As I was watching, though I can’t finish watching this morning, I was able to understand that Jesus was referring to the disciples of that day. It’s important to remember the context ...but also the time in which He says these things. The disciples of Jesus in that day were persecuted, therefore they were hungry, poor, weeping, and discriminated against. Jesus brought good news that they would be rewarded in heaven with all the world tried to strip away from them. Today, Our Saviour has overcome the world, Him dying on that cross has given us victory. The world may war against us, but who can stand against the King of Kings and Lord or Lords...no one. Peace be with you 🙏🏾💓

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (February 13, Epiphany 6), Luke 6:17-26 was our Gospel of the Day.

    Acts 3:25-26 KJVS
[25] Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. [26] Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
    Galatians 3:14 KJVS
[14] That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Looking forward to parts 2 and 3 as this sets them us nicely. Knowing John Piper it'll probably end up being more!

I am not a religious know it all lol but adore Jesus and passionate about His truth .I just question the version used for the beatiitudes.
Concerning being poor and the other one being hungry .
Poor is being poor in spirit as written in most versions including kjv and also hungry , it's not a physical hunger as described in this version it's about hunger and thrust for righteousness which we shall be filled .
The being poor and being hungry is a spiritual need and not a physical need .
At the end of the day it's not about the flesh it's about the spirit .
    God bless all

I rarely disagree with Piper, but if the hungry are disciples based on context then the full who get no future reward would be also. I don't see that being true with other scripture. While it is true that Luke doesn't have to match the Matthew 5 Beattitudes, in this case that seems to be a better interpretation because it holds the test of unity within and with other scripture.

I see what you mean, I've thought of these passages as parallel accounts as well... But after all these years of following John Piper, I think he deserves we hold off our judgement till he's done with the series... Being poor and being poor in spirit are widely different things after all... And the woes in Luke's passage seem to suggest that Jesus is talking about material wealth, while it is clearly not material wealth in Matthew's account...

So having watched the video, I wouldn't say it's about the kind of people God blesses. Piper is saying that's more Matthew's beatitudes. The point is what blessings are on the people of God already who may be poor, hungry, weeping and/or persecuted.

Hi Esekia I read your comment , I would say no, your church cannot make you do anything, it is up to you and God, God looks at whats inside the person , not rituals.. It comes from the heart, Have a relationship with Jesus,

Lucifer shall bless you all if you only believe. Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Lucifer is god. His kingdom is soon coming I hope you all are ready. Repent of your sins and renounce yahweh/yahoshua/jehova.
