  • A video showing how to install a Victron smart shunt to my Adria Twin camper van. These are useful to keep an eye on your leisure batteries especially if you go off grid.

    Hi Nick, thanks for this, it really helped me unravel the mystery of what all those wires were doing. Followed your guidance and no power to the shunt…. Changed the fuse in the supplied lead all now working!

      Kev glad the fuse sorted the problem. There is nothing more frustrating than something not working when it’s all installed correctly!

    Hi Nick. Great demo of fitting the smart shunt. I find it interesting to monitor what's coming in & out from the solar panel & DC TO DC charger to the lithium battery, I am glad you also fitted the aux cable as I did to the starter battery a lot don't it's so easy now to check the voltage, puts your mind at ease. Great stuff!

    Just an inspired guess,that stray harness in your cab battery area is similar to the one which plugs into the interface box for my tow bar wiring. My harness was added when I had the tow bar fitted, perhaps yours is supplied with the harness or the vehicle had a tow bar previously. On my Ducato (2018) based motorhome the other end plugs into the vehicle lighting harness by the rear axle, near side. There is a large connector there. Another spur goes to the tow bar.

    • @nickharper6436
      @nickharper6436  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeh it could well be, apparently other Adria Twins have the same so it’s obviously meant to be unconnected. I got the vehicle from new so I didn’t have a tow bar previously but it was a factory option so I think your guess is probably right. Many thanks for your comments.

    Really helpful video Nick. It looks like you were able to lay the seat on its back while you were fitting your shunt - were you able to keep seatbelt pretensioner plug connected during the fitting?

      Thanks for the comments. Not for me personally as I left every thing connected and just laid the seat to the rest giving access to the batteries rather than taking to seat completely out of the van.

    Brilliiant video Nick! I have the batterys BMS with app doing this for me, very useful. Can't imagine to be without it now. Cool LPG bottle, can You refill it by yourself? I have two PC10 (10Kg lpg) bottles that looks very similar (composite). In the van i use two steel P11 (11Kg lpg). The PC10's was used all time before and are alot less weight to handle. I have to refill them at specific station where tve staff must do the work or just swap tbem in an 24h automat. (Both P11 and PC10). Keep it up, all the best! /Mattias

      Apparantly there are some garages over here that think you are filling an exchange bottle but once they see it is a safefill bottle hopefully it won’t be a problem. Morrisons supermarket garage are a safefill partner so I no I can fill there. Getting exchange bottles changed here in the ik is getting extremely difficult !

    Great video Nick, a couple of questions, 1) have you thought about lithium? and 2) where did you get your safefill, everywhere seems to be out of stock.
    Thanks

      Hi Duncan, yes I have thought about lithium and will probably go that route once my AGMs are past their useful life. I believe www.marinepowerltd.co.uk might have some in stock. That’s where I got mine from.

    Hi Nick, great video. Just subscribed to your channel. I have a 2020 600 SPB as well so I'm very interested in what you're doing. I'm going to fit the battery monitor so your video was very useful. Can I ask what you mounted the bus bar too? It looked like you screwed it to the battery.

    • @nickharper6436
      @nickharper6436  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike, thanks for subscribing it’s appreciated. So I secured the bus bar and the shunt with double sided 3m sticky pads. Probably the screws you can see on the bus bar are to secure the cover.

    Hi Nick. I am going to do the same upgrade as this. Thanks for a great video. Can I ask the approximate length of the cable used. My campervan has the same electrical setup. Thanks Chris

    • @nickharper6436
      @nickharper6436  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, do you mean the battery cable? If so I bought them pre made up at Halfords. They were about 12” I reckon.

    A helpful video, thank you. Can I ask, how do you find the Bluetooth range? I know what to expect from normal BT devices but some have commented elsewhere this device has a short range for BT.

    • @nickharper6436
      @nickharper6436  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly works ok as far as I’m concerned and I can check the power from the bed at the back of the van and the shunt is under the front seat. It has a signal strength indicator on the app and it’s at full strength when I’m at the back of the van! No problems as far as I’m concerned and I did see those comments myself and did wonder.

    I don’t know if you noticed tho but your starter battery also drains when you turned the lights on the starter battery dropped
    This did it with mine after 8 months I had to change the battery I don’t use the wire anymore to the starter battery I have a battery sense Victron on the starter . Apparently it does this with the starter battery with bad ground 🤷‍♂️ I couldn’t find bad ground so removed the wire fed up of the battery drain
    And yes even with a new battery I tried it drained agsin

    • @nickharper6436

      Thanks for the comments and yes M10. The leads from shunt to battery were bought from Halfords I’ll have a look later

      Thanks again, I installed this following your video today. The seat with the cables attached was a pain, had to find something to perch it on whilst undoing the plate to access the batteries!! I used 16mm cable each 9” long with an M8 one end and an M10 the other. All sorted and working a treat.

    Enjoyed your video Nick. Just about to do the same. Could you please tell me what gauge cable you bought from Halfords and were they made up with the required connections or did you do that yourself. Many thanks.

    • @nickharper6436
      @nickharper6436  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comments Sandy. I think they are 16mm and I had to have a bigger spade connector to allow it to fit the shunt which have M10 bolts on I believe. I got a local dealer to fit the spades as I didn’t want to purchase a crimping tool just for that job. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the info Nick...! What value did you input for battery capacity in the app? Was it for a single battery (e.g. 100 Ah) or X2 batteries 200 AH? Cheers again!

    • @nickharper6436
      @nickharper6436  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put 200ah but aware that I can only use 100ah max to preserve the life of the batteries. I then set the discharge floor to 50%. Hope that helps and thanks for the comments
