@Jeffrey Cotton I do believe in free will, but your actions also have consequences and sometimes those consequences affect and harm other people that aren't yourself and I feel you do not have the right to unnecessary actions that will more often than not directly lead to the harm of another person. Free will means we can't stop you from knowingly going into an area restricted for being dangerous despite all of the posted warnings, the consequences of breaking into the restricted area being if you get stuck or killed now you've put a completely unrelated person that isn't you at risk of injury or death because they now have to go in to rescue you or retrieve your body. Just having laws and regulations in place to keep people alive and safe is not communism. There's a huge difference between, say, making it illegal to say something negative about your leader and saying you can't jump the fence at the amusement park because the ride can and will knock your head off.
Or else we'd have gills! Plus, just snorkeling in Hawaii around small sharks and aggressive Barracuda's, I was very humbled to be in THEIR domain! And, I thought to myself, "'it would serve your fish eating ass!"
I think when it comes to certain situations in diving, being an expert will only get you so far. Becoming hypoxic in a dangerous situation can render decades of experience useless in minutes if not seconds.

It's kinda freaky reading about the death of someone that you knew. Kent Maupin and Mark Brashier were actually from Pasadena, Tx. I went to school with them at Sam Rayburn High School. I remember hearing about their deaths and how shocked I was. It's been 40 years since I got that phone call and I can still remember where I was and who I was with. We were told that there was a cave in and they were trapped and basically just had to wait until their oxygen ran out. That must have been terrifying. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It especially sucks in that they were both nice people. Like it said in the video, Kent was a diving instructor which is why I was so surprised to find out the lack of caution on his part. I guess we all do crazy, dangerous things when we are young. Our own death is simply an abstract acknowledgement that it is possible, but just....not today! RIP Kent and Mark.
Imagine if you got stuck down there, got lost, and you finally found your way back but then you see these metal gates blocking your way out and you're about to die
There is always a pair of bolt cutters on the other side of the gates in underwater caves for this very reason. If anyone accidentally got locked in, they could just cut the lock.
That sign should if so include a really cheeky yet sinister looking face as a hopefully added trigger bonus. Then maybe people would actually rethink their intentions of entering it. Then again, maybe they won't.. 🤔🙄 🤷♀️
My dad explored all four chambers as an older teenager and young adult , he was a certified e master scuba diver and explored all four chambers, however his stories of Jacobs well intrigued me and scared me ! All his exploring was done in the early to mid 70s .
Reasons I wouldn't even swim on the top: 1. It's a sinkhole, which means it could shift and drag me under with a strong current. I ain't riskin' it. lol 2. There's many dead bodies underneath where I'd be swimming. Hell no.
@@notasian7620 that's like 2 swimming pools. Id need a higher ratio tbh. Also when I googled it, I typed how many corpses are there in an Olympic swimming pool..
Our town is too small and didn’t receive enough recognition to use drones. And the cavern openings are super small. The drones won’t fit, waste of money, and waste of time. It’s a 4 chamber spring underwater cavern. Meaning the first 2 chambers are safe but 80+ feet deep, but the next 2 are dangerous. Tethered lines won’t work since diving’s are extremely rare. 1 diving per year. Which means with the lack of use on the tethering line, then it gets run down quicker. We have fish in the spring that can put chemicals on the rocks to degrade them for homes. But they put that on the tethering line. Meaning that the tethering rope will decay. So those won’t work, no one wants to re wire a tethering line every year just to have to do it again next year. It’s completely safe if you don’t dive. Stop making our peaceful, natural spring, water hole seem like some death hole that swallows you up, and you won’t see the strong, powerful currents that pull you down the caverns til’ chamber 3. Which most free divers won’t get to. If your just jumping off the rocks your perfectly fine. Chill out, and stop listening to the tourists who don’t know anything about what they are talking about… Just saying.. 😬
Are you a diver? My main cave diving buddy has been a caver for 30+ years and started cave diving earlier this year and absolutely loves it. Everything without the proper gear and/or training is notoriously dangerous. I don’t feel scared at all when I cave dive. There is a lot of preparation and attention to detail before each dive. When I go into a cave I’m super excited about the dive and feel zero fear or concern at all.
@@DIVETALK No im just a dry caver. Yeah I'm sure it must be fun once you have the propper training and experience! I've swum in Jacob's Well. Does that make me cool? I was leading a group of hikers out for a weekend excursion from Dallas. I went free diving down to maybe 20 feet in the well. In the process of that trip, I learned a lot about the well. It's actually an artesian well, and before the surrounding settlements began pumping out the ground water, the well reportedly had a fountain gushing several feet above the surface of the river. Now, though, the well is in danger of drying out completely. For the first time in 10k years, the water stopped flowing from Jacob's Well about a decade ago, then again a few years later.

