Ah, the tab between the outlets!!! Our disposal had stopped working and I knew it was the outlet, so, I replace it (without removing the tab) which meant that the disposal just ran regardless of whether the switch was on or off. After watching this, I removed that tab, and viola! it worked as it should. Thanks for the detailed video and for saving me an electrician visit!

Broke the tab and also checked the old outlet which was also broken and boom everything works perfect. Also checked it with a voltage outlet tester. Hi there, All I needed to do was to install a new outlet in my bedroom for split power. You are the only one on TH-cam who showed how to get that dang Copper Tab off. My wire strippers wouldn't reach in there. Only a very long needle nose plyer could fit in between the Copper Screws! Thanks soooooooooooo much!

garbage disposals and dishwashers require 20 amp circuits. Good practice is to keep them on completely separate circuits. Additionally, you used 14-2 wire for the power feed which is 15 amp max. You need to use 12-2 (the yellow wire) for all wire in a 20 amp circuit. Your outlet is also a 15 amp outlet, you should switch to a 20 amp outlet. Code does not require a GFI for these circuits but since you may someday change the faucet and spill water on your head it's a good idea to include GFI either at the outlet or the circuit breaker.

Good video, but I think you were supposed to mark the white wire in the cable going to the switch to clearly designate it as a hot wire. That would have been very helpful in case the outlet needs to be serviced in the future.
I'm the maintenance manager for a 48 units town home called lake side manor and just had this issue I found out they haven't property marked there hot wires and the circuit breaker isn't property marked either so when I shut the power off too the disposal I still ended up getting shocked.
Thanks, this actually solved a wiring mystery in my house. The disposal (turned on and off with a wall switch) quit working, but it would work if I took a three prong extension cord and plugged it directly into another outlet. When I took the switch out of the wall box, I found that the switch seems to be connecting the hot and neutral, rather than interrupting the hot when open (like a light switch is supposed to be). My goal was to open it up and check for 120v with a voltage meter, but the switch doesn't have screw terminals on the side. I put the switch back in the box and buttoned everything back up. I'm going to buy a contactless voltage sniffer to find out if I turned off the right breaker now 😅 And it magically started working again in the meantime...but at least I'm reasonably confident that the previous homeowners didn't cross hot and neutral at this point 😉
You should never switch the neutral, that is against code and if you are using a neutral white wire as hot, you should tape black to both ends so people know it is acting as a hot wire.

would it work if you just connect the neutral wire to top, in parallel with the hot wire for disposal switch? This way, you don't have to break any tabs. Also, I would recommend using a red wire for hot side, not a white wire 😊
I’m in a similar situation, BUT i need your set ( one on a switch for food disposal and one hot all the time for rear speakers) I have a surround sound and my rear speakers sit perfectly behind couch on island. I did all the drilling and come to find out, my speakers only power on when I turn on my food disposal.
Can you answer this please, we can not see due to poor lighting. I could follow up to this point, but you lost me at how you connected the hot wire and pig tail (begginer here!), is there another hot wire?
The outlet under my sink where the garbage disposal and dishwasher washer are connect has one plug showing open hot. I’m guessing that’s wrong. The switch that powers the disposal on and off is under there as well a few feet away. When I connect the disposal on one of the plugs 🔌 it stays on all the time. I’m guessing that’s where the washer is suppose to be connected to. When I connect it to the other plug, it doesn’t power on at all when I flip the switch. This outlet is connected with a GFCI that keeps tripping on a separate wall. Any recommendations on what I can do to fix this? Obviously my electrical knowledge needs to grow. 😃
Does it trip immediately? Based on what you are saying I'm guessing the gfci is interrupting power to your switched circuit. If it keeps tripping first replace the gfci and if it persists look for ground faults. Bare ground wires touching hots, miswired boxes in circuit. Etc.

I always take a black marker and blacken the white wire at both ends to say it is power or a blue color, anything but white! Stops someone from thinking it is a neutral, even heard of black tape on wire!
The word "Jumper" is probably not the best term. Really its just a short wire. Hot from existing dishwasher line into a nut. Out of nut....1. short wire to brass lower plug, thats for the dishwasher, constant hot. 2. second wire out of the nut goes up to the switch. Or put another way, splitting the existing hot to the constant on outlet plug and the switch up on counter.
You are all over the place. I appreciate you trying to explain constant circuit vs. switch circuit, but your explanation becomes very confusing without some wiring diagram to actually explain what you are trying to do.

My garbage disposal calls for a 15 amp, dedicated circuit. However, good practice to have dishwasher in another, separate circuit.

Yes, if the white is hooked to a switch, it is perfectly legal, but you MUST tape black on both ends to indicate the white is hot.

Just use black electrical tape. That is the code-approved method.

I assume you mean there being one neutral on the outlet but there being 2 hot wires? Both hot wires are the same circuit so one neutral is OK.
