A U.S. Navy sailor was sentenced to 27 months in jail on Monday for accepting nearly $15,000 in bribes from a Chinese intelligence officer in exchange for photos of unclassified private U.S. military information. Petty Officer Wenheng "Thomas" Zhao, 26, pleaded guilty last October to conspiracy and receiving a bribe. Zhao, who had faced a maximum of 20 years in prison, was also fined $5,500, the U.S. justice department said in a statement.

In WW2 German Americans and Japanese Americans were put through far worse. People know about the Japanese Americans but hardly anyone hears about the hell German Americans went through. I appreciate you serving our country but you understand there's a justified reason why people are so leery. Look at the Chinese Spy balloon, the Chinese govt Biolab that was discovered in California, etc. Then there are Palestinian Americans that catch hell as well. The problem we have is a messed up establishment causing hell all over the globe, starting crap on various places and the media helping them stir up divisions amongst us. The term used was "fill watter". The phrase "Fill water" is a mistranslation. "Filled water" is a common Chinese phrase used to denote that a high quality item has been replaced with a lower quality item (Such as an expensive broth being replaced with tap water). Despite what Bloomberg states, the Chinese missiles were not literally "Filled with Water", but rather, the expensive rocket fuel used in the missiles were replaced with subpar fuel, with officials pocketing the difference. This means that Chinese missiles would still be able to fire & work as normal, but would not have enough range to go further than the Chinese coast. It also means that Chinese missiles might self-implode if they were ever launched.

Zhao emigrated from China in 2009 and became a naturalized American citizen in 2012. Five years later, he enlisted in the Navy. Pretty sure he has a VERY clear understanding how the CCP works, since all businesses in that country owe allegiance to the party and are responsible for developing "dual use" technology (aka civilian and military use). Even if it was for "corporate" reasons, the dual use mandate is still in play.

I think the other thing that was most notable is that often these individuals were often politically motivated too. A number of the IT's that came up in my online training in the Army, implicated that foreign nationals who came to the US to gain citizenship in the various services, ended up becoming agents working for those foreign adversaries.
They didn't come here to integrate and adopt the American way of life.
They came here to internally subjugate and undermine it.
Which is why Veterans are having an immense concern about the uptick in the US Army and Military's considerations for bringing in foreign nationals to enlist in the service.
How many are just potential informants and spies? How many are potential active shooters? How many have no allegiance to the US and just the potential for a better pay check then their home country's baseline median pay?
I am willing to bet that a majority of them are going to become a problem not too far down the road.

Always need to be careful with the American justice system on whether someone is talking about the maximum sentence, the actual sentence, and what was actually served, because those are all very different numbers from each other.
The media loves to play up the "shoplifter facing up to 153 years in prison" angle, because they are multiplying a 3 year sentence by the 51 shoplifting charges the DA decided to throw at the guy (or whatever, I'm just making up numbers). Thing is that everyone, including the judge, knows that is total BS. So the actual sentence would probably be more like 2 years. And then, because most states won't build enough prisons, the dude will most likely get punted out in 8-12 months anyway to make room for the next criminal and told to serve the rest of his sentence at home (not even necessarily house arrest, just... don't do drugs or hang out with criminals and meet with a parole officer regularly).
Are there times when our system decides to just screw someone for little reason? Yes. Can it be absurdly difficult to rent an apartment or get a job with a criminal record? Yes. Do the news headlines reflect the actual situation here? No.

In my day, here’s what he probably would have gotten:
    - reduction of rank to E1.
    -forfeiture of all pay
    - a decade or two in Ft. levinworth.
    - dishonorable discharge.
I don’t think im exaggerating either. 5500$ and less than two years in prison? Are you kidding me?! Given the drop in standards, i half expect to hear he’ll get a bad conduct discharge that turns into a general discharge after 6 months of his separation date.

You would think, but your are generally incorrect based on alot of historical events.
If you look into the history of it, in the 20th century spies generally never get arrested, and if they did it usually wasn't for long (the longest was american who spied for Israel, who I think is still in US prison). I think this is done because maybe they use them in other ways or use them as pawns. And no, it has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans. Oddly many countries are lax on it for some reason, I think it's many times an unspoken agreement, kinda like "we'll be easy on your spies if you are easy on ours". But of course not all the time

Well, for PC reasons, they aren't allowed to notice that 95% of Chinese spies caught are Chinese-born, first-generation immigrants. Imagine the reverse. The Chinese military would never hire a white dude born and raised in Arkansas if it had only been three years after he immigrated to China from the U.S. If they did hire him at all, it would be to teach English and not to handle classified information. As Americans, we would feel a little hurt if he didn't still have some loyalty to the U.S.
