I've been a fan of Jake's since I heard him speak about his life, Iraq and hurricane Katrina way back in '05. Super-smart young man, without a doubt. We've chatted online a few times over the years since, and he remains true to his ideals-- which is only right. Wonderful Q&A with a wonderful young man.

The act of copying does not deprive the original owner of their property, but it can in bulk deprive them of its scarcity. The law of supply and demand sets the value of something that has infinite supply at a very low level.

Just as Ghandi said - be the change you want to see in the world. So I suppose we could make a change and stand up for ourselves... I think it´s about time that all people start taking care of themselves and others, for the sake of the community, and not just wait for brave ones to do that for us :)

So if someone has a house, and you make a copy of that house, are you depriving them of their original house?

Megaupload probably doesn't have "a" illegal file, like I'm sure TH-cam does in comparison, but legions, and which is probably dealt less properly with than TH-cam does. That's all I'm saying.

@JeremyVisser considering i only moved it once or twice i dunno what you're going on about :P then again, i think you'd prefer that than having the subject of the interview more out of frame completely, right?

Software cost a lot before pirating on any large scale was physically possible. The price of some things has gone up, but so has the complexity/labor in piece of software compared to 10-15 years ago.
There doesn't appear to be a logical step in your argument though, if i pirate photoshop for example, according to you, the price will go up. What if i used a competition software instead (gimp?) does using a competitors product push up the price too? Is this how we know the market works? Consider.

Also the "billions" are misleading because they assume that every pirated copy of something would have otherwise been purchased. This is definitely not the case. And would also mean that you could say "free and open source software" decreases workers earnings and tax revenue. Getting a copy of Ubuntu costs Microsoft nearly $300 and costs the government tax revenue. That is why the cost of windows has gone up since Windows 95.

You can not prove your first assertion. Netflix for example has had a negative effect on bittorrent in the US. People will pay for things if it is convenient and not overpriced. Raising the prices on something that gets pirated a lot will only ever lead to more piracy as you cut more customers out of your demographic market. You didn't answer my question though, do you think that using Gimp, competition to PS will cause the price of PS to go up?

Good point. I project myself as austrian too. But what are we going to do about it? Make things less plentifull or more plentifull. Wait a minute - what was the market role anyways?
What I think we have here is on one hand huge monopolies in industry done with hands of government which trying to spy on me at he same time. Both forces add multiply themselves.
Artis should learn from Louis C.K. They could play and wait for voluntary appreciation. It has been shown it works :D

@hjf3022 Also wondering if your theory of potential buyers and earnings applies to tangible stuff, like food in a grocery store for example.

1:12 silly argument. Other people upload files to the hoster - like say other people give (or return [possibly altered]) videos to the videostore, and if the videos accepted are childporn and are distributed all over the place, of course the videostore must go down (especially if it keeps on doing these "mistakes" without properly handling the problem).

@hjf3022 @hjf3022 Can I ask, do you pirate and why? Are you doing it for the greater good or b/c you're poor. Or is it simply b/c you can? Just curious.

I'd have to disagree that copyright is not theft. They are stealing the intellectual property. We developed software and sold license to use it in someone's business. A large corporation just took the software refusing to pay us any longer and rolled out to another subsidiary while thumbing their nose at us. I'm sorry... but they were stealing from us. We had to sue them, which we won. Yes, they could have gone to jail for maliciously depriving us our income by stealing our software.

@thesincerenet Same thing happens to TH-cam all the time mate !.
why dont they take down youtube ?.
How many times have you not seen the DMCA used here on TH-cam ?
If Megaupload had an illegal file, all they had to do was to file DMCA complaint and the content would be removed, just like other sites.
my question is why Megaupload why not Rapidshare ? why not youtube why not fileserve ?.
listen every page handles the DMCA the same way. u file DMCA claim they take it down.

You may have a HD camera and a bokeh background, but it still looks very camcorder. Stop panning the damn camera when he so much as bats an eyelid!

"theft - the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny."
Whatever your moral stance on copying software and using it without a liscence is it does not change the definition of theft. Call it something else but do not call it theft, calling it piracy is even more ridiculous.
