track. He was luck as everybody in front and right doing it wrong. However, one infront knew he was wrong and rocketed before anyone emerge from A217 lane.
@@GetDriving I don't even think this is a spiral roundabout, as I can't see any new lanes being produced on the inside of the roundabout to replace the lanes spiralling off; nor any hatch markings where they start and veer away from the centre, so if it is a normal roundabout, I think it would have been okay to drift to the left at the lights just before his turn-off, as you do with a normal roundabout, but not before. I can't see traffic from anywhere else using that left-hand lane, but I still think he should have been in the middle lane to start off with, as up till that point, the left lane's marked for turning left only.
Hi Francis, failed my driving test last Monday on the roundabout similar to Rosemore roundabout due to not checking mirrors. After watching this video I fill confident tackling big roundabouts. Thank you!
Leaving the M5 and approaching Dudley in The West Midlands, there's a large and very busy 5 exit roundabout. 4 lanes approach. Its not well signposted what lane you should be in. As a result, end up in the wrong lane and all you can do is accept your mistake. Just keep driving. I see no end of stressed drivers on that roundabout.
I'm literally doing rosehill roundabout in my lesson tomorrow and I was really worried about it cause to me this roundabout always seemed complicated as a passenger, but with abit of luck I found your video that had that roundabout in it and after watching this a few times I feel abit more confident doing it so thank you and I've just subscribed. Great video
8:56 you did it wrong. Road markings clearly say left lane for A297, right for A217. You needed A217(right lane) to go to Mitcham. There was even a left turn only arrow which you completely ignored. Tram tracks 🤣
What I think he's done is to confuse this with a spiral roundabout, then assume that, since he thinks it is, he can't cross over to the left lane to take his exit. It's not a spiral roundabout . You can see that if you look at it from above on Google Maps: the lanes are concentric with the roundabout; they do not spiral, in which case, it is a normal roundabout and should be treated as such. Normal procedure would be to drift over to the left just past the exit before the one turning off at. There shouldn't be anybody already in that lane, unless it is him, as up till that point, the lane is for turning left only.
It would be helpful if you could show and talk about the gears as your approaching roundabouts n junctions please. You make it understandable. I hope you do. Thankyou in advance

Yeah I noticed that. I had to play it back 3 or 4 times. Confusing
Exactly! Thanks for pointing this out, just confirms I am not alone! 😆
Yes, he made a clear mistake! He just ignored that and swept it under the rug and continued, hoping we will not notice😂😅
I'm also glad I'm not alone on this. Made me doubt everything I know 🤣
Thank you for all the efforts been put into ur videos ,very helpful, and concise 👍
Thank you, sir. It's helped me lots to understand about the roundabout.

This was extremely helpful, I can’t wait to put this into practice on my driving lessons! :)
It would be helpful if you could show and talk about the gears as your approaching roundabouts n junctions please. You make it understandable. I hope you do. Thankyou in advance
