    Watching thi episode of Jimmy's World Jan 28, 2023, seven months after it was first aired. Seeing that wonderful airplane being made air ready I was reminded of my childhood watching EVERY episode of "Sky King". The Cessna 310B was the airplane that made our young hearts skip beats and for sure influenced a great many young people become pilots. Most very likely joined the United States Air Force and hoped to qualify for flight school. Those who could not settled for airplane mechanic school. Thank you for this amazing episode.

    Once a spark plug misfires, a carbon track is created to ground and even though its cleaned, that carbon track will be a default path for the spark to travel because its easier than jumping an air gap. Rule of thumb is once a plug, plug wire, distributor cap or magneto cap causes a misfires, replace it because it will always be prone to doing so !

    Best episode ever. Love the attention to detail with the engines. See.. Oily spark plugs are not so bad. Most 310 owners I chatted with say don't use 12 quarts of oil the engines just spit out 3 of them very quickly. 3000 miles at 8 miles a gallonseems average..... So less than 400 gallons at less than 8 bucks a gallon figure to less than cheaper than 2400 for fuel one way.... That is a sense of economy in less than 4 days.
    We 310 owners love our planes...notice it doesn't sound like sky King. It really humms.
    Glad you can throw 104 k at a 310... I'm trying to doing at less than 2k a month. Love your work... This episode made you look smarter than many before... I have much more respect for your efforts after watching it. Thank and..SAVE THE 310!

      Interesting point about the Sky King program. For aircraft sound the producers used a beefy radial multi, perhaps a B-25, maybe a Grumman Mallard or a Beech 18?..the Mallard I heard on takeoff was very close to typical Sky King sound bites used and the show largely used the same sounds on much of the T-50 shows as the 310B shows. So with this I love the classic bark augmenter hum they didn't use. The 50's 310's had Cary Grant looks and with 2 blade props, the voice too but that is just me. I hope Jimmy's '56 probably "A" model can keep those props therefore its original voice!

    • @Britcarjunkie
      @Britcarjunkie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To put that fuel figure into perspective, I drive a semi truck for a living: a week ago, I ran from Brunswick, GA., to Bremerton, WA. I spent about $5K on fuel. 928 gallons. I averaged 3.23mpg, partially due to idling the truck everywhere (hey, it was hot and humid!), not to mention I had a 41,000lb load, and went over several mountain passes.
      So, the fuel consumption on the 310 isn't bad!

    you two doing the "can I get a clear prop" together was absolutely hilarious. I was under the impression that the 310 had been sitting for over a year and therefore was out of annual. Quick story. I've got a 310 that hasn't flown in years. Dad passed away last year. I've gotten 2 other airplanes sold and flown. Now the 310 which has been in our lives for over 25 years. I've got a lot to do and I'm hopeful I can get it going. Letting it go after letting the others go would be too much. I owe it to my dad's legacy to get his baby back in the air again. Polish up that aluminum and she will have such "WOW" power when people see it at airshows, not to mention how much easier it will be to to spot her amongst a bunch of painted airplanes. I am super-excited for you that you got her. The sound of those engines coming up to power and taking off . . . Sure brings me back to some great times earning my ratings in GA. I need to get flying again and you inspire me to do it. Also, a shout-out to Silas. He's getting really good at his video skills. When I first joined the USAF, the first engine AKA prime mover, was a 6-banger Continental engine for my AGE job in 1978. USAF had many power units and air conditions with these engines in them till the mid-1980s. Fun to watch the engine work and in my head knowing what you are doing and what you edited out some steps. I remember watching reruns of Sky King flying his 310B. I always as a kid got him confused with The Flying Doctor. Another TV series in the 50s. You were talking about why the military won't let enlisted personnel fly. A SAC general is quoted as saying, said before I joined, that only officers should be on combat aircraft. One reason why they removed the gunners from the B-52s after the D models. However, gunners proved to see SAMS coming from behind that the W/Os could not pick up until it was too late to put out countermeasures. Now with that, let's talk about AC-47 Spooky and AC-135 Spector gunships. Another general said officers should not be doing manual labor on an aircraft that an enlisted man should be doing. So, this is why there are enlisted loaders on combat aircraft.

  • @michaelmartinez1345
    @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    This was a great episode !!! The bad (shorted) batteries probably overloaded the alternator charging circuits , and caused the circuit breaker to trip. This solves what caused that to happen.... The fouled plugs were probably caused by the oil and soot build-up from numerous start-ups, without flying the plane to get the carbon and soot out of the combustion chambers... My guess, is those cylinders on the R/H engine, need some honing, to help seat the piston rings... That just might do the trick, to stop the oil consumption on that engine. In fact after the rings seat properly, and reduce the combustion blow-by, that overheating issue just might go away, because of the reduced flow of super heated combustion gas's traveling into the crankcase, from the combustion chambers, because of blow-by. The cylinder honing trick works wonders on several types of reciprocating engines... It was nice seeing that camio of Juan Browne, when Jimmy was in the NorCal area to make the initial purchase of that plane... I did not realize that Jimmy's son was with him throughout the video, doing the filming... Jimmy's son now has something really cool to talk about, of what he did on the summer vacation!!!!

    • @J.R.in_WV
      @J.R.in_WV ปีที่แล้ว

      Honing a cylinder that’s already allowing oil past the rings and over-pressurizing the crank-case then re-installing the same piston and rings that came out of it can only increase the severity of the problem. If it’s a well-worn engine you may be able to do a hone-job and play with filing down the ends on oversized rings to get your end-gaps right but you can only do that to make up for a few thousandths before you end up breaking rings and or ring lands on the pistons because the rings are pressed too tight against the bore and fit too loosely on the piston.

      Near me someone had a Morgan Plus 4 he restored slowly, and in between, just to have something on it, they brush-painted it with aluminium paint, so was totally matt.
      That looked surprisingly good, almost thought they should leave it that way.
      But a matt surface is rough, so collects dirt easier, and humidity can penetrate the surface easier.

    After owning a 1961 310F model for 8 years, I’d be more concerned about over wing corrosion from the exhaust. The Continental limit on oil usage (without leaks) is about 1 quart per hour. Best advice would be to borescope the cylinders first. Finally, get a good look at the gear linkage, that is the weakest part of a 310. Good engines, and no corrosion means that you can invest some money into it without being too upside down. Good luck.
