This song is from the album "Every picture tells a story". The title track is an excellent example of Rod and his band really rocking out. Nothing like his later soft rock, and something I recommend if you want to explore that side of his catalogue. This was hugely popular back in the day.
Maggie May was everywhere in late summer and into the fall in 1971 as I started my freshman year of college. The whole Every Picture Tells A Story album is great and is another one from the amazing year of music 1971. This album has remained in my top 10 favorite records of all time.
When Rod was in The Faces they were known as a "pub rock" band. Hard drinking, girls and football ( soccer) was their thing and they played to the pub sensibilities 9f Britain at the time. They made some banging rock tunes at the time too. Check out "Stay With Me" "Pool Hall Richard" ot "Cindy Incidentally " by them.
An all-time classic. The mandolin near the end adds so much to the song. Great, natural, believable storytelling by Rod The Mod. This is likely his best known and certainly most played radio song. This is the era when Rod was rockin'. My two other favourite songs of his are Tonight's The Night and the pure rocker Stay With Me with his previous band The Faces.
Great song. I was only in my 20s when this came out. Rod is the bomb. A year or two ago, he went out and filled the potholes in front of his home, which didn't please the street dept., but hey, they didn't do it. Imagine a rock star filling pot holes! He is just amazing. ❤

Rod Stewart is a guy well loved in Europe. In the football (soccer) World Cups, when Scotland used to qualify (not for a long time now), he was always one of the stars of the tournaments because of his legendary parties and attending every Scotland game. Really a lovable character.
I was 10 when this came out and it played ALL the time. When I had my daughter at 23 years old, named her Meghann, but we called her, and still call her, Maggie May.
