- This is how you make basmati rice perfectly every single time.
1. Wash your rice in cold water. Do not skip this step.
2. Get your pot heating and add some good olive oil, a clove of garlic (skin and all), star anise, and cardamom pods (pop them open first).
3. Add your washed rice to the pot and sauté it in all those fragrant ingredients for a minute or two.
4. Add room temperature water- not cold water- and bring it up to a soft boil.
5. Cook UNCOVERED for a few minutes until you start to see the rice through the water.
6. Turn down your heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 10 minutes.
7. Once the 10 minutes is up, turn off your stove and cover your pot (lid on) with a towel for 15 minutes. Don't open the lid.
8. Once your 15 minutes are up, plate your rice and serve it paired with your favorite toppings or proteins.
This is one of my no-fail recipes. Just follow the instructions and you'll have perfect basmati rice.

I cook my Basmati rice in cold water and it turns out perfectly light & fluffy every time.
WIIIIIIIIIIIITCHHHHHHHHH
😂jokes aside, same tbh
I wait for the water to boil then put in the basmati rice for about 12 minutes. Perfect everytime. I'll try this frying method when I make a curry dish next time.
Why you just wasting time. Hot water cooks shit faster
Exactly
Me too bro! Easy and fast. Dont forget to wash your rice well
I loved how Persian people making basmati rice with saffron and crispy rice in the bottom, is soooo delicious
Yeh , PERSIAN! Indian cultivated best rice , but Persian cooking the best! No cardamom, no star Annis , no fry Onion , just Safran.
Persian friend makes it so there is a rice crust on the bottom. That is pulled out and broken up. Done by cooking longer?
@@MeragRealmlol Pakistan is made up country. Basmati is native to both pakistan and india
@@donaldkasper8346 no, actually there is a few ways to make it. fastest way is: wash and boil rice in salted water and little bit oil(10 minutes) until almost completely "al dente" then drain the water and oil but keep half a glass. after that put some oil in bottom of pot, rice, make holes so the steam can escape and pour half glass in the holes. wrap towel around lid and put on low medium heat for 30 minutes
you can also put lavash bread or potatoslices on the bottom, its a different kind of tahdig@@donaldkasper8346
Chef, you (and Max Hardy) make me wish I lived in Detroit. Every. Single. Video.

I tried the recipe and can confirm it works ! Holy cow, this is how ill make rice from now on
Aged basmati rice never gets mushy if u use hot or cold water. Here is exactly how u cook it on a gas stove top: one cup rice wash 3 /4 times. Soak for atleast 30 mins. Add it to ur pot. Add 2 cups of water. Add a pinch of salt. If u like aroma add an unopened pod of cardamon ( do not open it/ the taste of cardomom seeds is extremely intense if u bite on it.) A bay leaf and a clove or 2. Put the flame on high till the water comes to a boil. Thn reduce the flame as low as it will go cover the pot and time it for 13/14 mins. Turn of the flame. Done u hav cooked rice. Also remember the rice needs to b fully cooked and shld not hav a bite to it at all. Make sure to loosen the cooked rice with a fork after 5 mins post cooking so it doesn't clump up. Hope this helps.
Nobody asked
Thank you for helping me on this. I’m going to try it. I make rice but never basmati.
Well i asked
💯 This is exactly how I've made basmati for years; bay leaf and cardamom included.
I find it's the leaving it to soak after washing that _really_ improves the texture and makes for fluffy, tender rice.
@@melissaharris3389Hi. Do you cook it in the soak water or drain it and cook it in clean water?
Yup perfect I prefer mine soaked for about 30mins and instead of olive oil I prefer Ghee
Ghee is more traditional, but for the people who don’t have it easily accessible we decided to show it with olive oil
Fantastic. I’m a rice lover and really enjoy Lebanese cuisine. Shookran.
We hope you love it
That's how my Lebanese wife cooks rice. God bless her.

