It was the closing credits music for "The Heat" (2013) starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. That's when I first heard it and wanted to know who the artist is. She is brilliant.
I figured out what I like about Kimbra. She doesn't fit into a specific style. She uses an array of vocal techniques and sounds and tinkers with a bunch of different styles of song, yet somehow it's all still very much her. So many groups, even groups I like, have such an entrenched sound their sounds get a little... interchangeable. But Kimbra keeps me guessing. I don't always enjoy every song she does, but that's how things go when you experiment. I just like that she doesn't find a formula and lather, rinse, repeat her way through an album or two.
