  • After five months of dedication to the Back 40 for Mark Kenyon, every corner of the property is connected to a lesson. Luckily, there’s still one more chance to capitalize on everything learned this year. Joining Mark for the final hunt of the season is MeatEater’s conservation director Ryan “Cal” Callaghan, and his good friend Anna Borgman, a first-time hunter who grew up in a small town in Oregon. Anna is a part of a program called the Good Meat Project where she teaches butchering classes and promotes an honest approach to eating farm-raised meat. In the final episode of season one, Cal and Mark show Anna the ropes.

    This was a fun series!
    Regarding starting small engines...They can be moody and difficult. But from my lawnmower engines on mud motors to my old 2 stroke Tundra snowmachine, my dad's system seems to work pretty good, especially in cold weather or when the machine hasn't been run for a while and the fuel has a ways to travel before it gets to the cylinder.
    Make sure all the fuel valves are open, if the particular machine has them. Leave the kill switch turned off, and pull the engine over a few times. Don't just rip the cord either, get it engaged first then pop it. When it's a very cold snowmachine, I give it as much as 10-15 pulls or until it loosens up, you can tell by how easy or hard it pulls. When it's just a cold engine that hasn't run, maybe a half a dozen pulls to engage the fuel pump (if so equipped) and get fuel moving. After the warm up pulls, if the engine isn't equipped with a primer give it full choke and pull it a few times with the switch still turned off. If it does have a primer, give it a few pumps (you'll feel the fuel flowing, there'll be minimal resistance if the system is dry or not functioning) and turn on the switches and give her a yank. Again, don't just rip the cord, slowly pull it out a bit until you fell the recoil engage. This is also how I've come to start my Stihl chainsaws, other brands might start easier.
    Again, I'm enjoying all the TH-cam series, thanks for putting them out, be safe out there!

    I psych'd up and worked as an "anatomical specialist" at the Baylor College of Medicine prosecting, for art and science, in the mindset of Leonardo, learning what made people look like they do. Dead bodies, however, still cause a shiver down my spine and I'm only beginning to think of processing game as a part of my life to come. I have never hunted in my life but watching meat eater on Netflix and then finding this channel on TH-cam has made me want to experience it. The reason i want to go hunting is the respect that is given to the land and animal. I am 44 years old hope it not to late for me. Thank you meat eater cast for showing me there is more to my food than a pre- wrapped package.

      When you started, did you do similar to what they did in this episode? Just sight in your rifle and set out to hunt like they did for Anna? I ask because I always assumed the process to going from sighting in your gun to actually going hunting was a much more long, drawn out process than this in which one goes to the range a ton before, but that's coming from someone new and her position. Would you recommend I copy this method, or practice a ton first before I go? Please let me know since it would be a HUGE help! I'm new to the sport and eager to learn!

    • @jhilliard4700
      @jhilliard4700 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrypacheco1002 So sorry I missed this comment months ago! I actually started deer hunting with a bow, which meant I did a ton of research about what to buy, practiced (and got help at archery stores) for a full year, and started hunting in my second year. That first year of actual hunting (sitting in my own tree stands on 30 acres) was valuable, but I didn't get a deer (a big doe) until my third year. I still mainly hunt with a compound bow, but I have also gotten two deer with a 30-06 rifle. Turning yourself into a hunter takes time - I would not rush it and it isn't simple (in my opinion) to do it right. Huge luck to you.

    Love the show and everyone involved in MeatEater. Not to be critical, just truthful. Having a new hunter on and someone wanting to learn to hunt, teach them how to hunt (prepare, track, evaluate the signs, shoot at different angles, a deer's body language, wind, the terrain). Not just go sit in a tent and shoot a deer when it walks out. ...She seems like a very nice woman (Thumbs up to Ryan), but you kinda tossed her under the bus. For being a butcher, she certainly looked like "a deer in the headlights" when you asked her to show you two some butchering tips..Again guys, love the shows, just being truthful..thanks for the all your efforts and look forward to future videos. Keep on trucking, Flint

    It was cool to see Anna be upbeat after coming up empty handed. That’s like a right of passage for a new hunter, along with a missed shot or two and getting busted by the wind. I hope she continues to hunt and appreciate the difficulty of hunting, as well as the skills she’ll no doubt develop as she overcomes those difficulties. I would have liked a bit more from the butchering end though, with some more tips or pointers on which cut is which. It would be cool to get that info while seeing her cut those out. Still, love the series.