Thank you!!!! I have been struggling with rice that is not instant and almost gave up. You’re a gem.
Rice cookers are a easy cheap alternative also
@@samkolysko1406 but space in kitchen isnt. you cant buy a machinnery for every thing you cook.
Yes the space! I have so many cool things i forget to use because i have a tiny counter. It's a waste of money at this point. I have a rice cooker i never use because im good at cooking rice on the stove. @WalterModel45
@WalterModel45 you can keep your rice cooker somewhere else outside the kitchen, closet, garage, shed, living room, bedroom, under the sink in the bathroom, on a shelf in any of those rooms, if you cant find space make a shelf, or you can make a little rope holder and suspend it from the ceiling, If you cant find space for something that small I think you have worse problems than how to cook rice.
@@samkolysko1406I agree with you. We use our rice cooker almost every day. Just hit the button and forget it. Rice is perfect every time. And it doesn't take up much space. It's an essential appliance IMO.
I grew up in the middle east, and seeing this brings a smile on my face on the memories I had eating this dish. Will take the advice, thank you!
When you know the basics of rice, its one of the most useful and versatile foods. When people say they can't without a rice cooker, it hurts 😭
I put my rice in the rice cooker fill water to the correct line and click the go button. Perfect rice every time. If i feel fancy I'll fry the rice first with the spices to make a jeera rice.
I use cold water and my rice still comes out fluffy it’s really about not opening the top till it’s time to, and letting it rest with no flame. I grew up eating it and learned how to make.
You have really good advice all the time. Appreciated very much.
Thank you for showing us these cooking examples.
This is the way. I turn off my burner rather than to low. Works perfectly every time.
I used a rice cooker and used cold water and perfectly, so his style is just preferences
You can’t go wrong with basmati rice. I love it. So fluffy and light.
50% right
I think you never been in a serious cooking school
Thanks Chef; I’m half Indian so Basmati rice is a staple oftentimes in my kitchen. I needed a tip or two to make mine taste and look better 😊
We hope this helps
wow chef thank you
You’re very welcome
Boy, this blew my recipe out, going to try your way, learning new things at 72, HOOT HOOT😮
Mike knows his shit.
He sure does
I wash mine , soak it for 30MINS while i do the prep and other work , then I have the option to toast it or go straight to boiling , toast it or not , the boil is only 5 minutes time because of the soak . The toast is optional , it continues to break down the starch more which gives the separate grains people have trouble get , and , adds a nutty flavour sort of while bringing out the aromatics of what is in with the rice , spices - onions - garlic and such , i buy the SUPER LONG GRAIN basmati , it is labelled different ways , but the longer the better , makes for amazing rice.
Sounds great
We have the same method. I like a very long grain fluffy white sweet smelling basmati rice to go with well spiced dishes - delicious!
Yeah like hell ..... you add that amount of star anise to that little rice, it will test like liquorice and also biting into cardamom in the middle of eating rice tests really bad so if you want to add spice in your rice please use a cheese cloth.
So as an Indian who eats it daily I will say a very easy recipe for basmati rice ......
1. Use aged basmati.
2. Wash thoroughly and soak in water for 10 minutes.
3. Boil water, add salt to the test, add whole spices (roasted and not too much) like cumin ,cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, star anise in a cheese cloth and add to the water, you can also add a little lemon juice so the rice won't stick to each other.
4. Check the rice looking for your ideal doneness, then strain the excess water.
5. Remove the cheese cloth, cover up the rice in the pot for a few minutes, and your perfect fluffy basmati rice is ready to be served with some curry.
Finally someone who really knows how to cook basmati rice
Thanks
If you have to strain rice of excess water, you've done it wrong. Everything else, spot on.
@@TheWilkenator nahh man....... it's pretty common to strain excess water from basmati rice. Look into any North Indian rice recipe...... even uncle Rodger approves it in the case of Basmati.
Indian here. No need to ' wash' the rice. Cooking rice is super easy. 1 cup rice and 2 cups of water to boil and simmer until water is absorbed. If you have a rice cooker it's even easier. If you are trying to make biryani or fried riceit's way more complex but it's also different spices. I'm not sure what this cook was trying to do😢
Thank you so much for this rice tip.
Looks delicious. A great Recipe. Thank you
Our pleasure
My cook mentor who was chef of the royal family of Persia during the 60s told me that first of all basmati is Persian rice adopted from the Indians when they were on the 10 year war with Iraq . You wash the rice well then you boil it once discard the water put the rice on the lowest heat (talking about a candle) with a towel on the cover for about 20 minutes a d it's ready fluffy for at least five days.
Nobody cooks basmati rice like this in India. And they’re always perfect.
Perfect
Thank you
I rarely wash my rice. I use a microwave. I don't care about perfect. It still tastes great!
DAMN!! I thought you just open the corner of the "Uncle Ben's" microwave pouch and wave for Ninety Second and that was it.
@nineiron.
Ah, "Uncle Ben's" and a microwave...perfect rice everytime..No fuss, No mess.
I am from Detroit but live in Chicago. I want to visit my niece in Hamtramck and eat at your place!
The term "top shelf" comes to mind.
I didn’t realize you needed to wash your rice. Thank you.
You’re very welcome
My new favorite rice for past 6 months
Ours too
What!! Wow.. love basmati!
Chef you are a real one
For those of you who struggle with rice and water ratio you can boil the rice after rinsing in a bunch of water taste test it till it’s 75% done or so (should still have a bite to it) drain the water completely, add a couple tbsps of butter on top after you drain the rice and put it back in. Put the pot on low heat with a kitchen towel under the lid cook for 10 - 15 min and it will steam to perfect done ness also get crispy rice in the bottom like Persian style. Might take you a couple tries to get the timing down depending on how powerful your stove is. If you smell burning rice it was either too hot or too long. This was how a friends mom told me how to do it the Persian way. Try it out. Be careful of the kitchen towel you use so it doesn’t catch fire on the stove. I’ve tried it without the towel and just a lid and it worked fine also. Here’s another tip don’t stir your rice. While boiling or when your doing the last step. For basmati rice only. Don’t try with short grain.
Nice technique
We Puerto Ricans LOVE the crispy bottom rice, we call it pegao.
If you're middle eastern or south asian descent then this is really the only way to make rice!
I made it exactly as you say, just added bit of turmeric for color! Separately i ve made carrots, red and green peppers, peas and sweet corn. I mixed it all and omg. All near some chickpeas omelette, cuz i am a vegan. I added spring onion and fresh green garlic on top n bit of garam masala. Omg! Will make this rice forever! N eat it with all good stuff!😊 wish i could show you how extraordinary it looks like n taste!
Will try it thanks

