As a DIYer and not a pro detailer, who also has to leave my car outside, I accept that my car isn't going to be perfect but do want it to be protected from degradation over the years. I don't have a polisher so it's good to know it's worth doing a coating and that I get a minimal polish-like benefit from that alone. Thanks for the video.

I have a small detailing side gig. Whenever someone asks about a coating and I give them the price they always say "how much"??? I have grown tired of explaining that you have to polish out the small swirls and scratches before putting what amounts to a thin layer of glass over it. Most are shocked when I put the light on their paint and show them what it really looks like. This is a great video, enjoyed it!

Yeah. It's been debated for some time now. It's trickier to market a coating without polishing because in order to get the paint clean, you're likely to put some scratches in during decontamination.
That being said, if you're taking the DIY route and don't care about any scratches and just want the car to be easy to clean, then yes. Wash, claybar, iron decon, waterspot remover, and slap that coating on.

I tend to live with swirls because I worry that repeated detailing will buff through sooner rather than later, even on a car that sits in the dark all the time.
It'd be interesting to see paint meter readings "before and after" to see exactly how much finish is removed during a full detail.

I'm not a detailer, but do all my own polishing / coatings. I coated my wife's daily driven Jeep a year and a half ago, and it still beads insanely well with minimal swirling. I think at the 2 year mark, I will go over with a light polish and re-coat it. The initial compounding is what takes the most clear coat off. The follow up polishing every 2 years, should hardly touch the clear coat. It also depends how long you anticipate keeping the car. I tend to switch cars pretty often, every couple years, so to me the thought of burning through the clear is not present. Larry actually has a great video about how long it takes to go through a layer of clear!

Funny you should upload this as we have just also uploaded a video doing full body PPF on a 430 as well.
What amazing cars these are. One of my favourite Ferrari , the balance of design to performance is incredible. The newer Ferraris seem too focused on having 800hp this and super fidgety steering.
These are an awesome sports car you can use regularly and enjoy the performance of somewhat!
In the UK at least, you can pick up an F1 Gear F430 for around £70k, which is a lot of money! But, not completely unobtainable.... maybe one day ! :-)
The one we worked on had 100x the miles! It was around 46k , compared to your one! :-)

One thing I noticed with the unpolished, but coated portion is; yes, it beaded very similarly to the polished-coated side, but water evacuated much faster from the polished side. In other words, better hydrophobicity overall.

Impressed👍🏻 I am on my third daily driver black car and you answered a question in my head if I should get a ceramic coat it….needs the swirls out first for sure. The add you had wrt the tooth brush looks really good, not too expensive and round like a dental polisher. You must have had a bad experience as a kid that scarred you mentally. The impressive thing is as a dental avoider, you hyper clean your teeth. Most of my scared patients don’t do the home care they should.

If customer isn't paying for polishing and wants coating im not going to say they have to polish it because they don't. plus you're saving clear coat so when the coating wears down then you can then polish and reapply coating... remember, the more you polish.. the less you can polish in the future.

Hello, no contamination was present as this was stored in a climate controlled environment. The wash was effective cleaning before polishing in this application.

Do you wash the cars after you tried it ?

Compound and coating without polishing would be interesting.
The coating might be thick enough to get out the compounding haze.
But then again who would do that other than a shady detailing business cutting corners ...

Great video, Larry, but should I worry about washing the engine bay because of all the electronics, microprocessors and computers that modern cars have. Greetings from England.

Yes because they leave the electronics exposed to the elements... 😅

Used to be a problem with carburettors and old electronics/ wiring but much more robust and waterproofed now. If in doubt then cover over an area you think may be a weak point

Steam and a soft brush is safe but stay away from wires and plugs...

Only thing I think that would make it better is if it was a manual but that's me. Who ever it was did a bunch of the upgrades out of the box with the carbon brakes. Definitely not cheap options back when.
