Hunt Showdown is an odd duck because it is primarily a PvP game masquerading as a PvPvE game. The AI exists on the map pretty much entirely as sound traps to alert other players. The point of the game is not to loot things or kill AI, it's to kill other players. Once you have hundreds (or thousands like myself) of hours in the game, the bosses and zombies on the map are something you mindlessly kill in seconds and don't really think about, because they aren't the point of the game. Think of the boss as a giant button you push that summons everyone on the map to one compound. Yes, you get a token to extract with and earn money, but the entire game loop and purpose of the thing you just did is for other players to try and stop you. That's why picking up the token gives you the 5 seconds of wallhacks (darksight). The other game mode, Soul Survivor, is even more PvP focused because to even get out of the match alive, you have to be the last one standing. You must kill the wellspring (king of the hill) or your character will simply die at the end of the timer and your time has been wasted. All of these reasons are why it's my favorite extraction game, because it is not focused on looting to fill a stash or fighting AI, it's about shooting cowboys in the head with old guns.
Interesting, never thought of the AIs as sound traps but that does make sense since audio cues are so important in the game. Basically they’re intended to be ignored at all possible means. I agree that the boss is a giant button that summons people to a certain location. It’s a really smart way the devs decided to combine pve and pvp in their game. Out of all the extraction games I’ve played, hunt has been my favorite too.
