Seeing Cora's wounds remind me of pictures I saw of a dog attack on a horse. Exactly the same places too. You would think they would look like bites but they didn't. They looked like cuts and tears, I suppose as the skin is so thin.
I know it wouldn't be your dogs, but could have a wild/loose dog got onto the property?
I do hope Cora recovers soon. It was great of Mark to come so quickly.
I was gonna ask about a dog bite also.(And yes their dogs wouldn't do that) and the camera is a good idea.

Poor Cora! I'm so glad that Mark was able to go and take a look at her while you were out of town. I'm so happy that the vet was able to stitch her up and provide what you need and to know to help her recover! I didn't realize that bison will also forage on scrub brushes until now. Poor Brooke got sneezed on. 😘

@@zabavnaya-xt8tb Mark is Dusty's and Marisa's friend. He knew that they were looking for horse so when he found Cora he gave them a call. He is also helping Dusty train Cora. He just a real good friend. As far as Eli he works on the ranch, he might help out at the cabins I am not sure.

Cora is a dun buckskin. The toughest horses I’ve ever know were her markings and colors. DMSO4 is also a good solution for wounds that can’t be sewn up due to age of injury. It promotes granular tissue growth which is desired. Sending Cora my prayers.
Yes, Cora is a spectacular golden beauty.! So Buckskins are one of the toughest breeds? Many years ago a friend who is a “horse person” and I were out driving around our countryside and spotted a place that had a sign : “Melody Mount at Stud” She got very excited and told that the “Stud” must be of the line of the famous “Music Mount,” Champion Buckskin Stallion. After that I really paid attention when driving by, hoping to catch a “glimpse of gold” in the pasture..Thanks to Dusty for sharing his golden Cora. I hate to think of what she must have encountered to tear her up like that. She sure is sweet and patient about the hydotherapy treatments.❤

Praying for Cora to heal quickly. Something came after her. Maybe Coyote or possibly wild pigs? As for the Pecans call Daniel to come over one day with his fancy new equipment to clear away those cedars and brush to afford that Pecan tree to grow and give loads of pecans. Dusty, so sorry Cora was injured. Happy she has been to the Vet, stitched and on meds. She is one of the sweetest horses I have seen in awhile. Thank you for sharing this so we can pray for quick healing and no trauma related issues. ❤

Poor Cora. She’s such a beautiful girl. Hope she heels fast. Poor Brook getting spit and had to have a chuckle. At lease he was insuring that it was ok. ❤
Keep your eyes open for preditor sign. A larger cat would stay clear of the bison and go for the horse. We raised lots of ponies and horses. Had a few get injured on a nail that worked out of siding on barn. Also had a big cat attack our horses. They ran through electric fence and got away. Only to have one get hit on roadway. It was a foggy morning. I suspect preditor because of both sides of chest and hind leg injuries.
@deborahratcliff8179 that's what I was asking too. Usually the vet can look at a wound and say if it was an attack or something else. 😊
Have you thought of placing a camera on the building inside Cora's corral?

Having managed a thorobred ranch, she'll heal but like you said it's just a matter of time. The biggest thing is keeping it clean and the flies away.

OMG! You're having lots of "first times" this summer. SO glad you are part of a caring community and relationships so you all have each other's back in times of need. She's such a good girl, and showing you her character that you will be able to count on when you start riding her among the bison.
Maybe you should have a couple of security cameras up to keep an eye on the place when you are not there
As you are finding out, horses are fright/flight, it could have been anything. My sister's horse last year, ran through the wooden fence. He has heard and seen this tractor a million times. He impaled himself, just missed both branches of his Juglar vein, it took both vets and their assistant over an hour to remove the chunk of wood. I said all that to say this, today you can't tell where that wound was. He is right as rain. You hate to see them hurt.

Poor Cora! It’s always amazing how a horse can get injured when you think the stables look so safe! These things always happen, even to the best of us! Too bad you don’t have a mobile vet that will come see you! That’s what we have. Maybe you can find one now. Good luck with that. She will be fine! You’re still a great farmer!
Put up camers
You can bubble wrap a horse and pad there stalls and they will still hurt themselves. Amazing what they can get in.
@jackielowe2895 Truth! Our mare had a 14 inch long, 6 inch deep laceration on her shoulder...never did figure out how she did it. Nothing in the paddock that she could have caught it on as far as we could see. Thankfully she healed sound, wicked scar but she's fine.
@@blip-2024 In that case, could it be people who have access to the stables? If the wound was lower down I would have suspected it was from an animal. Agree on putting up cameras.

Maybe she was trying to get away, I suggested a donkey for company and protection.
So sorry this happened to Cora. As a horse owner for about 30 years, I can say these things happen when you least expect it, especially with young horses. They get "frisky" and run and buck unaware of the hazards until its too late (even in the pens they're raised in). Look around the fencing and pipes and look for clumps of her hair and possibly her hide. She's young and will heal up well. I love her gentle, calm disposition. That probably kept her from getting hurt worse. She's a wonderful first horse for the family.
Hydrotherapy is the absolute best , I have had some awful cuts over the years with my horses .unless you can bubble wrap them they will find ways . Also unpasteurized honey works amazing .
I have a question about the honey. Does the honey attract flies? I’m an RN. I’ve put honey on patients wounds and it works wonders aiding healing by stopping bacteria growth. I’ve used it on open horse wounds a couple of times during the winter, and It worked well. I’ve been reluctant to use it during warm weather.
I’ve used it in summer and it did not attract flies . I have had horrible wounds heal up beautifully with honey ( I am fortunate my dad and brother have bees ) I am also an RN and in the times when the wounds stitches did not hold the healing power of the honey and hydrotherapy was amazing
@@emeraldappaloosas Thanks did the reply. Timing is perfect. I went to show a pretty dun weanling filly to a buyer today only to find she had sliced her Pastern. I’m going to try the honey on her. Ironically, my wife calls her Honey, lol!!

We finally got some good rains this last week, we were as dry as you have been. Still praying that you get plenty of rain to help out. Lots has been going across Texas and Oklahoma as well as other states. Could use more, but it's too wet to mow. Thank God!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Oh my goodness! This year has been the series of unfortunate events for yall! I'm glad Cora is going to be okay.
This is one reason we had not only cold but hot water plumbed in for outside use. It is so nice to wash animals, and cars with warmer water. Prayers for all. When growing up our neighbors dog chased my mare into the fence. It took 35 sutures to close her up. Back then we also used Scarlet Oil. Well she broke open those sutures but healed without nary a scar. Right in the same area as Cora!

When I was doing hydrotherapy, the water stream was much gentler, not a hard stream. Just the hose on with no nozzle and letting it flow over the stitches so to didn’t do more damage to the area.

Dusty when Longhorn Lester’s male dominant goat was attacked they coyotes came back to finish him off the next night. Please be vigilant with Cora she’s so precious n loves your family so much!

You can't beat yourself up over things like what happened to Cora. I once had a filly that was accident prone. I swear she'd find some random bit of wire or a nail or maybe even just a sharp rock and bleed every couple of months. Sweetest and easiest to train horse I ever had, but geez that girl could hurt herself in a padded room. You can't remove every single threat in the world. Same goes for your own children. You do the best you can and try to be prepared when that isn't enough. Having good friends goes a long way too. Shoutout to the good friends! I hope Cora heals well and doesn't make a habit of this sort of thing.
I had a yearling filly border years ago who cut herself up in the same spots as Cora. Very tender, vascular areas. My vet came out and stitched her up, and I tended to her for a week. She healed up beautifully, and I’m sure Cora will too. Cora sure is a gorgeous gal.