Done a lot of thrill seeking stuff in my life. Skydiving, licensed pilot, hang gliding, SCUBA, spelunking and more. Always stayed (pretty much) within the envelope of known safe operating parameters of whatever activity. Some thrill seekers get bored inside the safe known parameters and seek the thrill of when it was new for them and they keep pushing and pushing. Some don't know when to stop.
That's consistent with my observations. I also like doing fun things like skydiving, whitewater paddling, and SCUBA diving but know my limits. With skydiving, it's just not enough for some daredevils so they try higher risk moves like hook turns and BASE jumping.
Sounds like losers; instead of being a loser thrill seeker, they should be a legit thrill seeker and start doing 'action sports,' such as skateboarding, BMX, dirt biking, wing suiting, jet packs, wake boarding, etc. You can all push the limits on these in terms of pure technical skill and raw edge seeking danger, such as jumping over train tracks whilst dirt biking away from cops chasing you; I'm sure that is a lot more thrill than just "going down to a cave to die." Just doing a cave dive to 'thrill seek' is a loser activity. Hell, fighting in a warzone is better than this
@@Abitibidoug I don't see how cave diving fits into this stuff; BASE jumping and other action activities is legit, but going into a mine shaft to die is just stupid and has no thrill behind it. It is like saying "I like to cut my throat wit ha knife and see how close I get to the jugular; so fun." I guess there is thrill in that, but 99.999% of people would consider you a moron; with extreme cave diving, it seems only 90% of people consider you a moron

By all means go for it. But if the person wants to drag in others then that becomes a problem.

Unrelated, but as a child I once dreamt of myself attempting to swim within a close impact cave, and later found a body at the bottom. I'm not sure if the inside of the Jacob's well resembles the one in my dream, but it still haunts me to this day.
My grandparents said when they were teenagers Jacobs Well was more of a spring that bubbled several feet into the air. My grandmother said they would jump into the spring on purpose so they could be shot out to land back into the pool of water. Granted this was during the early part of the recovery in post WWI. The aquifer feeding Jacobs Well wasn’t tapped so heavily as it is currently due to the light population density at that time. They had photos of them picnicking and generally getting up to mischief. In the background is the spring that would later become just a deep water filled hole called Jacobs Well.

I’ve lived in Wimberley my entire life. And swam at the Well more times than I can count. Yes it’s dangerous, but you make it sound like some death hole. It’s extremely beautiful and the cleanest clearest water in the state. Every diver who’s lost their life in the Well knew the risks. It’s a 4 chamber Well with a very strong current, tight spaces, and a silty bottom. Like most fresh water caverns. I’ve been there several times as divers searched the Well. The first two chambers are safe, very deep (around 80 feet total) but safe. The third and fourth chamber are where accidents happen. They’ve even barred off the third chamber so inexperienced divers can’t just take a dive. This kind of exposure is the problem locals have been facing since media has brought the Well to light. Let’s just keep it 💯.
People like you are hilarious. This is literally you: "You make fire sound like some dangerous thing that can kill people, but plenty of people have put their finger to a lighter without dying; those that have burnt to death knew the risks."
I think the “fear” this video puts out is subjective (1) and (2) it’s simply stating the facts- the cave can be dangerous. Given the number of people who have died by Not heeding the warnings, the video is rightfully pointing out what can happen if you visit or attempt to dive.
There are a lot of sink holes in Florida and they go very deep and connect to underground rivers, I have seen divers never came back up when they went in looking for drowned bodies. I also used catch Albino catfish in the same sink holes

If you're not adventurous and don't know what you're doing, you probably wouldn't even attempt it in the first place, would you?
@Jeffrey Cotton yea, to stop people dying. Wtf. You sound as selfish as those idiots.
Moral of the story: humans weren't meant to dive into deep underwater caves.
they are not, and that is why they have thousands of dollars of equipment on, and various diving certifications
Or else we'd have gills! Plus, just snorkeling in Hawaii around small sharks and aggressive Barracuda's, I was very humbled to be in THEIR domain! And, I thought to myself, "'it would serve your fish eating ass!"

This gives me the creeps seeing other people in it. No way I would dive down that thing!

Rob is the perfect name for some dude doing crazy adrenaline thrill stuff lmao I love it
Sounds like losers; instead of being a loser thrill seeker, they should be a legit thrill seeker and start doing 'action sports,' such as skateboarding, BMX, dirt biking, wing suiting, jet packs, wake boarding, etc. You can all push the limits on these in terms of pure technical skill and raw edge seeking danger, such as jumping over train tracks whilst dirt biking away from cops chasing you; I'm sure that is a lot more thrill than just "going down to a cave to die."
Just doing a cave dive to 'thrill seek' is a loser activity. Hell, fighting in a warzone is better than this