I strongly recommend to buy a rice cooker😊
It was so good, he couldn’t even wait until the end of the video to eat It. 😂
15 mins in the microwave w/a tbsp of apple cider vinegar. Water level 1-2 inches above the rice with lid. PERFECTION everytime!!!!❤
A CULINARY MAGICIAN!!! LOVE IT!
I’m saving this vid! I know those flavors are amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Saving this in Food playlist, and I don't know when I'm going to make them.
There are so many different ways, why the heck should we believe that this is perfect.
South African Indian here. I wash the rice about 4 times to rinse off the excess starch. Then I top up the pot about 3 inches above the rice level with cold water. Add salt, 2 bay leaves, 2 cracked cardamom pods, 2 cinnamon sticks, a teaspoon of whole cumin seeds. And the most important thing is either 2 tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice. This doesn't make the rice sticky so it cooks separately. Then bring to the boil which I usually do on high heat, and checking after 15 minutes of rapid boiling for the softness. The water will reduce and absorb, and the salt obviously leeches out some starch in the rice. Once the rice is soft enough, I add about 300ml of cold water to stop the cooking and stir to lift out the starch. Cover with the lid and drain it out like you do with pasta if you have no colander
Yoo kaant do daat! I😂
Thank you
Thank You, Chef
Anytime
Thanks, imma try this soon
Happy cooking

I've tried this rice several times from different restaurants and so far I'm not a fan. However, I am a fan of the channel. It's great content and like many others it makes me wish I lived in Detroit!
I love my rice cooker
Absolutely love your videos!!🙏🏻🍀
Love to hear it
This is a serious chef. Is like Gordon Ramsay V2
I think I can cook this rice now
The hardest part for me is getting my electric stove to actually behave like I want it to - just lowering the heat to Low doesn't change anything for a good few minutes, because the stovetop's burner surface is still holding on to the residual heat, and it won't dissipate for a while. The only other solution on an electric stove is to use 2 burners, one for each stage, but even that is kinda fraught, cos it's hard to gauge how warm the low burner is for stage 2.
Looks bomb! I’ve never had this type of rice before.
Your recipe is amazing
Beautiful dish !
I use homemade stock instead of water chef I think it really enhances the flavor
I'll give it a go :)
Let us know how it turns out
Yes boss🎉 okay, deliciosooo rice
