I can't fault the man for wanting to protect that label. Plus, I've seen plenty of these videos where mice and rats will venture into traps through confined spaces, so I don't think his extra structure really did much to discourage them. Maybe it did though.
Hmm, cute! But we skipped 1913, when stainless steel was invented, the type of steel that is not entirely stain-proof. (Yeah, not as strong, but we work with what we have...)

Suggestion: make the trigger axis closer to or inside the bait cage instead of close to the bar. That way the bait cage will require less displacement to be triggered.
Shawn.... Doesn't the trigger move BOTH ways? And.. isn't it open on BOTH ends? You should've made a 3 chamber box so the rats could see THROUGH the tunnel. That way they'd be more likely to go in and PUSH against the trigger. When I saw your set-up, I suspected immediately it would fail.
Have you tried setting up to your traps with gloves? Rats seem especially inquisitive with their noses. Perhaps the smell that fingers produce when they contact metal or human smell in general alerts the rats.
Note the fact that it's not rusted out in the least in all of that time. Makes you realize we are going backwards and also being scammed with the selection of materials and the processes in use today such as those in cars. Whether it was left in a box or not, it's showing very little rust.
@asdrubale bisanzio Actually, the ones I have seen lately and ones just left abandoned for decades in farmer's fields still hold up better than late model cars. That's what I am talking about. Timeless design and simple, get the job done engineering. The biggest problems you'll face now with cars are the effing sensors and engineered to fail electronics sold as 'high-tech' features. Pfft. @@WizardofGOP My guess is that the thicker (heavier) steel used on the old cars is slower to rust through. Plus, not being driven avoids water splashing underneath and getting into the crevices. Most cars typically seem to rust from the inside out.
If you dusted these traps with salt and left them outside in the elements, I bet you anything they would eventually rust. Most cars made today in fact have better rust protection than in the past.
Cut plywood off gases formaldehyde and may have deterred them from taking the bait. I would try covering the label with heavy plastic secured with blue painters tape.

I have a feeling the tunnel effect of the trap by itself is what gets the rat to go in far enough to trigger it. Since you have the other end blocked off, the rat isn't comfortable enough to go all the way in. They will only go in far enough to get some grub. Or, maybe they smell 100 years of rat death on the trap and know to get away. That's my theory...
Try redoing this one.. put the bait tray on the otherside of the trigger so they have to pull it to get it loose. i mean.. it looks like a 4 chamber bait area.. don't fill 1 or 2.. instead go light on 3 and fill 4.. the farther they have to go to get it.. the higher the chance to get 'em???
