ah if the space was there to stand at the end of my lathe I agree, but I dont have the space there, my sharpening station is there, I suppose I could move it
I loved this. I recently bought the same Laguna and thanks for you short critique of it. I have not been able to do any turning yet because of recent surgery. Also, I have a whole stack of olive wood from some trees I cut down, so am anxious to turn it. Thanks.
Ron Snipes I’m thinking I’ll do a review on this lathe, it is a real pleasure to turn with it. Olive wood is beautiful so you’ll enjoy turning it. Thanks for watching Rob
That's an absolutely wonderful piece of all of olive wood! I thought for a minute it was pecan, however once I saw you get halfway through I knew better! I love the effect you gave it, making it your very own! Beautiful job!
Glue a contrasting veneer to the flat sides of the corner cutoffs and then glue them all together back to back to form a cross shape. That will give you a beautiful blank for a bottle stopper, ornament, or other small project.
Lisa Barnett Ahaaa yes the Elvis number plate, I used to have that in the back window of my car in the 80’s when I lived in England 😊 Thanks for watching Rob
Spectacular piece, Rob. Great finish also. What's not to like about olive wood. Looks like you're getting along quite well with the new lathe, I knew you would love it. Looking forward to your next project.
For not doing much hollowing, the piece turned out to be beautiful. Also not sure if you have enough room or not, but head stock will slide down and you can stand at the end and keep you hollowing tools on your hip. I have a 24" Lugana and I do that and it make it is much less tiresome and make the turning more fun. Keep up the good work and enjoy the new lath.
Hi Thanks for watching, I don’t really have the room to do that as my sharpening station is at the end of the lathe, I’m really enjoying turning on it, so solid and great control Take care Rob
Now, I really like your video, much better. And, a great job. I think I saw your chuck wobbling. I had the same problem, it is those washers. They are not machined and it doesn't take much. Take care, Larry P.S. Nice lathe, I hadn't seen it before.
The Wood Whirler This is the first videoed project on the new Laguna, a couple people now have said they saw a wobble, I will have to check and see this. Thanks for watching and commenting Rob
@@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning Like I said, I had the same problem. Just keep some wax on both parts and you won't need the washers. Take care, Larry
If you are concerned about a wobble , you could go to a machine shop supply and get a magnetic base dial indicator, can use it to check spindle and chuck runout
lol, and what use is a monet or picasso painting, it is an art form and not every piece has to have a use other than pleasing to the hand and eye. hopefully you can appreciate the art form take care Rob
The Easy Wood tools have quite a large carbide tip. Don't you find them a bit fierce using them flat? Hard work and a bit nervy hollowing like this. Lovely result.
Hi Anthony The tips are pretty small yet can be fierce flat, you can tilt the tool slightly to sheer the cut, you need to cut bang on center of spindle height too, this helps a lot. Thanks for watching Rob
thanks Miss Tee. ive made a few and they are always fun to turn, a bit more challenging than just another bowl, but don't get me wrong i love turning bowls too take care Rob
Wow...Just a fantastic piece. I've been trying to do some hollow vessels but I always end up with a lot of vibration. Not sure how to avoid it. Would you have any tips? I'm also using the Easy wood tools but vibration scares the hell out of me.😂
Hi Daniel so easy wood have the mini, mid size and full size set of carbide hollowing tools, the larger the tool the less vibration, also you need to cut exactly on spindle center to reduce or eliminate catches, one more thing if you tilt the head of the tool slightly or up to 45 deg into the cut this will be like sheer scraping and be less catchy and reduce vibration. hope this helps you get back at it take care Rob
Love that olive wood, anxious to try some. Also been seriously considering the 1836, maybe a review? Have they made changes to the indexing pin so you can lock it without making a magnetic insert? All the best from MT
Hello from the UK. I am not a wood turner the last time i used a wood lathe was when i was at school 50 years ago. I have been watching a lot of turning video's just lately and would love to have another go at turning. I think your hollow form is outstanding. Did you have a teacher, or did you learn on your own.Regards Chris.
Hi Chris, my dad was a wood turner so i used to watch him and admire him when i was growing up, turning goes as far back as my great great grandad, I have a bowl that he turned on a faceplate all those years ago, very nice it is too. I joined a turning club and have many turning friends that share ideas, i also watch a lot, and i mean a lot of turners on you tube. It is a great and pleasurable past time. I hope you do give it another shot, youll love it. take care Rob
Hi. Loved that piece. What brand was the chisel you used for the main shaping? I have one and love it but it doesn't have a brand mark. I'd love to get more
English Hampshire sheen on a Canadian vessel? Can it be true? I would love to have a set of those alcohol dyes by Hampshire Sheen. I just know it would make all the difference in my pieces. Fantastic job Rob! Many blessings to you and your family!
Nice bowl! Here in South Africa we have "wild olive," a "common" tree growing just about everywhere. It is the wild form of the "meek olive" and the wood have the same properties, perhaps a little heavier with more figure. I have in my woodshed several large logs, one piece belonging to a tree of at least 1000 years old. The nicest of all wood to turn - smell, texture, finish etc. Unfortunately turned pieces darkens as it age. Regards.

Very nice.... Gorgeous in fact. You do realize I suppose that the head stock slides along the bed. For the hollowing your back will love it.
Thanks for watching, i do know that the headstock slides although it doesn’t swivel, not sure how sliding it would save my back but thanks
Rob
Because with the tail stock removed, your toolrest on or near the end, you can stand at the and hollow without leaning over the bed
ah if the space was there to stand at the end of my lathe I agree, but I dont have the space there, my sharpening station is there, I suppose I could move it
I had the same problem and solved it by making the end table mobile. It really does save my back
