    Those are Mud dauber wasps aka "dirt daubers". They are a solitary species, are quite docile in nature, and rarely sting. Even though they aren't super aggressive, they can deliver a painful sting and their venom is strong enough to trigger an allergic reaction in some people.

    • @AMMO-NYC

      Thank you. Was going to say I saw something very similar on my bike after it was sitting in the garage for a few years. I thought it was mud but when I went in to break it, I realized it was a wasps nest (The wasp that flew above it and went into the walls helped me deduce this as well).
      Oh and yes their stings do hurt (Didn't see them sleeping and accidentally pushed down on one with my finger)

    • @munkydotorg
      @munkydotorg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Will find their mud nests every down here (North Carolina). Never been stung by one. I'll leave that to the wasps and a yellow jackets to do!

    • @MRiddickW
      @MRiddickW 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, where I lived growing up (North Texas), you had to be careful to wrap/box anything you're storing for any amount of time, because dirt daubers will make their nests in the MOST annoying place. I was using my wood planer for the first time in several years, and step one was open it up and knock the nests out.

    • @peterpearce8489
      @peterpearce8489 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Mud daubers actually eat spiders. If you ever crack open one of those nests, you see a bunch of white spiders that are paralyzed by the daubers venom. Fascinating!

      Engineering marvels, for sure. I'm an aviation tech apprentice, and we always bring up how insane the engineers have designed some of these aircraft. Like every single thing has been accounted for, we have a 727 in our fleet of (to be restored) planes, and It's still in incredible shape almost 30-40 years later. A few more years and it will be back in the skies once more.

Was also museum certified to clean artwork paintings etc. I Understood your excitement in the challenge you accepted in cleaning, restoring and sanitizing the 401. Again great job. At 6:56 you're asking what those dirt globs were on the curtains.. Those are mud dobbers nests. Some people call them "mud wasps" they roll up little balls of mud around mud puddles or along creek banks or rivers, anywhere they can get mud at the right consistency. They take the little pea sized ball holding it with their mouth parts and fly to their place they've picked and start forming a nest. They vibrate the mud as they shape it to get it to bond well. You can hear them doing it from 20 or 30 feet away. Sounds like a bee stuck between something trying to escape but it's just these pesky little mud dobbers making their nest where you don't want them to. So when they get the nest almost ready to lay eggs, they leave the holes open and they go hunting for spiders to provide food for the larva when they hatch. They catch little green spiders usually and sting them. The sting doesn't kill them but just stuns them. They pack the holes with them, lay their eggs and seal them up with mudd. Not sure how long it takes them to hatch but it's within the same summer. Airplane people HATE THEM! They can cause serious problems when they build them in the wrong places. They like the insides of electric motors like on air compressors and they love the cooling fins on air cooled engines like airplanes have. My brother in law said his dad would drop whatever he was doing to chase down and kill them if they flew in his shop where he worked on airplanes. The young return to the same place the next season to build in the same area so its a good idea to not let them build. Sorry for the long explanation on mud dobbers... lol they're just very common around here in kansas too. But now you know! Lol

    I kinda got hooked on watching your show and the entire clean up of the "Bird Hauler". After all of the good vibs I got, there were only two points that stuck in my mind. The first one was that when I heard you say"If I get it running, it will be mine." I am sure you got all of the written agreements required to make it so......secondly, regarding the massive clean and polish job that you did, and I could feel the rush of good feelings you had when you first saw the plane in all of it's splendor, was the slam in the face of the first thing you saw of the inside was the filthy door step. Aside from that, I really enjoyed following your story and I look forward to future updating programs. God speed. LP

    Pretty nice, i detailed private aircraft for 10years for the oil industry, ive seen all kinds of dirty prop planes as well. This was by far the dirtiest interior ive seen. I know with aircraft youve got to know your limits, whats dirty and whats damaged on leather interiors could be pretty hard to differentiate so you have to know your limits. Wonderful job. I miss the industry.