    One of the primary tensions of the show (and akin to what Leopold addressed in his writings) is how and for what purpose do we manage a small individual acreage in an ecologically fractured land base. Duren brought this up when he asked what the ultimate "time frame" for the project was. Do you manage this small land area for multiple "trophy" bucks or do you manage it in a way that somewhat mimics what "Nature" would do in the absence of humans. (A salient question: What would the density of mature bucks be per section (640 ac) in this ecosystem if it was not impacted by humans?) I hope Mark determines and elucidates his primary goal for this piece of the planet. I sincerely admire what this team is striving to explore: How do we become responsible, non-selfish, multi-generational stewards of this land (including human consumptive use of the resource base) in a legal, cultural, and economic system that fosters and rewards a world view that places primacy on relatively short-term human needs. Please keep asking the questions and exploring potential answers. It's important.

      Well put

    • @handcannon1388
      @handcannon1388 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Part of your statement doesn't apply. It is impossible to equate the carrying capacity of the land here with that of untouched wilderness; even for the subgroup of "mature bucks". The land here is either uninhabitable by deer (covered by roads, buildings, etc) or made up of agricultural fields with small patches of woods, waterways, and wetlands mixed in. It has already been irretrievable altered from the beech, oak, maple forests that likely predominated this part of the state when settlers arrived; before they had an impact on the ecosystem. Which is good for deer hunters, since the deer population in Michigan alone likely exceeds that of the entire country back in colonial days.
      That being said, management for a large number of trophy bucks would likely center on harvesting more does and cull-bucks, and simply letting those bucks with promise live to be 4 1/2 years or older. That is something that simply cannot be done without the cooperation of pretty much all of the landowners within a couple square miles. My best advice would be to farm it, while leaving quality bedding cover and providing some late-season food plots for the deer's use. Harvest some does and odd-antlered "culls" and let the promising bucks pass. Every few years you will likely get a good buck; provided that you do everything right.

  • @rmcfar8818
    @rmcfar8818 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would be interesting to see an aerial view of the property and talk about why the trails/ plots were cut where they were cut and why. Which forage was planted in different sections and why. Where were the stands hung and why? So on and so forth.

      There really isn't much difference between the deer and the rest of the animals - except they feed and water themselves and you have to wait for them to show up in order to harvest them. This year my father took a nice 6-point about sixty yards from the barn it got hung up in (until I could process it) and I took one a couple years back about fifty yards from the freezer it was destined for. Just try to remember to balance the harvest, make a quick, clean kill, and take no more than you will use.

    Hanging? We use this trough-looking apparatus. Lay the animal on the back. Ring the legs, cut the hide, ring the forelimbs (this eliminates bone shards), have the hind hanging off the trough a bit: the weight helps expose the ball joints to get the hams off. Cut the shoulders off. Roll over stomach down, and trim out the backstrap. Remove the head. Done.

    Is there an extended version of this? Seems like you could re-cut the footage into a more detailed butchering. Would love to see it.

    Great episode. Do you have a recipe to share for that boned out shoulder loin? I did this recently with a front shoulder - any recommendations are helpful :) Thank you!!

    Reminds me of my families property out here in eastern Washington state. We lost almost everything to the Hart road fire granted, but your statement of "theres a lot more work to be done and for little payoff" is too true. Mother nature is a very tough bitch. Awesome to see how you utilize your neck of the woods guys.

    Another good source for butchering game is YT channel Scott Rea. He’s a butcher by trade. I’ve learned a lot from his channel.

    First timers: don't try a front roast like that! It is a piece that needs a meat magician. Please, have Rinella do a couple magical things with that tied front roast! A tied up front roast like that with all the silver skin on it will be the last venison dinner most first timers will ever try. Have Rinella redeem that puppy!! #unnecessarygamey

    I don’t understand why someone would fly to another state to hunt but only allow yourself a couple days.

    I only wish I could afford to own a piece of land like this. Until then, this is a great way to learn how others do it.

      Series seems to have disappeared. Weren't they filming this year; with a guest-hunt to be featured? Weren't they also holding a drawing for the title to the Farm? An update would be appreciated.
